ABC Orders Musical Comedy Pilot From Dan Fogelman, Alan Menken & Glenn Slater
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

You can’t say ABC is not taking big swings. The network has given an off-cycle pilot order to Galavant, a single-camera comedy fairytale written by The Neighbors creator Dan Fogelman, with Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken attached to write the music and his frequent collaborator Glenn Slater expected to pen the lyrics. Produced by ABC Studios, Galavant centers on handsome Prince Galavant and his quest for revenge over the King who stole his one true love. The project stems from Fogelman’s collaboration with Menken and Slater on the Sing Like A Larry Bird musical episode of The Neighbors last season, which earned the series an outstanding music and lyrics Emmy nomination. It expands ABC’s fairytale primetime footprint established with drama Once Upon A Time and its upcoming Wonderland spinoff. Fogelman knows a thing or two about writing fairytale musicals — he co-wrote Disney’s Tangled, whose music and lyrics were penned by Menken and Slater. With Galavant, ABC is renewing its efforts to launch a music-themed series. During the 2010-11 season, at the height of Glee‘s success, the network developed three such projects, a comedy from Menken, top lyricist David Zippel and comedy veteran Marco Pennette, a drama with musical elements from writer Bob Kushell starring Tony winner Idina Menzel, and a musical comedy from Sharpay Fabulous writer Robert Horn. Galavant is the first project to come out of the overall deal Fogelman inked with ABC Studios over the summer, which also include his showrunner services on The Neighbors, now in its second season. He has brought on former Industry Entertainment manager, Jess Rosenthal, to run the new company, Rhode Island Ave. Prods. Fogelman’s other feature credits include Cars and Crazy Stupid Love.
This sounds like it could easily go wrong, but I would actually love to see it go right. The Neighbors always looks stupid when I see promos for it, but these three guys worked on Tangled together, that was a good one, right? Plus Menken was there for the Disney Renaissance. I'm guessing this might take some cues from stuff like The Princess Bride and Into the Woods, too.

Vinnie Jones is the first actor cast in ABC’s single-camera pilot Galavant, a comedy fairytale written by The Neighbors creator Dan Fogelman, with Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken attached to write the music. Produced by ABC Studios, Galavant centers on handsome Prince Galavant and his quest for revenge over the king who stole his one true love. Jones, repped by Innovative Artists, Elevate and Stone, Meyer, will play Gareth, King Galahad’s badass, scary Scottish henchman. He is onscreen in Escape Plan.

‘Galavant’ Pilot Casts Lead, 3 Other Roles
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: Joshua Sasse (Rogue) has landed the lead in ABC’s single-camera pilot Galavant, a comedy fairytale written by Dan Fogelman, with Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken writing the music. Also cast in the project, produced by ABC Studios, are Karen David (BBC’s Waterloo Road), Mallory Jansen and Luke Youngblood (NBC’s Community). Galavant centers on handsome Prince Galavant (Sasse) — a classic once-upon-a-time hero, complete with sword, horse, great hair, courage, mad skills (like dragon-slaying and helping the poor) — and his quest for revenge over the evil King Richard who stole his one true love, the beautiful Madalena (Janesen). To Galavant’s shock, Madalena decided she prefers the King and his wealth and power to the love of penniless Galavant. David, repped by Abrams Artists, Optimism Entertainment and Mark Temple, plays the female lead, Isabella, a princess and the daughter of the King and Queen of Valencia, whose country has been conquered by King Richard, and she seeks out Galavant. Youngblood, repped by Talent Works, Marshak/Zachary and Stone, Meyer, plays Sid, Galavant’s squire, who’s doing his best to get the drunken, broke Galavant to get back in the saddle again after the heartbreak of Madalena. They join previously cast Vinnie Jones. Sasse is with ICM Talent, Olivia Bell Management and Authentic Talent; Jansen is with Innovative and Thruline.

