House protects public broadcasting

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House on Wednesday evening overwhelmingly rejected President Bush's plan to eliminate the $420 million federal subsidy for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
The 357-72 vote demonstrated the enduring political strength of public broadcasting. The outcome was never in doubt, unlike a fight two years ago when Republicans tried but failed to slash public broadcasting subsidies.
The move to kill subsidies for the CPB, which make up about 15 percent of its budget, was launched by Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colorado.
"Taxpayers are being asked to pay more in taxes because Congress is not willing to make hard choices and balance our spending with our income," Lamborn said.

Congress created the corporation in 1967 to shield public broadcasting from political influence. The CPB distributes federal subsidies to PBS, National Public Radio and hundreds of public radio and television stations.
"It is providing a voice for America, a noncommercial, independent voice that is sadly lacking. It isn't available any place else in the million channels on our cable networks," said Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Oregon.
The vote came as the House for a second day debated a huge spending bill funding job training, education and health programs.
The underlying bill provides about $152 billion next year for programs whose budgets are set at lawmakers' discretion each year.
Among the largest increases is $2.2 billion to finance an increase of $260 in the maximum Pell Grant for college students.

Big Bird and the citizens of the United States thank you, Representative Blumenauer.

I like some of the British comedies they show, and they've made some great documentaries.

I don't mind that.

Besides, isn't public television paid for by donations? Every month or two, they have a fund raising drive where old people answer phones

I watch it for the BBC things and on the weekend, I do watch Arthur and Cyberchase, you wanna fight about it?

Yuck, what a waste of airspace and taxes. You can get all the BBC shows you want if you pay for BBC America.

Yeah um, you can get almost all of those shows on cable now. BBC america for the British shows, Nogin for kiddies and ect.

Besides, Sesame Street and what not are more interested in social engineering these days than teaching kids their letters and numbers.

Well, Sesame Street has always been around criticism.

When it started in the 60's, some people in the south complained because it showed children of different ethnicities mingling peacefully

eh, most kids these days are into Blue's Clues,Wiggles, Dora and that type of crap. Not that I'm knocking it.

I like the cooking shows, the nature specials, and the movies and old tv shows they air every blue moon. The good stuff is usually pretty rare.:(

Several days ago I watched it with my five year old niece, it comes off more as propaganda for kinder gardeners than education. There's not as much education things on it now, but whatever, I'm not the one that's watching it on a daily basis.

If it weren't for PBS I wouldnt've known some of the awesomeness that is in Niagara Falls and about some awesomeness that is in Ireland, and about the awesomeness about the black bears......shall I go on.

...Whew.
I don't think I wanna live in a world where there's no Antiques Roadshow. I'm serious.

Since when was it the government's job to pay for a television channel? I don't trust a government funded channel anyways...

the station I listen to most here is NPR... nuff said

I remember about a year or so ago, i would get off work and tune into PBS to watch the crossroads guitar show. It was a relaxing show to watch while eating a midnite snack. Among many other reasons, i would be sad to see it leave!

No, I don't watch it.

Magic School Bus was awasome though:o
