Just a quick hypothetical(?) question that I wondered about earlier and wondered whether any sciency people here may have an answer for me.

If the Earth were to slow it's rotation to the point that it stopped, firstly how slow would that hypothetically have to be in order for nobody to die, and how long would it take, and secondly, what would the result be if, after stopping, it started to spin the other way - to eventually match it's current speed of rotation, just going the opposite way around.

I think the issue is, if the Earth did stop spinning. It wouldn’t matter how slowly it happened. The resulting changes in climate and weather would kill us all in fairly short order...

Reversing the rotation would result in Climate catastrophe. But as Earth is actually quite capable of adapting / adjusting to new changes, eventually, after few hundred yaers things will settle down a bit, but before that I can see mass extinctions happening.

BTW, Venus rotates in opposite direction.

Apparently, the Earth’s speed of rotation (at the equator) is about 1000mph. So if the rotation suddenly stopped, it would be bad. :wow:

The Earth’s spin is slowing. But it’ll take something like 200 million years for a 24 hr day to become a 25 hr day. So… no immediate worries.

And contrary to Superman, a backwards spinning Earth wouldn’t reverse time. :ninja:

If you're being sarcastic, you may stay. If you're being genuine and are naive and gullible, that's fine, but please go and be naive and gullible elsewhere.

the link I posted said Flat Earth conspiracy.... you tell me if you think I’m being serious

We wouldn't have to worry about it. For this to occur the amount of energy required to make it happen would be ridiculous. We're talking something like Earth colliding with Mars. Needless to say, we'd be killed instantly long before we had to worry about the climate.

"yes, NASA? I've got a question..."

I don't think this could be possible for the simple reason that Earth rotates because of the pull of the gravity of the sun. So in order to make Earth stop, we should turn the Sun off :P

I watch a Youtube channel that actually addressed this once. I can't find the link off hand but the results would be catastrophic. I'll see if I can find the link. It was rather interesting but not a heavy handed science thing.

Among other things the magnetic field probably would disappear since it's generated by Earth's spinning. And so we wouldn't be protected from cosmic rays.
