Fantastic Four: First Steps General News & Discussion Thread (TAG SPOILERS)

Pretty much my thoughts and if this movie really is a 60’s period piece like that art seems to be implying then I’m less interested in this project. While I’m sure a good movie could be made set in that era where the Beatles where all the rage, I much prefer a F4 movie set in modern day.

I was waiting for a comment like this. Movies like Pleasantville and Blast From The Past show how 50-60s can be done well. Even Loki has something of an art deco aesthetic. This will be a return to form for Marvel Studios. The 60s aesthetic is going to be a huge factor in its success, so much so that even fashion trends will be affected by this movie.

Deadpool 3 will be the shot in the arm the MCU needs to bring it back to life after the financial disaster that was The Marvels and F4 will be the adrenaline to keep it going until The Avengers movies

Worst kept casting secret ever.

They waited a bit too long since its like "they haven't been cast forever now?"

Im cool with the cast though. Only one I'm semi weary of is Quinn since Evans pretty much defined the character to me and i need an actor who can flame me on like he was able to do.

I like these actors generally, especially Kirby and Moss-Bachrach, but Pedro seems like a huge miscasting to me. Like they went for a big name rather than a good fit for Reed, which seems concerning in its desperation after this having such a troubled development.

Also, this version of Reed will never be believably cucked by Namor. That's for sure. :o

I don’t think Pedro is a miscasting. It’s just that Krasinski was the better choice. Pedro Pascal plays the father type better than Krasinski. Also Krasinski wants to be a director more than an actor. There is nothing anyone can do about that. The MCU isn’t as prestigious as it was before Endgame. Believe me Feige wanted John as his first choice but Pedro was the second best choice. It will all work out in the end and we the fans will win especially when Doom is revealed and his arc plays out

Yeah I don't want to be too much of a downer, but Pascal's casting killed a bit of my enthusiasm for an MCU Fantastic Four. I know a lot of people are saying that they'll wait and see him play the part before casting judgement. And I commend them for it. :deadpan:

I 100% agree with your sentiment but I think after we actually watch the full movie, I believe most of us will have changed our minds

Maybe recently, but what I like about him and Ebon (I don’t really know enough about the other two to comment) is across their careers, they have played some very different characters in some very different genres. They’re actors who conform themselves to the roles rather than stars who conform the roles to themselves. Pedro isn’t the first person I think of when I think of Reed Richards, but I have confidence that with the right script, director, production design etc., he can become Reed Richards.

Nothing against RDJ, but he didn’t play Tony Stark - he just turned Tony Stark into RDJ, and that worked and probably made Tony Stark more interesting than he was in the comics. But it wasn’t how I pictured Tony Stark prior to the films.

Well said

I haven't posted here for AGES because honestly, I burnt out on comic book movies and I felt Marvel (post Endgame) released average movie after average movie. Nothing excited me.

This casting though... I am pumped. I am hyped and I am here for it.

Vanessa Kirby has been a favourite actress of mine since I saw her in The Crown and I know Sue will be safe in her hands. I'm also glad they've cast a mature woman and not some 23 year old who falls for Pedro's older Reed Richards.

Roll on 2025!!!

Well, one piece of attention to detail that I am smiling about is Ebon being Jewish which is what Ben is and hopefully that will get brought up even in passing.... Now with Pedro officially Richards, the chemistry he has with the actor playing Doom will need to be epic...Mads and Pedro? Pedro and Ben? Pedro and Cillian?

I know it’s a long shot but Javier Bardem and Pedro would be EPIC

Not just Jewish, check out those baby blues.

Nice to see the cast finally confirmed. Took them long enough lol!

But I'm happy with it. FF is one of my most anticipated MCU films and so far I don't really have any reason to be concerned about how it'll turn out. I don't really buy the rumor that they shuffled through a ton of choices for Reed before settling on Pascal. And it going off the Reign of Marvel Studios book from last year, I get the impression that Jon Watts was more or less a placeholder before they hired Shakman.

Still assuming it'll start in the 60's and end with them in current day, but the aesthetic should be fun for one movie at least

Wonder how they'll tie it to Doom's origin, will he be an old man in the current day, or a child when the F4 disappear into the negative zone/multiverse?
I'm sure an old man Victor would find a way to stay young and vibrant til the modern day.

Krasinski was the obvious choice made even more clear when he played the role. For me though, being so obvious is what made him uninteresting to me.

Pedro is not someone I would've ever considered. And while his casting was a little jarring at first, that also made it more exciting. I don't know what to expect from him, but I know he's an incredible actor. So his performance is the last thing I'm worried about with this movie. The cast in general is really strong imo.

All eyes on Dr. Doom now.

I am afraid that Doom won't have a backstory with the FF and he is just gonna end up an Avengers villain. Basically, generic dictator without the complex backstory with Reed that sets him up as an interesting character. I hope i am wrong, but that's where I think we are going

Cast ranking:

1) Moss-Bachrach
2) Kirby
3) Pascal
4) Quinn

I'm sure I'll enjoy Pascal as Richards, but it would've been a lot of fun to see him as Doctor Doom.

I'd hate that too. I hope Feige would know better. And that's always been my main criticism of a 60s setting within the context of the MCU. How Doom would fit into that scheme?

I've always liked the idea of the collapse of Sokovia playing a role in his rise. Say the historical name of the region where it was is Latveria and after Ultron and Thanos, Doom came along and united it under him.

Doom is more complex than Thanos. I Hope Feige understands this

It’s been fun posting here all. But I will be moving on to X Men casting now

Nicholas Cage.

We have never heard anything about Doom having a major role in this movie, if at all. So, if we are somehow looking at possibly the FF being self contained until Secret Wars or them somehow ending up in the proper Marvel at the end, well....that seems to all not involve Doom. Especially if Doom ends up popping up in another project like Black Panther 3 or something. So at this point this is something I am concerned about.

He stole GIRLS from Adam Driver in the latter seasons and rules on The Bear, he's the best part about this...

...respect Kirby in the M:I films and Quinn was the best part of Stranger Things.

Yeah, throughout this whole process, Ebon MB is the one name that made me say “Yes!!”.

A lot of people were floating names of comedic actors, but while Ben definitely has a sense of humor, what really defines him is he’s something of an old-school streetwise tough-guy (with a hidden softer side).

I think EMB can definitely pull that off.

I'm pleasantly surprised that they delivered the cast as rumoured, they'll be fantastic no pun intendedas all 4 are quality actors. I was worried 1 at least would be swapped out for the sake of saying the leaks were wrong.

Now it all comes down to the story, please be good.

Yeah, I'm probably most excited about Kirby - absolutely all upside there in my view. Pedro is great, I just need to see more before I can start thinking of him as Reed. I don't know enough about the other 2 to have a useful opinion.

If they were doing a contemporary setting I wouldn't be too concerned. But its definitely a huge question mark since they seem to be going in the period piece direction at the bare minimum.

I wouldn't be concerned if it was a present day setting, either. Or even a 60s one if we had some indication Doom was going to be e central figure here, but all evidence is he won't be and it's a FF vs Galactus/Surfer movie without Doom. So I don't see where he fits into that tapestry, unfortunately