UK-Bound 2014 Pilot Season? ABC Comedy ‘Galavant’ To Film There, Will Others Follow?
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

Comedy series have been immune from runaway production, with only dramas making the trek to other countries, mostly Canada. That is about to change. ABC/ABC Studios’ single-camera pilot Galavant, a comedy fairytale written by Dan Fogelman, with Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken writing the music, will shoot in the UK, including Wales. This is the first U.S. broadcast pilot to film in the UK since the country in April approved a tax credit that provides a 25% rebate on 80% of the production budget spent in the UK. Fox’s event series 24: Live Another Day was the first major U.S. TV series to set production in the UK after the new incentives were introduced. With the first U.S. pilot season under the new tax program just around the corner, will we see a boom of pilot production in the UK? That would be ironic because the British TV industry largely snubs the U.S. pilot system and goes straight to series with short orders.

The move to the UK is not as easy as relocating to Canada as productions that want to film on the island have to pass a “cultural test” or be an UK co-production. Galavant features a largely British cast, led by star Joshua Sasse and co-star Vinnie Jones, while 24: Live Another Day is set in London. Then there is the production space crunch in London brought on by the tax incentives, which reportedly diverted Showtime/Sky Atlantic’s series Penny Dreadful, set in Victorian London, to Dublin, while Starz’s series Outlander is filming near Glasgow — from a converted warehouse space. To alleviate the situation, Film London recently made 1.25 million square feet of additional filming space available, just in time for pilot season.

Wish Once could shoot overseas. This will be interesting to watch.

‘Psych’s Timothy Omundson Gets Starring Role In ABC Comedy Pilot ‘Galavant’
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

Galavant has found its king. Psych standout Timothy Omundson has been cast as the second lead opposite Joshua Sasse in ABC’s single-camera pilot Galavant, a comedy fairytale written by Dan Fogelman, with Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken writing the music. Galavant centers on handsome Prince Galavant (Sasse) — a classic once-upon-a-time hero, complete with sword, horse, great hair, courage, mad skills (like dragon-slaying and helping the poor) — and his quest for revenge over the evil King Richard (Omundson) who stole his one true love, the beautiful Madalena (Mallory Janesen). To Galavant’s shock, Madalena decided she prefers the King and his wealth and power to the love of penniless Galavant. I hear Omundson was Fogelman’s pick for the pivotal role from the get-go, and while it took a while, the actor was ultimately cast as King Richard, the last remaining part in the pilot which is about to begin production in London. Omundson, repped by Innovative Artists and manager Mike Bircumshaw, recently wrapped his eight-season turn as Detective Lassiter on USA’s dramedy Psych.

In the swinging for the fences department, musical fairy tale Galavant has come in quite good. It’s coming from a man who’s cracked the genre successfully before (albeit for kids) with Tangled, Dan Fogelman, though the question is whether the Princess Bride-style heightened reality premise and the musical element of Galavant can be sustained on a weekly basis and at a lower price tag than the pilot’s, said to be in the neighborhood of $8-$10 million.

Good luck with finding a cheap price abc. I would imagine it would be around ONCEs usual budget so they would have to get REALLY creative.

Well and then you factor in that this was, I'm assuming since it's a comedy, a half hour pilot. If that's the case, $8-10 million seems kind of crazy.

“GALAVANT”

Screenwriter/executive producer Dan Fogelman (“Crazy, Stupid, Love,” “Tangled,” “Cars”) teams up with Broadway and Hollywood award-winning musical team—composer Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “Beauty and the Beast”) and lyricist Glenn Slater (“The Little Mermaid,” “Tangled”)—for a musical comedy fairytale of epic proportions. Once upon a time, the dashing hero, Galavant (Joshua Sasse) lost the love of his life, Madalena (Mallory Jansen), to the evil King Richard (Timothy Omundson). Now, our fallen hero is ready to take revenge and restore his “happily ever after.” But it won’t be without a few twists and turns along the way.

“Galavant” stars Joshua Sasse as Galavant, Timothy Omundson as King Richard, Vinnie Jones as Gareth, Mallory Jansen as Madalena, Karen David as Isabella and Luke Youngblood as Sid.

