In the late 90s, John Woo had his first successful US films hit. First was Broken Arrow then came Face/Off.

Both of these movies are in my list of top faves. Face/Off being a little bit higher because it went back to Woo's Asain roots. The studio actually made this film feel like one of his own, and not just a film with his name slapped on it.

First up:

face_off.jpg

John Travolta teams with Woo again, this time playing FBI agent Sean Archer. Who is obsessed with catching a terrorist mastermind Castor Troy(Nicholas Cage) who, 7 years before had killed his son Mike, in an attempt to kill Archer.

After Troy is defeated and put into a coma. Archer finds out that there is a bomb filled with nerve gas set to go off. They don't know the location, or the date. Archer goes after Troys gang, and his brother. Nobody will give up the info, so with Castor in a coma, he must find a new way to find out where the bomb is. He then goes under a critical surgery which takes Castors face, and is placed on top of Archers body.

The surgery awakens Troy, who then has the doctor do the same procedure to him. Now with Archer as Troy, in jail, going after some info from Castors little brother. Troy is now Archer, and is taking advantage of his new found authoritarian life.

If you haven't see it, it sounds confusing. But it's not. It's pure action delight! This is the action of all action movies. See the above trailer.

Broken Arrow is a military code for the lose of a nuclear weapon. Hence the title.

John Travolta and Christian Slater are two Air Force pilots flying stealth jets over Utah with 2 live nukes as part of a training session.

Travolta plays Deacon and Slater stars as Hail. Deacon, turns on his country and comes up with a plan to steal the nukes. He makes it look like Hail (Slater) is trying to steal them, and crashes the jet in the Utah desert. Now with the help of a National Park ranger, Hail goes off to find the nukes before Deacon can get to them and hold the world hostage.

This one is pretty self explanitory, but very entertaining. Some of the cast will make you scratch your head as to, what was Woo thinking. But it's easily over looked. The movie is full of action, but you can definately tell the studio had it's say in the produciton of the film.

8/10 Check it out, if you haven't seen it already.

Love the hell out of these 2 movies.

I knew you'd like this thread Blas.:cwink:

I was thinking of originally turning it into a John Woo Appreciation thread. But A) Not a lot of people have seen his movies, especially his early work before coming to the US or B) They have really only seen these two movies but didn't care for his films that followed, MI:2, Windtalkers, Paycheck...etc.

Got a favorite scene from each movie??

Face/Off is one of the best action movies ever.
Broken Arrow, I do not like that much.

Face off didn't start off to bad.
I always liked Woos Hard Target.

Everything else he did in America is pretty bad.

Woos other stuff was kinda bad, but I love his work, so I'll sit through it.

I'm kinda meh-ish when it comes to Hard Target, I watch it, but it's in no way his best work.

Fun Fact: Hard Target was suppose to feature the speed boat chase that was in Face/Off. But Woo didn't have the finanices to get it done right, so they used the horse instead.

I have broken arrow. i never seen faceoff. i would liketo see it. i recommed checking out my own worst emeny. it has christian slater. it about two different people he has split personsiltailys . it come on in two week mondays at 10:00pm on nbc

How...have you seen Broken Arrow over Face/Off?? That's just not right man!! Get out there and pick up Face/Off ASAP!! Actually, you can find the 2 disc special edition for 9.00 dollars at Wal-Mart.

Face/Off = best action movie of all time!

Haven't seen all of Broken Arrow, What I have seen, I thought was ok. Face/Off however, I enjoy as a solid action movie.

Face/Off is a good film. Plus how cool is it to see Travolta and Cage in the same film. Both actors perfectly captured eachother's personalities. And the literal face off scene is damn cool.

I really don't like Woo as a director though. It's always bogged down by his same cliched crap he puts in all his films.

Gun to eachother's head moment, two guns while sliding across the floor (or in the air), slow motion, little choir girl music (in instances where it never works)

For example, when the kid is listening to the headphones while choas is erupting around him. People are dying, being shot at, and he's there listening to some children's song. That with the slo mo really annoys the hell out of me.

Just for once, can I see a Woo film without any of that crap?

And his thing for white doves.

I love Face/Off, the rest of his US stuff is crap. Sadly I've not seen any of his proper stuff.

Got that right ;)

Well, I wouldn't be able to mention just one from each (I honestly love both movies), but...

Face/off: The shootout with "Somewhere over the rainbow", the very first action scene, the last action scene with the boats, Travolta as a bad guy, Cage singing the cheesy song at first, the jail fight, hahaa everything.

Broken Arrow: Both Slater vs. Travolta fights (well, last one is more of a shootout/fight), the "I always liked Bruce Lee" line, Samantha Mathis being her usual cute self (and kicking some ass as well), Howie Long and John Travolta's classic "Deak, you da man! I'm da man!", every freaking shootout, especially the one on the cave, ugh...

I need to get them on DVD again (yeah, I don't own them right now :()

While I do enjoy this movie at times, here's a point of interesting fact. The film says that "broken arrow" refers to a nuclear weapon being lost...when in reality, that scenario is called an "empty quiver". In legitimate military code, a "broken arrow" refers to a warhead that's failed to detonate.

Face off is probably the last time Travolta was ever truly cool and badass on film... Same for Cage. I personally think it's one of their most entertaining movies.

these were such good movies. loved them!
