Sci-Fi Dune

I enjoy it. It’s my kind of weird. My only real complaint is the pacing.

It's decent, but much of it doesn't work cause it's too condensed. Especially once Paul joins the Fremen. From then onward, waaaaay too much happens and is skipped over.

Lynch's Dune is far from perfect but I'll give it this: a boring film it is not. I find it fascinating on its own but even more fascinating is the marketing push when it came out where they licensed toys and coloring books aimed at kids because they thought had a Star Wars type of blockbuster on their hands. This was a featurette on the recent Dune 4K release that goes into detail about the merch tie-ins and it's really worth a watch.

As long as we finally get to a God Emperor of Dune movie. That would be something to see on Imax!

Let's take it one movie at a time, but with the right director... I obviously don't mind that they are considering going beyond Messiah without Villeneuve. ;)

That's the key here for me. They'll obviously continue it after Villeneuve after it ended up being so successful, but we've barely heard anything about Messiah, I don't want to think even further ahead so soon. It almost makes the experience less special.

Yeah, let's finish the Villeneuve trilogy first.

In this case, the stories have been written so it doesn’t feel like a big betrayal for them to think beyond Messiah. And just as a fan, I’m excited for some of the later books to finally have a chance at an adaptation.

Oh yeah, that part of it is exciting. I'm still getting used to the idea that Dune is a billion-dollar-plus movie franchise now tbh.

The book adaptation argument is valid, yet as a fan I still like the Nolan approach of talking about one film at a time without thinking beyond that before the next one is released and also let things breathe. And if Villeneuve was doing Children too back to back, I wouldn't really mind, but talking about a sequel that will be done with a completely new creative team, before knowing anything about the third film feels kind of wrong to me.

But it's something completely subjective and personal, I admit I have developed a case of severe marvelitis over the years and I somewhat react to the notion of mass production and content, even in such cases. I realise it's my issue.

I'm more interested in seeing what the next TV show would be about, which I suspect would also be a prequel.

You have to think about it one book at a time though. Children can be a 2 parter. God Emperor is a thick book, and with the changes needed to get it to the big screen, yeah, 2 parts seems reasonable. And if you are looking ahead, you need to probably start talking to your cast. I don't object to recasting, but with the movies as big as they are, you are going to want to keep as many as you can.

Enter the great irony of whose shoulders this franchise would ultimately be carried by...

Villeneuve getting snubbed twice for the Dune movies is a crime against humanity.

And I guess this means Josh Brolin is quitting now. :o
