DYNAMO 5 #9: Enjoying the new price and once again enjoyed another installment of Faerber/Asrar/Rily's newest superhero franchise. It seems obvious that this is seen as a little "sister book" to Faerber's other Image superhero comic, NOBLE CAUSES, as the Nobles are mentioned by the villains of the issue. But in a way, many of Image's characters have sprouted from NC; even Invincible had his first technical appearance there. NOBLE CAUSES has been recommended to me, I just would be more willing to bite if some of those 7-8 trades started getting into HC's. Anyway, DYNAMO 5 operates free of that and I haven't felt lost at all; so long as you've been reading since issue #1, you'll be golden.
With Visionary stuck having to explain his status as a superhero with his mother and Myriad still covering for the unconscious Gage at his high school (and likely dazzling everyone with his womanizing ways, especially as by some of his pal's reactions that Gage wasn't known for being attracted to black girls), Maddie is again forced to organize Slingshot and Scrap to investigate another rogue; this time it is Brains and Brawn, a psychic/tanker duo. It seems that Gage has awakened, only for it to be revealed that he is some sort of "psyche ghost" who can't interact with anyone else...except for Brains, who he happens to stumble into when he psychically seems to wind up back at school, where Myriad is impersonating him. This sets up the climax of the issue, where the pair engage in a psychic duel and Scatterbrain seems to overwhelm her rather quickly. Scatterbrain & Scrap have less luck against Brawn, who TKO's Scrap with a single blow! The duo manage to escape, and the last page reveals them forming a quartet with Voltage and Bonechill, which is pretty cool because "evil teams" always manage to test the mettle of any super-team. The discussion with Visionary and his mom, covering such awkward subjects as his "one night stand" deadbeat father and how Maddie went for the "all or nothing" radiation bath to empower the kids is also pretty good, with Mrs. Chang demanding a meeting with Maddie, no doubt, to see if her son should still be "playing" with the other step-kids. Naturally, Scrap & Slingshot are glad to see that Gage has recovered, but he has a surprise for Myriad. Naturally, this is more of the usual entertainment from this series. The heroic little step-family is an interesting set-up, especially as they all have families and lives of their own which may not match up. And while some of the villains may seem "generic", Asrar manages to give them solid designs so that it doesn't much matter. I especially like Bonechill. I just wonder when the ex-Capt. Dynamo side-kick, Quake, will be seen again. With the kids' enemies starting to unite (and before issue #12 at that), they may need all the help they can get.
Much like INVINCIBLE, this series serves as a fun reminder to many older school fans of why they liked superhero comics in the first place, now that both Big Two companies seem to thrive on shock value and endless events. It isn't as good as INVINCIBLE, but...even INVINCIBLE wasn't as good by issue #9 as it would be later, so I see a lot of potential in DYNAMO 5. The trade of the first 7 issues is out and dirt cheap ($9.99), so go grab it if you haven't!

Still is damn depressing that since September, no one seems to want to talk about this book. :(

DYNAMO 5 #10: Not just for superhero fans bemoaning "new grim stuff", DYNAMO 5 is quickly proving itself a capable and well written team book in it's own right. Granted, coming from the guy best known for NOBLE CAUSES, it isn't unusual. The series can whip together character interaction just as well as it does action sequences, which Faerber & Asrar pack into every issue, yet don't seem to believe it is "pandering to mental midgets" (as Bendis once alluded, in terms of that practice) at all. The book looks simple, but the twists and quirks on some of the expectations carry it through very well. A bit actually happens in this issue, carrying over from the last few. After awakening from his psychic coma (and telepathically beat down the villainess Brains),
Gage angrilly confronts Spencer, who was ordered to pose as Gage in Texas to keep his family placated while Gage recovered. Visionary had to reveal his status as a superhero to his mother, who believes Maddie is manipulating and endangering both her son and the other kids, and confronts her about it. Scrap forces Gage & Spencer to talk things out rather than fight, while she, Visionary, and Slingshot take down a rampaging robot, which was a set-up from their new league of enemies, which include Bonechill, Voltage, Brains & Brawn, and someone from Slingshot's father's past. Asrar, who'll be working on the NOVA ANNUAL soon, naturally provides his usual great action, with Riley solid on colors, but it is the two major talking conflicts that are among the highlights of the issue. Forced into talking, they each discover that they both have misconceptions and prejudices about the other due to their past experiences. The scene is handled very well. Maddie & Mrs. Chang have a discussion in the office and Maddie turns things around into wondering if Chang is genuinely concerned about her son and the others, or is venting because she was essentially abandoned by Visionary's father, whose genes he now is using as a superhero. Visionary also gets a good power moment, but as the robot was essentially designed to lose anyway, it is a bit moot.
Naturally, as the big is nearing it's one year anniversary, it has quickly become one of the better team books out there and a joy to read every month. Always worth hunting for.

