Doctor Who

Was definitely my favorite xmas special, however one of the biggest things that moffat does that bugs the heck out of me is he seems to ignore many whoverse rules, some that even he himself has written.

One big thing I noticed in this episode was Gambons character meeting his younger self. That was explained in a much older episode as being a big nono. It was a nice story but that whole time travelling, changing the person through the past was technically a paradox.

he's done stuff like this before. Like int he episode the weeping angels were introduced the chick takes pictures of the angels. yet in season 5 it is said that pictures of angels become angels.

So, they should refer to him as "The Alien Timelord from Gallifrey whose name is never mentioned"?

They could call him The Doctor. I know, I know. It's crazy. But it's just an idea.

No, but it's like calling the main character from CSI, CSI.

It's the name of the show, not the name of the character.

We are really having this conversation? lol

I liked the Christmas special although it wasn't as good as last years. One thing that spoiled it was the CGI shark was obviously so much larger than the rubber one they used in close ups. It was nice to see Amy in her policewoman uniform again (although the 'Policewoman and the Centurion' is a new sex game on me) but couldn't she go the whole Benny Hill, lose the body armour and put on some high heels?
Kinda love Rory as the Centurion though, so cool that he spent all those years watching over his beloved as she was trapped in the Pandorica, becoming a legendary, mythical figure through the ages, like he's the Wandering Jew or something.
All told it was pretty good but I'm much more looking forward to the new series, the Dr in a stetson (for the first time since the First Doctor story The Gunfighters)

Here's the BBC America promo about the Doctor coming stateside...

I love it. It wraps up the whole feel of the show and Amy and The Doctor's relationship all in one.

It's since been taken out, but look at this screencap of a Wikipedia entry that's been floating around. Specifically, look at the last line:

Here's the same one incase the picture was too small on the other one

I guess the doctor is so absent minded he forgot season 1's trip to America in "Dalek"

Ofcourse the 9th doctor's adventures must feel like ages and ages ago. I remember the line in "Utopia"

Martha inquires about the earthquake in Cardiff a couple of years ago, and the Doctor claims he had a bit of trouble with the Slitheen.

He said he was a different man back then and that was ages ago.

Timetravel for the doctor. Forward is backwards and backwards is sideways.

Don't forget the Dalek 2-parter from series 3. Actually, let's forget that episode ever happened and just say that the Doctor has been to 1930's New York before.

This'll be the first time the show was filmed in the US, of course. That's a pretty big deal for some of us. I know I'll be glad to get away from all the minor characters doing crappy fake American accents. Now I know how the Brits felt when we subjected them to Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins.

And the doctor even went to California in 1952. As for the accents thing. JFK could be played by an Englishman for all we know.

If we start acknowledging that movie, then I get to throw around the half-human thing again.

The Doctor Who movie was filmed in Canada around the time Canada became a booming place for movie and FOX ofcourse

Sliders
X-files
M.A.N.T.I.S

And a ton of other things

When Sylvester McCoy was in Vancouver filming the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie he made a video diary collecting his personal thoughts and ruminations about his tenure and the future of Doctor Who. Includes footage from the set and interviews with Paul McGann and Daphne Ashbrook.

I was listening to "Abigale's Song" and I wonder if it has an meaning to the overlaying arc

I hope Katherine Jenkins can make it for the Proms in the summer. I'd love to see this performed

When your alone...Silence is all you'll hear

It was a joke! :argh:

It was a plot element. For some asinine reason, the Time Lords gave the Eye of Harmony to the Doctor instead of keeping it on Gallifrey, and for some other asinine reason it only worked for the Doctor because he was half-human. I'd brush aside the issue if we were only talking about the Doctor telling Grace he was half-human while they danced, but it was also this huge revelation for the Master later in the movie.

The audio's clarified this as the Doctor pulling the wool over the Master's eyes.

How or why I don't know but its good enough for me dang it. :cmad:

I noticed this myself and it was the first thing in her song that stood out to me.

I think it means Amy and Rory will leave The Doctor and THAT'S when the silence will fall.

If that song is foreshadowing, I hope it's left alone and not treated as some sort of vague prophecy. One thing I do not miss from RTD was his ridiculous manner of using clues about future stories. Let the foreshadowing be an easter egg for the audience; don't shove it into the plot as if that was somehow supposed to be significant the whole damn time. I'm looking at you, "The Ood predicted the DoctorDonna!"

My point only: it is beyond dispute that we know who we mean by saying 'Doctor Who' - the fact that the Doctor himself would wonder who you were talking to is beside the point.

It is perfectly correct to the refer to the character as Doctor Who, even though that is NOT his name, nor the name that he, or anyone else, uses. He also doesn't call himself 'television's favourite Time Lord" either but I feel entitled to call him that too.

This is all about defintions. "Doctor Who" IS NOT his name - if, by name, you mean what he calls himself and what others call him. "Doctor Who" IS his name, if by name you mean what people in general call this popular fictional character.

English being lovely, vague and elastic allows both uses of the word 'name'.

See? Sorted. Everybody's right.

Dear God, I must be anxious not to start work this morning.

Moffat's pretty much right. Comparing "Doctor Who" to CSI makes no sense. When you say "Doctor Who", everyone knows its referring to The Doctor, much like how "The Dark Knight" is refers to Batman, though people dont often call him that.

I just call him "The Doctor," but I always make sure to namedrop the title of the show beforehand. I don't want to get him mixed up with my other favorite The Doctor, the Emergency Medical Hologram from Star Trek.

Or The Doctor from The Authority, come to think of it.

^ and thats why referring to him as "Doctor Who" outside of the context of the show isnt a bad thing at all. Its DW fans dont realize how generic a name "The Doctor" is.
