Sci-Fi Dune

"I can envision no more perfect visual representation of my Dune world than John Schoenherr's careful and accurate illustrations." -Frank Herbert.

I will leave the brightly coloured & badly lit stuffs to films like John Carter.

Many shots in the promos are evocative of Schoenherr's illustrations. And desaturated "gouache" palette is rather similar. Doesn't seem to be an accident. Who knows, maybe these old paintings influenced DV long before he started making Hollywood movies.

Arrrgggh it frustrates me to no end how bad the John Carter film was, especially with the budget they had. That first book would have made a great film, provided they had a director who didn’t try and turn it into a slapstick comedy and a lead actor with more charisma than a piece of drywall. The only good thing about it was Lynn Collins, and ironically appearing in stinkers like JC and X-Men Origins Wolverine seems to have killed her career. Meanwhile Taylor “Blank Stares” Kitsch continues to pop up in tons of things, despite also appearing in those same awful movies.

I don’t know if Dune will be good but at least it appears to be taking itself seriously. JC felt like a parody of the story.

I enjoyed John Carter :o

It's a 7/10 movie for me. If we actually saw what happened to John's family as the opener to the film then we could have empathized with him instead of him just coming off as a vague ******* until the reveal that is halfway through the movie, it could go to an 8/10.

That's some really beautiful artwork and I hope the film ends up having a similar style to these images. It's not just the colour saturation, but the colour palette that doesn't appeal to me. We shall see how it ends up looking.

I don't think that Herbert's Dune lend itself to having a nice colour palette. I do not think that Villeneuve is going by his usual photography. I think that he's going to use the kind of palette like The Godfather -though not really dark where half of the face is completely in shadow and the film drenched in Gordon Willis' Rembrandt browns photography. .. lol

Yeah, my good friend said he thinks it will be great because he loves Villenueve but pretty much said that he has no idea what's going on.

That’s because this trailer does a poor job of having a hook to sell the movie to the uninitiated.

Heck I couldn't get into Lynch's "Dune" but the new trailer made it pretty easy to understand for me and the general audience

Paul Atreides is heir to family that already controls a planet. They want to control Arrakis next. The Harkonnen also want Arrakis

Paul and his mother flee and find the Fremen tribe

Paul will return and reclaim the throne.

What strikes me about the trailer is that I don't see many people against Paul. He's got mentors and friends.

Parents

Gurney Halleck and Duncan Idaho.

Chani

Stilgar.

Against Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and Dave Bautista.

This initial trailer makes it seem like a man vs. nature film, with some ghoulish villains thrown in on the side. Which isn't entirely inaccurate as to the overall theme of the book.

I think the trailer did it right by not trying to unload the whole setting on the viewer. It basically focused on the protagonists of the story and the basic premise. Story of a noble family relocating from their home planet to the dune planet and hinting at the dangers ahead. Also about a young heir, who has visions of the future, and the destiny ahead. It's good for the first trailer. Barely any politics and spice, opposing forces, just epic scenery and familiar popular faces (Momoa, Zendaya, Chalamet, Brolin...).

I won't be surprised if future promos will give us better look at Fremen and Harkonnens. As well as a bit more detail on spice.

Wellllll....

He only meets Chani and Stilgar after pretty much his whole House gets taken out

So I finished watching the Children of Dune miniseries. It was good but I think I liked the first one better. I guess I got attached to the Paul character so when they moved away from him in Parts 2 and 3 of the second series, I found it kind of lacking. Didn’t know James McAvoy was in it. He was really good.

I started listening to the Dune audiobook to fill in the gaps that the movie and miniseries glossed over.

YYESSSS to all of the above!!!!

Not sure if you saw my earlier posts, but it seems we are very much on the same page in terms of our interpretations of the cinematography:
Hrmm, I knew the colour palette of the cinematography and production design looks really familiar:

I'm sorry, but your interpretations of the colour palette are entirely baseless. The colour palette in the trailer is not your stereotypical serious-film washed out look or sci-fi. It is a very specific white-gold-black high contrast look with strong chiaroscuro lighting. It is a very specific look that is evocative of the original Dune illustrations and first edition cover artwork. It is also evocative of the Godfather, with its golden sepia-like colour palette and strong chiaroscuro lighting, which is a strong influence on Denis' approach to Paul's arc. It is perfectly suited to the film and is extremely faithful to the source material.

If you don't like the visual style, that is fine. But is not generic and is not some simple paint by numbers adherence to trends. Greig Fraser is a phenomenal DP and his work on Zero Dark Thirty, Rogue One, and the Batman shows that his is a great visual stylist and not some hack who chases trends. The visual style of the film is extremely faithful to the classic, dark, monochromatic Dune artwork, which is the intent.

To be frank, if I didn't know what Dune is about, this trailer would not have told me what it is (in a mainstream way): a feud between two factions over a coveted planet because of its ressource.

Wondering if Feyd Rautha will be in Villeneuve’s adaptation?

Feyd Rautha (Sting) in Dune (1984)

I've seen fan casting choices for feyd in the new Dune and I like a lot of the picks.
Charley Palmer Rothwell (Dunkirk/Legend/iboy)
Alex Hogh Andersen (Vikings)
Cameron Monaghan (Gotham/Shameless)
Eamon Farren (Twin Peaks/The Witcher)

Haven't watched the trailer, but the screenshots for this...my God.

Very excited to see how this turns out.