“Galavant” is written and executive produced by Dan Fogelman. Executive producers are Alan Menken, Glenn Slater and Chris Koch. “Galavant” was directed by Chris Koch. Abbey C Studios Ltd. produces “Galavant” for ABC Studios.
Seriously, though, give me a trailer now, ABC.

I hope Vinnie Jones isn't singing because I can't imagine that sounding good.

If he does, I can't imagine they wouldn't play it for laughs.

* When one reporter likened the half-hour musical comedy Galavant to “Glee meets Once Upon a Time,” Lee countered with his own comparison: “Camelot meets The Princess Bride,” with music from Alan Menken and Dan Fogelman thrown in for good measure. The freshman series will air back-to-back episodes at midseason, bridging Once Upon a Time’s winter hiatus.
Love that it's airing during OUAT's hiatus, but hope airing two episodes at a time doesn't give the impression of being burn-off.

Learning from their mistakes I see. But yeah back2back is weird.

That was gold! :applaud

The trailer made this thing look awesome.

It looks like a mashup of The Princess Bride, Stardust, Shrek, Once, and SMASH, and sounds like it'll be tons of fun to watch.

back2back is weird.

Why is that weird? Once is an hour-long show (commercials included), and Galavant is a 30-minute show (commercials included), so if they didn't air two episodes a week, they'd have a 30-minute gap to fill in the 8-9 o'clock programming bloc.

It looks funny but it is not giving me any fairytale feels.

John Stamos will truly be a knight in shining armor this TV season.

Stamos has booked a guest-starring role on ABC's upcoming musical fairy tale series Galavant, ABC News reports. He'll play a dashing knight who's the longtime rival of Galavant (Joshua Sasse), and who goes up against the title character in a local joust.

Stamos, 50, will appear in at least one episode, with the possibility for his character to recur. "He's funny as hell, and he sings, and he looks like Lancelot wishes he looked," executive producer Dan Fogelman told ABC News. "We can't wait!"

Downton Abbey's Hugh Bonneville Joins ABC's Fairy Tale-Themed Galavant
By Michael Ausiello / August 4 2014, 10:56 AM PDT

Blimey! The Earl of Grantham is aye-ing a dramatic wardrobe change.

Downton Abbey patriarch Hugh Bonneville has signed on to guest star in ABC’s fairy tale-themed musical-comedy Galavant, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Bonneville will play Peter the Pillager, a Pirate King who Galavant and Co. encounter on their journey.

The 13-episode Galavant, which will air in early 2015 (bridging the gap between Once Upon a Time‘s fall and spring runs), centers on Prince Galavant (Rogue‘s Joshua Sasse handsome) as he seeks revenge over the king who stole his one true love.

Bonneville will shoot his guest stint this fall during his Downton Abbey hiatus.

Rutger Hauer Joins ABC Fairytale Comedy ‘Galavant’
by Nellie Andreeva

Floris, meet Galavant. In a nod to Paul Verhoeven’s cult 1969 series and a case of perfect casting, Floris star Rutger Hauer has been tapped for a recurring role on Dan Fogelman’s midseason musical fairytale comedy series Galavant, about a knight (Joshua Sasse) taking on the evil King Richard (Timothy Omundson) who stole the woman he loved. Hauer will play Kingsley, King Richard’s older, bigger and more badass brother who will threaten his little brother’s rule — and since he is a man so destined to be a great king that his parents named him Kingsley.

Best known for his role in another cult project, the 1982 movie Blade Runner, Dutch actor Hauer got his break in his native country when he landed the title role in Floris, also about a wronged knight taking on the big and powerful. “Myself and our producing director Chris Koch are the biggest Rutger fans of all time; Chris can practically recite Blade Runner from memory,” Fogelman told me. “While the musical comedy aspect of our show makes it obviously pretty different from Floris, there is something about merging the worlds — and a badass Rutger — that makes it pretty exciting.”

Hauer joins a formidable list of Galavant guest stars that includes John Stamos as a goateed knight, Hugh Bonneville as landlocked pirate Peter the Pillager, Ricky Gervais as a medieval magician named Xanax, and Weird Al Yankovic as a singing monk. Watch the first trailer for the show above.
