I am looking to redo my home network....

I am curious, for those of you that are computer saavy, and creative, if you have something unique that I might be able to use for my own home network.

Tell me about it.

Here is an example of mine....

Internal Network this network CAN access external network
My Desktop (has 1TB of data) - Secondary backup point
My Laptop
My Wives laptop
My 1 TB NAS (2 x 500GB drives) - Primary backup point
all on a physical network....

External Network this network cannot access internal network
My father-in-laws laptop via wireless

ISP

I have a simple home network setup, using a basic Linksys router.

Wired:
My Desktop
Family Desktop
Network Printer
X-Box 360

Wireless (secured of course):
My Laptop

I'm tempted to turn the old computer into a network storage drive but I'm not sure how to or if it'd even be worth it to gut all my external HDD's for the endeavor.

I do have a question. I once read an article about how someone split their wireless network in two. One, was their private network they used to access the internet, the second was for their neighbors who mooched their connection. The second network was setup in a way where every web page showed up backwards and upside down.

I'm tempted to try something like this for kicks. You wouldn't happen to have any information on this?

I have heard about that....I would imagine they were running some sort of proxy server thru it....filtering the data coming thru it.

Making a NAS is easy....low end processor and a bunch of drives is nice

Pretty simple home network.

Linksys router
connected Desktop PC and FIOS cable boxes.
wireless - Wii, Xbox360 and 3 laptops

Printer is networked and the Desktop PC is basically a file server.

D-Link router
Home Desktop PC
4 Laptops
1 i-Pod Touch
X-Box 360
1 Printer/Fax

2nd is a Samsung Wireless Router for my Surround Sound system for some wireless speakers.

I have a Netgear router that has my PC and XBOX360 hooked up to it, though I'm shopping for a new one right now. After initially troubleshooting it so that I could actually go online and play on XBOXLive at the same time, it kind of stopped working. I've done everything, called Netgear and nothing has worked. What's a good router that is not going to scare off a networking noob like myself. Pretty much plug and play?

I have two pc's on a Belkin set up. One is wireless through a usb antenna. The connection drops fairly often.

I had tried out a system using my home's own wiring where you basically use outlets to carry the signal to the appropriate rooms. It's useful for people who can't get a wireless signal through walls and such. I was unable to use this system though, I think the wiring in my house is too old.

Networking thru Power...remember...you have to be on the same circuit...that is what most people forget...not an electrician here...but usually there are multiple circuits in a house.

I saw one of them at Circuit City just before they closed and I thought of getting it so my 360 would be wired and not have as much lag playing multiplayer. I didn't even think of the circuit issue.

+1 QFT

You got any intel on my original question?

Most folks don't. I've had a few clients who've used them successfully, they're simpler than setting up a router (which is pathetically easy) and thus serve for a market in that sense.
