Emma Stone, Jonah Hill Team Up for 'Maniac'

Emma Stone and Jonah Hill are in talks to star in a TV series being directed by Cary Fukunaga, Variety has confirmed.

The half-hour dark comedy, titled “Maniac,” hails from Paramount TV and Anonymous Content. The search for a writer is underway.

While a network is not attached, the project is eyeing premium platform. Sources tell Variety “Maniac” will be shopped to cable and streaming networks, with creatives looking for a straight-to-series order. The project may be seeking a two-season order upfront, according to Deadline, which first reported the news.

It’s no doubt Netflix will consider the project, given Fukunaga’s close ties with Netflix, coming off of his award-recognized film “Beasts of No Nation,” which marked the first feature film for the streaming giant. Fukunaga is also in business with HBO, as director and exec producer on the premium cabler’s “True Detective.”

“Maniac” is about a guy who lives a fantasy life in his dreams, but in reality, is locked up at an institution. Both Hill and Stone will play patients in the institution.

Leftovers Screen Writer Patrick Somerville to Write "Maniac"

Leftovers writer-producer Patrick Somerville has been tapped to write Maniac, the high-profile upcoming Netflix half-hour series starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill and directed by Cary Fukunaga. The project, based on the the 2014 Norwegian series, hails from Paramount TV and Anonymous Content and has a 10-episode straight-to-series order.

The premise of Maniac revolves around the fantasy world of Hill’s character, who in his real life is confined to a mental institution. Stone plays a fellow patient. The duo and Fukunaga executive produce along with Michael Sugar and Doug Wald of Anonymous Content, Kruke Kristiansen & Anne Kolbjornsen and Espen PA Lervaag & Kjetil Indegard. Ashley Zalta will co-executive produce.

Somerville is coming off a stint as a writer/producer on the HBO drama The Leftovers. He previously has written for the FX series The Bridge, and Fox’s 24: Live Another Day. Somerville also has written two collections of stories – Trouble (2006) and The Universe in Miniature in Miniature (2010) – and two novels, The Cradle (2009) and This Bright River (2012). Somerville is repped by WME and Principato-Young.

Maniac, Netflix’s high-profile series starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, is heading into production. Filming of the Paramount TV/Anonymous Content show is set to begin on August 15 in New York City, with principal photography expected to wrap just before Thanksgiving.

Cary Fukunaga is set to direct the entire 10-episode straight-to-series dark comedy based on the 2014 Norwegian series, which sold to Netflix just days after it was taken out last March.


A lot has happened since then, with Stone emerging as the hottest actress this awards season with her starring role in Oscar frontrunner La La Land.
I hear Stone and Hill met last week to discuss the series when they were in Los Angeles for the SAG Awards where Stone won for La La Land.
The premise of Maniac, adapted for the US by Patrick Somerville, revolves around the fantasy worlds of Hill and Stone’s characters, who in his real life are confined to a mental institution.
