Sci-Fi Dune

I think Denis is one of the few directors that the studios will allow to make a movie that will be 80% just people speaking great dialogue with knives pressed against their throats. :o

They'll be looking for sandworm toys with jaw gripping action and what not, huh?

What makes you so sure?

Princess Irulan with journal-writing grip!

Short-pack chase figure Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (catamites sold separately).

The Gom Jabbar Test (home version).

Dune is never going to be Star Wars. It's not Star Wars. And it will never be a serious competitor to Star Wars. And I think aiming for that is a mistake.

The Star Wars movies are epic space operas with grand sweeping narratives, but they are also broadly themed adventure serials.

Dune isn't an adventure serial. It's trippy heady science fiction. You can't mold it into something akin to Harry Potter either.

Well, I guess you technically could. However, that won't turn out well either.

Now do I think Villeneuve could do a good job handling a faithful adaptation of the original novel? Yes I can. However, Legendary wants a big action adventure franchise. And I think they are not understanding that Dune really isn't that. It's not really blockbuster material unless you severely dumb it down.

You know I think you're right with this. I think getting the rights is an opportunity by Legendary to just have their own type of Star Wars level franchise to compete with Disney. And they'll try to make it more SW like. With Villueneve directing though it would put me at ease, but if he walks away from directing Dune, his dream project, I'm gonna assume Legendary has different plans for it and it won't be good. Villueneve is the cream of the crop for this kind of movie, so if he says no, that will be telling.

I'd totally buy a God Emperor with Ghola killing tail action figure!

Even though he has a film in Oscar contention and another in production, “Blade Runner: 2049” director Denis Villeneuve looks ready to jump into another classic fixture in the sci-fi world.
Sources tell Variety that Villeneuve is in early talks to direct Legendary’s “Dune” reboot for the company. Legendary has not commented on the news.
Prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, Legendary closed a deal to the rights with the Frank Herbert estate for his iconic novel granting the production entity not only rights to film but also TV-based projects on the sci-fi property.
The projects would be produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers.

Set in the distant future, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.
The novel was also adapted as the 1984 film directed by David Lynch. The film starred Kyle MacLachlan and at the time was thought of as a flop, getting poor reviews and grossing just $30.9 million, but more recently has attained cult status.
It’s unknown if Villeneuve would be involved in any TV related projects, just that he would direct the first film to come out of this new universe.

Dune also has quite a bit of political stuff built into it as well. Which may or may not resonate with a "mainstream" audience.

Arakkis is basically the Middle-East. The Spice is oil.

If Villeneuve signs on, I hope Villeneuve knows what he's getting into. This is a whole different beast than Blade Runner. Legendary is going to want something more commercially viable because they want a franchise. Can he really compromise his artistic vision to make sure that happens?

It's so funny that campaigning or just even little snips of wanting something can lead you to jobs. I'm sure it's not that simple of course, but in my head, it's just dreams that are coming true.

It also helps if you're a world class director saying it. I mean Legendary never took my calls. :cmad:

They could, but they would have to butch the source material in the process. I'm all for an original story at this point since we're not getting God Emperor.

It's one of those complicated situations where:

-To do it right you'd likely need a large budget.

But:

-It also has a lot of elements/subtext that, while it makes for a really good and interesting narrative, don't automatically conform to the kind of safe, easy to make blockbusters that studios prefer these days.

So the question is, would a major studio be willing to throw a lot of money behind this without demanding a lot of changes that would compromise the integrity of the story? I have my doubts about that.

Legendary have distribution deals with WB and Universal. You know WB will throw money at anything. Have done for decades.

Like a needed more reasons to love this guy. :)

Not actually seen one of his movies fir myself yet, but heard nothing but good things, so him directing can only be a good thing

If it's a passion project for Villeneuve, I'd really like to see what he can do.

I will not believe this until it is out. But I would love it very much.

Man, if he keeps this up, they need to officially change his name to Dennis Heronueve. A gift from the heavens such as he should not be called Villen.
