Frozen 2

I feel like if they make another one, the original audience will have outgrown it even more.

Assuming there is a 3rd, by the time it comes out some of the original audience will have young kids of their own.:D:

Just saw it, and I thought it was a great sequel. There's a part of me that prefers it over the first just because it felt less like Wicked 2.0, lol. There was some really imaginative stuff in this one that didn't immediately remind me of some other film/story, and it felt like a great expansion upon the world they built in the first. But yeah, the songs aren't as catchy and it didn't have as strong an empowerment theme going as the first, so I put the two films about on par with each other at the end of the day.

My best friend loves Frozen. I mean really loves Frozen. It is one of her two or three favorite things. When I told her as much as I love it, is very much Wicked, I don't think she ever quite believed me. Finally this past year I was able to get her to watch a performance online. Her silent agreement was one of the most satisfying things ever. :hehe:

Really glad Frozen 2 got the FC seal of approval. :D

Over 300m domestically after Wednesday! :chd:
I seem to recall some Disney exec (maybe around the time of Tangled) saying that kids (girls) just aren't into princesses as much anymore and thus Disney would start to move away from that kind of stuff.

clearly that exec had such great foresight. :o

just got back from my 2nd viewing. I liked it even more the 2nd time around! It really doesn't feel like a "Disney princess" movie but rather just a good movie/sequel with characters you've grown to like.

Show Yourself is still the best song/sequence in the film. Also, after this viewing, I realized that the glacier cave is practically only accessible to someone with Elsa's powerset. It really is like her FOS!! :yay:

3rd viewing!! :D

this film gets better each time. This time, I found myself more impressed with the visuals, imagery, and scenery!

imo, it sets a new bar for animation quality.

I've seen it 3 times so far. I wasn't planning to see it for the 3rd time until Xmas day, but last weekend was so dead Cineplex Odeon had a special deal where you could see any show in any format for 50% of the Scene points it would normally take, so I saw it for free using some of my points.
I'll still see it 1 more time on Xmas day since I love a big crowd and there is virtually nothing else open.

Still doing solid boxoffice, up to $345.6m domestic.
Good news from China, F2 has been given an extension and will now run until Jan. 20 there and is already at $106m (first one did $48m total in China)

South Korea still nuts for F2, up to $78.4m and going strong. It's already guaranteed to end up in the top 3 all time for Hollywood movies there (it's already #5), with close to even odds it ends up #1.
Counting local movies F2 should end up either #5 or #6 all time for SK.

Japan still doing what it always does, being the leggiest market. Frozen 2 over $56m as of Tuesday. It may not seem like much, but it will play for months like the original did and is still ahead of Frozen, but estimates of the final gross for F2 still seem to be in the 160-180m range. Well short of the original, but still an absolute monster for Japan.

F2 cruised past $1 Billion WW on the weekend ($1.036B) and still looks to be on pace for $1.4B-$1.5B.
Monday had a solid hold compared to last Monday with $1.51m (last Monday was $1.89m). It may not be as leggy as F1, but the legs are still looking good.

Didn’t get nominated for Best Animated Picture. I’m surprised and yet not based on the drop in quality from the first one.

I'm not surprised, either. It was a beautiful looking movie but there was a huge stretch where nothing really happened except lots of really pretty magic visuals. I wasn't really all that thrilled about Toy Story 4 either. Missing Link will probably win.

What stretch was this?

Personally, I like it a tad bit better as a film then the first. My biggest issue is a bit in the middle of the film that I feel goes by to quickly, without the sisters spending enough time with their mother's people. But outside of that, I think it is rather great. It has a lot to it, and I do think it is telling that it has had some great legs. Sequels don't usually pull that off, but people seem to be really liking this one. Just as much as the first.

I still need to see Missing Link (Laika is my jam), but I also loved Toy Story 4.

Yeah, honestly speaking, Frozen 2 underwhelmed me a great deal. Seemed like there was barely any plot, yet there so many concepts introduced in it that characters didn't have time to breathe.

Heck, Kristoff disappears for like 35 minutes from the movie for no particular reason.

So I'm not bummed that it didn't get an Oscar nomination. I am very glad, however, to see Klaus on there because that is an absolutely beautiful film.

I don't think this deserve to be nominated for best animated film, either. I like certain things about it, but as a whole the movie just didn't gel for me like the first one did. This is one of those sequels, though not bad, I just don't think I'm ever going to feel the need to go back and watch again. Toy Story 4 and How to Train Your Dragon 3 were both much better. Didn't see the other nominees, so can't comment on them.

It was obvious they didn’t have much of an idea for a story, and it felt very much like a direct to video sequel. The visuals were nice. But Kristoff was useless and stuck with a cliche “should I propose” story. I thought the lost soldiers in the woods would have a bigger role but they were useless.

This film actually needed more of an antagonist, and they didn’t have one.

I felt Frozen 2 felt like a DTV sequel in places, plot-wise. Some good songs, top quality animation, good intentioned... but the heart from the first one wasn't there. This movie was made purely for money.

Not surprising the Academy snubbed it.

There's certain tropes and sequels that bother me, and seeing plotlines wear the male romantic lead from the previous movie wants to propose but there are shenanigans in the way I just find so forced, not creative, and flat. It's just a way to force conflict into the relationship and it's just so transparent. I don't like seeing the strings when I watch things, and that takes me out of it.

Still have yet to see Frozen 2, but it's not surprising it didn't get a nomination. Toy Story 4, Missing Link, How to Train Your Dragon 3 and Klaus were all really stinking good and it was just a great year for animated films.

I’ve seen it twice with a big gap of time between viewings and loved it both times. Disney’s direct to video sequels are usually just the same story with a gender switch or a mid-quel that doesn’t completely fit with the original film. This was not either of those things. There’s things in the sequel that actually help fill out the first film like the random ass chant at the beginning or the parents and the storm. Kristoph was sidelined but whatever this ain’t his show this is a tale of two sisters and they are who the audience came for.

There’s not a “Let it Go” but “Into the Unknown” and “Show Yourself” are great songs.

So yeah I’m surprised It didn’t get a nom. especially since I couldn’t even finish Toy Story 4 though it’s animation was beautiful too.

The fact that Show Yourself has been basically ignored by everyone is just shocking to me: that song deserved not just an Oscar nom but a win.

See to me, it is a play on the trope. Especially as the unconventional narrative of Frozen/Frozen 2 does not really make Kristoff the "romantic lead". Technically he is, but the relationship spotlight is always on Anna and Elsa. They are each others "true love". Yes, Kristoff is a bit worried about being good enough for her, but that is the C-plot and that is played for some laughs and a chance for Kristoff to finally get a song (and what a song it is). We know Anna loves him and she'd say yes in a moment, him being Cinderella be damned.

I find the "shenanigans" clever as they are focus on Anna's insecurities of losing her "happily ever after" from the first film. Anna is preoccupied with trying to not lose her sister again, and that is where her full focus goes. At least twice Kristoff tries to propose, and twice Anna is too concerned with Elsa to notice. That to me works really well, because much like the first film, while it is using a trope, it is using it to advance the main narrative of the film, which focus is not the trope, but the inverse of it. Also I think it is crucial that Kristoff isn't jealous. If there is any "conflict" in their relationship, it is that Anna spends the majority of her time having panic attacks over her sister. But that never crosses Kristoff's mind, because this group is all family, and they care for one another completely. Kristoff continues to be the best Disney boyfriend ever, while the tale itself continues to focus on the main point of it all. The sisters.
