I got into an argument wiht my friend over this he doesn't think society needs heros, I believe they do. Or more importantly hope but what feeds hope better than perfect heros. This stems from a lot of thing such as Lance Armstrong allegdly being an ******* and he took steroids, whether that's true or not, is not important but in the point is more likely than not you'd never hear that in the many times he used to invoke inspiration. There's a love for hagiography in our society at the very least. I was thinking to myself what is so noble about death, what does it matter if someone dies in airplane crash or giving it up for a noble death, except for the pretences humans attach to it since there dead. And through this entire rant the thesis remains, society needs it heros for inspiration... But perhaps we don't, perhaps society would function the same without them, perhaps people would still rise up and do the same amazing things they'd do without ever having there heros... Thoughts? Please...

Yes, I'd say we do need heroes. In an age of cynicism, it's like we don't know who to trust. We don't respect our leaders (for obvious reasons). I mean, look how many looked up to Kennedy. Now look at Bush.

I don't think society needs heroes but it certainly benefits from the notion of them. If there are no heroes/all existing heroes are proven to be false, society will move on.

I say we do. In such a depressing world that we live in right now, we need heroes more than ever right now...

Would it really? If we lived in a world where man didn't do anything amazing, would life be worth living? Does anyone truely believe there life is mundane and meaningless without be depressed? I know it's impossible to live in a world wihtout heros, but that's what a hero is... Your parents could be heros, at least to you.

I think society needs Mods. Yeah. Awesome.

Yes, we need the Justice gang or team or whatever the hell their called. Their be no more wars...:doom: no more. Superheroes would make sure of that. The Flash would go around and deactivate all nukes before anybody would know it.

:o but if I was a superhero...well I'll turn evil. Being a superhero doesn't pay the rent, yo. Especially when you destroy half the city saving it from a big monster.

Opinion would probably be divided. Life wouldn't seem worth living for many and it wouldn't be anywhere near the same experience for most. From a cynical point of view, there will always be people who can make the most of whatever hand they have been dealt whether or not they regard anyone else in the world as a hero for themselves.

Society probably doesnt need heroes, but it would sure be nice if we did.

When I say Heros, I mean people who invoke hope and inspiration, the most obvious being Lance Armstrong.

Well in that case, yes, we need heroes. Now more than ever.

Perhaps you should read something like the newspaper and get your head out of the funny pages, since the paper is chock full of them... People love to read about people being saved from burning buildings and people doing amazing things but coming from no where.

It'd be easier if people had super powers though.

"A hero does what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, regardless of the personal consequences"- Anon.

We need heros for so many reasons...to save us, to inspire us, to teach us, to serve as examples of what we can be...if only for a moment...when we let go of the hate, the greed, the self-centeredness, the anger, all of it that separates us as humans.

To me, heros are not only those who achieve the unimaginable...whos names we know like Lance. They aren't jsut super powered beings doing fantastic acts. They are those who do the everyday things. The father or mother who works extra shifts to help his son or daughter pay for college. The brother who stands up to the bully for his little sis. Or, in my opinion, the shining GOLD standard for heroes...those men and women on 9/11 who ran into those buildings not knowing what the hell was going to happen, or who they could help, only knowing that they had to TRY. THAT is what heroism is to me...and that day showed exactly why this world NEEDS heroes

I'd be afraid of a world with no heroes...but I am comforted in knowing they are out there, and I hope that when/if my moment comes I can prove myself the hero I hope I'd be...:supes:

The world won't get many more heroes.
In my opinion heroes are martyrs.Every great inspiration that someone truly looked up to has either died or suffered a great deal.
With many spoiled kids plauging the epidemic, chances of another great hero arising are dwindling. Most men/women who became inspirations had it hard growing up, giving them a reason to make great change in the world. Seeing life through their eyes gives them the invigoration to do great feats, and they experienced life through another perspective. A perspective they try to force other people to invision. Going through hard struggles make them struggle for a difference.
So in the end, whether or not we need more heroes or inspirations, we probably won't get many.
Because-
A.Most people going through hardships either take the easy way out(AKA the illegal way.)
B.Some are too lazy or scared to speak their mind
or
C. They do nothing about it and live a ordinary or overwelming life.

It's kind of a moot point. As long as trouble and strife exist, there will always be those that need to look to others for help and those willing to give it.

There will always be heroes....like it or not.

I think our heroes should also be our leaders. Not like now, with idiot in office.

****, if the most obvious person to you that invokes hope and inspiration is Lance Armstrong, then you definently need someone to ****ing save you.

IF everyone was good, then why would there be a need for heroes?

heck, if everyone was bad, there wouldn't be a need for them either...

Ideals to live up to, perhaps but heroes, Nah....

We don't need heroes, just better role models. Paul Danan anyone? Seriously? Paul Da-****ing-nan. I swear, if I ever, ever come across this little stain on society on a night out, I was gladly damn my eternal soul by killing him, just so that the world might be spared his gurning and antics in front of the camera. What really galls me is that kids watch this guy and think 'Hey, that's how I should behave!' The guy is a complete and utter maroon.

So like I said, just better role models. Maybe society should start idolising people who actually have brains, morals and good old fashioned leadership qualities, as opposed to the 'celeb du mois' that the mass media foist upon us. (Of course, these better role models would probably become defined as heroes due to their own virtuous and stalwart behaviour.)

I CAN AGREE WITH THIS

Society doesn't need heroes because you yourself can see that you can inspire yourself.
