Listening to it now. It really isn't impressing me all that much. Just the same old shtick. There is not denying he has made two Iconic albums, but I really think he needs to stop.

What do you all think? Discuss...

His new single is.. Strange to say the least...

the new single i don't really like. the girl singing the hook has a unique voice

but the stuff on the album is a lot better than his more recent stuff for sure

Deeper into his album. It just seems all he has left is to try to insult pop culture & "act" crazy. Sad to say but it seems all his talent left when life stopped sh**ing on him.

Sometimes that happens. It sucks, but ces la vie.

I like the album. It's better than his last CD content wise and his flow is on point. Nothing can compare to his first 3 albums though. Although he does have the usual celebrity bashing most of the album is about his addiction to pills. The songs are sharp and when listened to in sequence tells a great, yet disturbing story. I guess you can say that it is the "same old shtick" but you can say that about most artists content in the music industry, whether it is rap, rock, country, or whatever. Relapse sold 6,000 units at Best Buy by 10am and is predicted to sell 133,000 units before the days end. Eminem isn't going anywhere. I'm curious to know what you expected from this album?

Now, I'll admit that his albums sold well and were popular. But iconic? No way, Jose. Sorry.

Well, they made him an icon....alot of things are iconic that I don't care for...it doesn't make them less influential.

I don't really know what I expected. I guess the one thing that dissappoints is that in his 1st three albums. Every song stood on its own beat wise. In his last 2 albums he seems his songs seem to blend together.

Well put sir. I think some people cant differintiate between that. For example I am not at a Kiss fan, but I can't deny the huge influence they had on bands that I do like.

Whether or not I care for them is not at issue here. I just do not think that they were iconic. Is it a sin?

I see what you're saying. I think the blending of songs on Relapse actually help tell the story I feel Em is trying to get across, although some of the songs don't work as well without listening to the previous track.

You can think whatever you would like puddin. What is it about the first two albums that makes you think the albums weren't iconic? What albums do you feel are iconic?

"Puddin"? My goodness, aren't we condescending towards those who have different opinions.
I think that the crazy **** that you guys are talking about is basically all he's ever done in his albums. Its just gotten old now. They are pieces of pop culture, yes, but I would not call them iconic. What would I call iconic? Probably "Thriller" and other such albums. They influenced so many others.

I'm not trying to be condescending. It was meant as a term of endearment...no harm done. If that's your opinion that's fine. I think you will find that Eminem has influenced many and opened many doors in Hip Hop. The whole "that's all he has ever done" is an argument I have never understood. There are artists that, like Eminem, only deal with certain subjects and have certain styles. Most rappers talk about the same things...the same goes for R&B and Rock artists.

....and Thriller was the ****.

I'm not sure what you've listened to, because the majority of his album is most definitely not about pop stars. There's about 2 songs dedicated solely to that, and a few other name-drops sprinkled around the rest of the album. No more than his previous efforts.

No, just wrong. To deny the sheer impact Em has made (even with just those 2 albums) is complete denial of pop culture. He opened the floodgates for the hip hop listening community, and dare I say it, pushed the genre back to mainstream eyes. IIRC, MMLP is the fastest selling rap album ever pushing just shy of 2x Platinum only in it's first week. Tall order for any artist, let alone rap.

I read Rollingstone's review of it. They gave it a solid 4/5 stars, but it read like the songs about his personal struggles and coming to grips with his life are good while there is too much filler shtick with him singing about killing, raping and insulting celebrities. May have to borrow it from a friend before making a purchase.

I may give it a listen...eventually. I honestly don't think his music will fly with most people nowaday unless you're just a big fan of his. Much like Blink-182, his music was GREAT when I was 14-15 years old, but when I listen to him now (in my 20's) and see him on the comeback trail, well, I just have very little interest. If any.

I like it. I do wish he'd stick to more serious subject matter, but I don't mind the murdering psychopath stuff either.

Favorite tracks-
My Mom
Same Song & Dance
Stay Wide Awake
Deja Vu
Beautiful
Underground
Careful What You Wish For (From the deluxe version)

I think Deja Vu is the standout track for me. It reminds me of his Infinite days.

I think he still has the potential to make a really great album, he just still feels like he needs the shock value and zaney-ness in order to reach his fans. He needs to realize that both he and his fans are older. I am looking forward to Relapse 2.

And damnit, I want a new track from Em and Royce.

i think it's a step up from Encore. He had gotten lazy around then. Marshall Matthews LP is still to date his best album. Eminem Show is 2nd to me, slim shady, then relapse, then encore.

And eminem is very iconic as he is standing the test of time. Just because Thriller has been around longer doesn't mean Eminem is not iconic. He's ground breaking. "Kim" is one of the most innovative and original songs of all time. Just because those songs can't be played on Top 40 doesn't deminish them at all.

Not only is he original and innovative to our generation, he's a genius. He's a controversy artist and capable of rapping in ways that no one ever thought a white person could. But he didn't stop there. He blew the roof off the idea that a white person could rap. While he does his slim shady persona to get on Top 40 and sell records and make money, there are songs on his album that are very poetic and deep. One song doesn't tarnish the other.

The man is iconic and Slim Shady LP and Marshall Mathers LP are both iconic albums. Past that.....not so much. But still, you can't argue that he has his place firmly set in music history.

PS: Hopefully Relapse pt. 2 will have more songs like Underground - easily the best song on the album and a throwback to his earlier days. Loved it.

this.

i think the accent and all the tracks that most fans were displeased about like Evil Deeds, Yellow Brick Road, and of course Ass Like That he used that same formula with the accent and everything but listened to most fans and polished it very well and went back his Slim Shady roots and the crazy crap he was known for back in the day. I also think what really helped him regain his momentum was letting Dre take over the boards and produce all of the album except for Beautiful which IMO should have been the first single.

I think Hello should have been the first single, followed by Beautiful, and then 3 AM if he really needed to release 3 songs.
