Some movies just look better on VHS. While DVD has far superior sound and image, some movies just weren't meant for that kind of "upgrade". Exploitations look far superior on VHS as well. The movie seems to keep it's original image and sound with the scratches and pops in the sound and image. And when watching it in surround sound, it feels just like watching it at an old grindhouse theatre.

There actually are DVDs out there (From flea-market companies like Diamond,Brentwood,Substance, and a few others) where the transfer IS taken from a VHS source. So I guess that means you can have the best of both worlds.

Anyone else still watch movies on VHS?

I have one VHS movie (a gift) and it's Die Hard: Die Harder (aka Die Hard 2)

Last VHS movie I saw was Lost in Space...and only saw part of it.

Pretty sure there was already a topic on this.

VHS? GOD no. Why would I want to step down to a version with much lower video and sound quality -- and most likely its fullscreen -- when I can get it for just as cheap on DVD? Not to mention the fact that I never have to rewind, can skip to a sequence or repeat it, can access extra material, and NOT worry about having to replace it when it breaks after repeated viewings.

And as far as exploitations, you're still getting all of the above if viewed on DVD, even if the source is lower quality.

Dude, DVD players are really cheap these days. I'm sure you could afford one.

Who in the hell would choose VHS over DVD?

EDIT: oops wrong placing lol.

I have three dvd players, One VCR and a Projector for 35mm films :cwink:

It's not an upgrade. Movies are (usually) made for the cinema, so DVD is a lot closer to what they are supposed to look and sound like than VHS is. VHS is a huge downgrade in quality. Plus, VHS is usually fullscreen.

"Fullscreen" is a misnomer since it's actually cut off. In the case of next-gen formats like Blu-Ray, they're not even using that term since none of the movies are availible in 4:3.

Ha, no.

VHS is NOT to DVD what Vinyl is to CD. DVD>VHS, completely.

Some films simply don't turn up on DVD anywhere, thus requiring people to stick with their VHS copies of it.

Leonard Part 6.

VHS is inferior to DVD on every level, except for the fact that (like Dr. Fate said) some films just don't get made on DVD format, albeit the more obscure films.

And they haven't made a movie about a killer DVD... yet.

Yeah, like Howard the Duck :o

still have the tape of it :woot:

i never watch VHS anymore. the last movie i saw on VHS was Mortal Kombat about 5 months ago.

that being said...there's nothing you can put on a VHS (sound and image wise) that can't be done on DVD.

the only thing i liked about vhs was it was harder to ruin a video tape.
dvds are easy to scratch and ruin.

In the past 2 years, the only thing I've used VHS tapes for is to record TV shows off of television.

Last year I got a DVD recorder, so.........no VHS tapes for me.

Leonard Part 6.
Or by it's other title......"Coke Owns You"
Yeah, like Howard the Duck :o

Was able to record Howard to DVD from Starz channel.....hopefully one day it'll get real DVD release.

I have many things on tape not yet on DVD....so I watch them while I burn them to disc.

the best part of VHS is that you can fast forward through the FBI warning and get right to the movie

True. Some DVD are really annoying with those warnings that you just can't elude... The Seinfeld Season 8 Region 4 has an anti piracy clip that it's just horrible to watch, and it plays everytime you put the DVD, right before the first episode of each disc :csad:

That's cool.

I only tape something from TV time to time. But I really don't watch videos anymore so often. Like once a year. I still have all my videos. I'm a film buff, I won't never get rid of them.

u know whats funny?

i have fellowship of the ring on vhs and two towers, return of the king on dvd