Obviously, I am the only one reading this who wants to comment. :(

I just can't get the comic as much anymore. Make no mistake, I like it, I just haven't read anything since the big reveal that Cap. Dynamo was still alive.

There it is. Mocking you. You know you wanna look. :p

[blackout]That wasn't really him.[/blackout]

[blackout]A daughter he had with his arch enemy.[/blackout]

:wow:

[blackout] Well it fits with the series, how does she gel with the other kids? [/blackout]

Her name is Synergy, but she was essentially "mind-wiped" by Gage/Scatterbrain to negate all the years of being raised by Capt. Dynamo's arch-enemy (and another lover). She hasn't shown up since, but the mystery of Capt. Dynamo continues...

Finally got the issue today. Good stuff, but whats really got me blown is what happened to the Knobles. Where the hell is Geia? What happened to Race? Why's Rusty so mechanical all of a sudden. Whose this new b***h?!?! I mean damn, I only missed like three story arcs. A lot can happen in a short time I guess.

NOBLE CAUSES was recommended to me a while ago, and being faced with the option of 7-8 colored trades or two B&W "archives", I may go for the former. Shame they didn't get the HC treatment like INVINCIBLE.

The art in Noble Causes is pretty bad.I love a variety of artists with very different styles, but reading through some of the first trades was just a chore.I think I'm just going to stick with Dynamo 5.

I thought the first trade was a great read, even if you hated this thing,7 issues for 10 bucks is a rare steal to come by these days.

The premise of all of them being illegitimate children of a Superman/Manhunter hybrid is something new and could lead to alot of good stories.

My only complaint here would be the "teeny" moments. Some of these people are already in college, yet some of the convos here say otherwise. The dialog flowed well, but even in Young Avengers,Heinberg managed to avoid the typical slang and banter one would expect.

How have the last 3 issues been?My shop has been having difficulty ordering these for me on time.

The last 3 issues have built well from where the trade finishes off. The villains are mobilizing and things with the team start to become complicated.

Yeah, my LCS sometimes has issues ordering it. Sometimes it ships a week after Diamond says it does. You may have to buy online.

Starting with issue #32, which was previewed in Dynamo 5 #10, Noble Causes jumps ahead five years. So the family looks so different because a lot of time has passed. This was done to give the book a "clean slate," so to speak, so new fans (like those reading D5) would have a reason to get on-board NC without having to know all the backstory.

Welcome to the Hype, Mr. Faerber. I'm really getting a kick out of D5 so far.

Ah, I see. Well, if I decide to drop Mighty Avengers, I may add this in it's place. Oh, and welcome to the Hype. Dynamo 5 is teh awesome.

I second that suggestion, Jay. Think of it as a way of returning the favor for all those INVINCIBLE suggestions, Anubis. ;)

If I had to choose between MA or D5, D5 wins by about a 100 miles.

We were talking about the new Noble Causes silly billy. I'm already getting D5.

Right.

I may get that eventually, too. I may go with the trades because I like color.

Jay Faerber: Encouraging people to drop other people's books in favor of his own since 2008.

Just kidding, Jay. Welcome to the Hype, and keep up the great work you're doing on Dynamo 5. It's one that I look forward to each month.

Jay, I know that Asrar is going to be working on some Marvel stuff (or he already did), and I was wondering how that might affect his D5 work. Will he be staying on the book?

Mahmud's already finished up his Marvel gig. It was just 11 pages for the Nova Annual. He's already back to work on D5.

Good to hear. Some of us feared a delay.
