Happy Accidents (A Random Sunday Posting)
[FONT=verdana, arial, helvetica]Hey there Stooges---

There’s a lot of good stuff to tell you about showing SHOOT-EM-UP to the studio and them loving it… about another project that looks like it will happen… about something I so desperately wanted to do in 2002 but got wronged by a friend, and now the karma turns. Like I say there is a lot of good stuff to tell you.

But let’s talk Transformers shall we? There has been a lot of leaks of photos, scripts, tidbits both true and false. Roberto and Alex spoke on a webcast this week. Lots of things coming out which are costing people their jobs. Good stuff, bad stuff.

But you know what? You haven’t actually SEEN a damn thing yet.

Now the negative ninnies out there, the people like Bowspearer who just live in a cesspool of hatred, will say “We’ve seen enough. This isn’t my Transformers.” To those people who are so old school and stuck in their ways I say the following- Go away. Seriously. We don’t need you here. You hate and you haven’t SEEN a damn thing yet.

Oh sure, Prime doesn’t look EXACTLY like he did in the cartoon. The Autobots are only five. The Decepticons don’t have Soundwave. There are complaints out the wazoo. Well you know what?

I have complaints too. There are things I wanted in this film which are not going to be in there. But I know what some of you know- filmmaking is not a democracy. Hell, Adam Goodman is in charge of production at Dreamworks. He’s the guy who BOUGHT this film. He is working day and night to get this ready for July 07. There are things I know he wishes were in the film. But they aren’t. You’ve talked online here to Brian Goldner. He owns the property but everything is not EXACTLY as he wishes. Tom Desanto is the most devoted producer out there- I know there are things he wishes were in there. You saw that Alex and Bob didn’t get everything they wanted. And Michael Bay, who spends 16 hour days shooting this mega-film? Michael Bay who sets up every shot himself and oversees to the point of operating the camera at times? He’s made a zillion compromises to get a great film he can be happy with.

No, filmmaking is a series of happy accidents. When Tom and I shopped this project around every studio passed, including Dreamworks and Paramount. When those two studios and others came around, we ended up with Dreamworks because Steven Spielberg and Adam Goodman (and creative VPS John Fox and Marc Haimes) knew that this was a BIG cool idea for a franchise. Hell, those guys wanted it in cinemas THIS summer. It’s now 07 because everyone wants to get it right. No one is trying to make anything but a great film here.

When I say you haven’t SEEN anything, think about it. You’ve seen a toy mold. A truck still. A Bumblebee model with a guy underneath it.

You haven’t SEEN Bumblebee transform. You haven’t SEEN Optimus walk or Megatron awaken. You’ve seen sketches, designs and stills. Most of you get it when Brian Goldner says “We are doing something here that has never been done.” He’s right. The technology is there to make a LIVE ACTION Transformers film. To make several of them. But this is not a cartoon. There are cartoons already. Hasbro is making more. This is something new and different. LIVE ACTION robots.

So you negative ninnies- I’d like you to give us a break. And if you don’t, I’d like you to go away for a while. Seriously. Come back in six months. Wait until you SEE something that Michael and ILM and all of us have done. Not some leaked bull**** from some coward. Wait till you SEE the magic that I believe will be Transformers the Live Action Movie. Then if you don’t like what you see, hate away. Till then, I challenge you to be a grown up and reserve judgment. Even the majority who seem to like what you see have a right to hate later on.

We’re trying to do this right- to appeal to the fans and the rest of the world. Cullen is hired. Welker is going through the process. Other things are being reviewed and considered.

There will always be someone who wants to hate. That’s so easy.

But I challenge the haters to wait until they SEE a Transformer in Live Action.

And the rest of you, most of you, thanks for the many suggestions and kind words. It continues to be a surprising and fun ride.

Hang Tight Stooges, Hang Tight.

For the record, he's not pissed. It's just a huge "update" after a huge week.

He sounds a little bit pissed. Then again he always sounds like that.

I'll change the tittle.

