Sci-Fi Dune

All his films had relatively modest budgets. Blade Runner 2049 is his first big-budget production. I don't know how much, but I doubt it costs less than 130-150 mil. Blade Runner property isn't really a crowd-pleaser. Nor Dune. Dune is also a complicated political intrigue, which isn't easy to adapt to a film format. But who knows. Villeneuve is really capable.

Gotcha! And I thnik BR2049 is definitely over $100m so its' one of the biggest indepedatly financed movies ever.

Denis Villeneuve said starting early prep on Dune in the coming weeks.

“It’s at ground level right now. It’s a book that I read when I was thirteen years old […] the books were with me since then. I was very excited when I learned that David Lynch was doing an adaptation. I felt his adaptation […] there was some strength to the production design and some directing ideas are fantastic, but it’s not the Dune that I was dreaming myself. It’s a movie about dreams, so I have my own vision about it, but nothing is written yet. It’s really like we are at ground zero right now. We’ll start to work on it in the upcoming weeks and that is going to be, again, one of the biggest adventures of my life as a filmmaker and it’s my oldest dream.”

Yeah that's the same thing I posted. Just not on the other two movies as they're not new info.

The best part of Lynch's Dune was the end credits.

I would argue that Lynch's DUNE had fabulous production design and SFX for it's day, showcased throughout the film. It also has on paper an incredible cast... Lynch unfortunately directed them to give the most bat-guano crazy performances and line readings possible in an already out there story with no connection to actual human emotions and thus no one in the audience can relate or emotionally connect with anything happening onscreen.

Sean Young was so beautiful. It's a shame what happened to her.

Agreed, though I still to this day find what Lynch did with The Baron pretty disturbing, in a good way.

Ugh! That disgusting Baron with all those warts on his face next to his doctor admiring him was pathetic! Hope we never get to see the Baron looking like that, again! And please, no more heart plugs, milking cats and his spitting on Jessica - for crying out loud Lynch, WHY?!

Now has anybody checked out Mark Molnar's Project Dune artwork? Hope Denis Villeneuve has taken notice...

And lastly, while reading through the book this has been my cast that I've envisioned thus far.

Paul Atreides - Tom Holland / David Mazous (find me somebody better if there is anybody more suited)
Duke Leto Atreides - Benicio Del Toro
Thufir Hawat - Jeremy Irons
Dr. Wellington Yueh - Gary Oldman
Gurney Halleck - Graham McTavish
Duncan Idaho - Clive Owen
Lady Jessica Atreides - Catherine Zeta-Jones
Reverend Mother - Helen Mirren
Baron Vladimir Harkonnen - Vincent D'Onofrio
Feyd-Rautha - Jack Gleeson (suggest me otherwise)
Glossu 'Beast' Rabban - No idea
Piter DeVries - Lee Pace
Emperor Padishah Shaddam IV - Edward James Olmos
Princess Irulan - Emma Watson (for the meantime)
Liet Kynes - Liam Neeson / Mads Mikkelsen / Mikael Persbrandt
Stilgar - Alexander Siddig / Shaun Toub
Chani - No idea.

I've been thinking of a fan casting Dune in the Untouchable Classics thread.

I was thinking Viggo as Duke Leto, Ayelet Zurer as Lady Jessica, Ben Mendelsohn as Dr. Yueh and Stellan Skarsgard as Baron Harkonnen.

Ayelet Zuhrer and Ben Mendelsohn both sound like fabulous choices. Now I'm kinda going back on my choice of Liet Kynes by giving Mikael Persbrandt a shot. Seems like he has the right voice for me really. Loved him as Beorn too

What Lynch did with the Baron was awful. He took away any actual menace and nuance from his character, in favor of just making him a gross cartoon character essentially.

You're casting some of these way too old.
Duncan should be in his thirties, you have a 50 year old actor in the role. Honestly this is one role they really next to expand on. If this is going to be a franchise the importance of Idaho later on is extremely important.
Jessica, again in her thirties. The fact she takes spice and is Bene Gesserit you could actually cast her a bit younger if you really wanted.
Paul is probably the trickiest character to cast.

Oscar Isaac would a good Duncan but he's sort of playing Star Wars' version :(

How about Matthias Schoenaerts?

Since Paul is meant to be like 15 or so in the first book, I wonder if they'll cast a somewhat younger actor this time?

Some of it's a little too high-tech for my liking. The cyborg stuff is something that doesn't work. The future of Dune is not as technology focused. The idea is that people have become the thinking computers over machines.

Isaacs would make a great Idaho.

I would lean more towards them casting Paul a little older. He goes from like 15 to 18 and needs to be believable as the Kwisatz Haderach.

Thanks for the tip. In that case, how about Luke Evans for Duncan and I'll be back with Jessica. Also are Feyd and Glossu supposed to be aged around Paul or older - because I'm sorta looking at Will Poulter for Glossu atm?

I'd cast Evans in anything so I'd be happy with that. :woot:
I could go for Amy Adams as Lady Jessica in heartbeat.
Yeah Feyd is around Pauls age, I believe a tiny bit older. Rabban however is The Barons younger brother and I want to say he's in 50's or 60'3. The Baron is actually in his 80's.

Don't be surprised if Denis cast's actors he's worked with. He likes to recycle his cast and crew. Of course there will be some new people.

Benicio is probably the likeliest.
