Ethan Hawke has signed on to topline Lionsgate's futuristic vampire film Daybreakers, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Australian horror veterans Peter and Michael Spierig (Undead) wrote and will direct the high-concept project, which begins shooting in July in Australia, with Weta Workshop creating the creature effects.

Hawke will play a researcher in the year 2017, when a plague has transformed most of the world's population into vampires. As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human or find a blood substitute before time runs out. However, a covert group of vampires makes a discovery that has the power to save the human race.

Lionsgate will release the film in the U.S. and the U.K. and is handling international sales at the upcoming Festival de Cannes.

Good to see Hawke in another leading role,i liked him in Assault on Precinct 13 and this sounds promising:up:

Sam Neill has joined Ethan Hawke in Lionsgate's futuristic vampire film Daybreakers, reports Screen Daily.

Australian horror veterans Peter and Michael Spierig (Undead) wrote and will direct, with Weta Workshop creating the creature effects.

Hawke will play a researcher in the year 2017, when a plague has transformed most of the world's population into vampires. However, a covert group of vampires makes a discovery that has the power to save the human race.

Filming will start in Australia this July.

Ethan Hawke's made the transition from doing small, art-house films to mainstream, Hollywood type stuff pretty well.

Still, he'll always be the poster boy for Generation X.

Ethan is great and all, but Dafoe and Neill in the same movie? That is simply awesome. Plus, it is a pretty unique concept for a vampire movie which we haven't seen in a long time.

Althought this looks cool and with a good cast, I hate when Hollywood bunches of certain types of films all at once. This, 30 Days of Night and I Am Legend(the mutants are basically like Vampires).

Don't they realize that if they don't space out 3 vampire films the general audience like always is going to get sick of them quickly.

Wow, this could have easily turned out cheesy-looking, but the visuals, cast, and story all look very intriguing.

And I LOVE the twist on the futuristic tale. Vampires being added to the mix, as the general population, no less, is a breath of fresh air. I can only hope that the filmmakers take advantage of a rich story like that. Really go deep into the nature of a vampire, in which their very existence lies on the harvesting of a related species. So many parallels and social commentaries could be made.

I really, really, can't wait to see what they do with this! :D

I had not heard of this before today and just saw the trailer.

Before watching the trailer I first saw the word Vampire in the quick description and rolled my eyes (it just seems vampires are everywhere). But then watching the trailer I found that the movie looks very unique and really really good.

Looking forward to this one!

This is like the I Am Legend book mixed with the original plot to Blade 3. They probably just used Blade 3's original idea just like how Minority Report's story was suppose to be the sequel to Total Recall.

When I first heard about this film I completely dismissed it, but after seeing the trailer I'm really intrigued. Some of the shots are beautiful and the story is compelling. Looking forward to this.

So are these Vampires gonna be more on the supernatural side or more on the biological side?

Looks to be the latter and I hope I'm not wrong. Though there was that one shot of a classical vampiric creature in the lab. But that could be just an exception.

I think the trailer looks pretty tight. At least the Vamps in this have some teeth to them apparently.

The trailer really had me intrigued. Then Willem Dafoe showed up. Oh yes, I'm sold.

Vamps have been getting some justice lately, between this and Let The Right One In.

I'm surprise this thread isn't receiving more comments. We were all complaining about how we wanted vampires dark and vicious again. And now we're getting another vampire movie that's like that.

I had no interest in this but I stumbled across the trailer on another site and WOW. The visuals and action look great and it also has a very intriguing storyline to go with it. Count me in for this one.
BTW, Sam Neill kicks ass.