BTW Don has very good points there.

he's pissed againt the internet fanboys. Don Murphy is a strange guy, he can have fight with everyone (ask Quentin Trantino) but I think he's not that bad.

There's nothing in that statement that is telling us anything new or substantial. A bad design doesn't magically become a good one when it's moving.

actually, it does help a lot to see something in action. A picture is worth a thousand words, but a live action moving picture is worth a billion.

Given what I've seen on many of the TF boards over the weekend, I think he has a right to be peeved. If you ever wondered why studio executives don't give a crap about the opinions of the fans, well, there ya go.

Sounds like desperate justification for decisions that were made with a business sense rather than a love of material. (I wish Peter Jackson loved Transformers instead of Tolkien...)

:down

well my only real complaint is Starscream's design, but from what i've been hearing about the production...they're keeping very faithful to the SPIRIT of Transformers. different clothes, same personalities.

That would've been intersting and i think a little bit more loyal. At least PJ will be involved in Halo and Neon Genesis Evangelion :) .

PJ might not be involved too much with Neon Genesis Evangelion. other than Weta doing the effects for the film, PJ hasn't been connected with the project. kinda the way PJ didn't have much involvement with Chronicles of Narnia.

Pretty harsh on some parts. "You don't like it, get out!!!" :csad:

From what i read he's still intersted. He just has to finish working on other films to get that moving. He just might end up as a producer if anything.

Oh yeah, I can see how it would come across that way but I think post length played a part.

For clarification...
The ONLY people told to go away were the haters.

Unless YOU are a hater you are more than welcome and your ideas and thoughts, delivered in an intelligent and rational way, will be heard and considered.

Wow I love it when they speak their mind. Murphy's becoming my fav producer.

although, I'm still sad that there's no Soundwave.

I agree with Murphy. Theres alot of "I hate the idea." but not one of them are saying ... I am not seeing it. They hate the idea but will still see the movie. I hate Bay, but I love the TF franchise. I hate the design but they got Cullen. I hate this and that, but I love this and that. If you hate it don't see it.

I like his stance.

Eh let DM say what he wants. He's an ******* anyway. And a so so producer. I mean he still thinks everything he did to LXG was completely right. Admit your mistakes, man.

The only designs I don't like out of the ones I've seen are Bumblebee's and Starscream's. Prime is fine...except the wierd feet. And the paintjob is still meh with me.

That's not strictly true. Infact LXG was the reason he wanted to hear the fan's opinion on Transformers before it was made.

The approach is completely different, as you can probably tell from the last few years.

Wel, I myself am trying to keep an open mind here. I don't know about anyone else, but i do love the new Optims Prime design. It's not exactly like his G1 cartoon counterpart, but he has enough similarities that I can recognize him as Optimus Prime.

dont forget that his movies werent exactly faithful to the sorce material also(Tom Bombadil anyone)

I'm being really optimistic about this film. In fact, i don't think i've ever been more hyped for any film. I like what i see and know about the film (exeption of apescream). I'm fine with the new designs even though they may not resemble G1 much. I like their complexity. I first had a problem with alot of things but now i'm fine with them.

I think seeing the TF taking life will change a lot of peoples opinions.

he does have a point. we do seem to go thru this with every superhero/geek type film where if it isnt an exact representation off the comic page or cartoon then it gets bashed.

He's just said what a lot people need to hear. The problem is though that even now, a lot still won't hear it. They'll read it and ignore it straight of the bat. He's got a lot of right in venting, and he's right. It's not a democracy and there's a lot of comprimises made on many levels. The fact that it looks as good as it does at the moment isn't something we should just take for granted.

On the other hand though. You can never please everyone, especially a fanboy. Some people won't be happy until we see a straight port of Starscream's look from the comics and cartoon to the screen. Sure his updated look is a bit shady, and I'd have loved to have his wings sticking out from his back, but I'd still take this design over the original dorky and clunky toy any day.

After i read the script, i had multiple orgasms. Sure the TF's are not exactly G1 but i don't care anymore. Read the script, picture the visuals and you'll orgasm too!
