This Futuristic Racer Is Headed To The Wii U. September 16, 2014 . 11:00am

F-Zero hasn’t been around for a while, and Wipeout appears to be on a hiatus as well. This is one of the games that is trying to fill that void.

Does that look like a nice screenshot? It’s from a game titled Fast Racing Neo, being developed by Shin’en Multimedia for the Wii U.

F-Zero hasn’t been around for a while, and Wipeout appears to be on a hiatus as well. In the absence of the two franchises, a number of smaller developers that aren’t affiliated with either Nintendo or Sony have stepped up to try and fill the void of futuristic racers. Shin’en are one of these developers.

In 2011, Shin’en released a game titled FAST – Racing League for WiiWare. The fast-paced racer ran at 60 frames-per-second with two players playing in splitscreen, and utilized a neat “phase-switching” feature that made it so tracks would have “positive” and “negative” strips that sped you up or slowed you down, depending on the phase of your craft.

FAST was well-received, and ever since, Shin’en have been working on a follow-up for the Wii U. Today, they released a single screenshot (above) from the Wii U game, titled Fast Racing Neo, and said that more information would be available next week.

Shin’en, despite being a tiny studio, are well-known in indie circles for their technical prowess, so it isn’t surprising that the screen looks as nice as it does. The studio has always prided itself on pushing technical limits, even dating back to their games on the Game Boy Advance, where they released Iridion 3D.

Look out for more coverage of Fast Racing Neo on Siliconera in the future. In the meantime, you can read up on the original FAST in this interview we conducted with Shin’en back in 2010.

Nintendo May Not Be Making F-Zero, But FAST: Racing Neo For Wii U Is Shaping Up. June 3, 2015 . 9:59am

Shin’en have revealed the first in-game screenshots of FAST from an alpha build of the game.

Ever since Sony closed down their Wipeout studio and Nintendo expressed their disinterest in making a new F-Zero, other game developers have begun creating projects of their own that are inspired by the two futuristic racers.

That said, while there are quite a few ambitious Wipeout and F-Zero “clones” in development at the moment, one of them is actually coming this year, and it’s from a developer with a proven track record. That game is FAST: Racing Neo by Shin’en, who will release the high-speed racer for Wii U later this year.

Today, Shin’en revealed the first in-game screenshots of FAST from an alpha build of the game, adding that more information on the title would be shared at E3. You can find the screens above and below.

We’ll have more information on FAST in the future.

F-Zero’s Jack “Mr. Zero” Merluzzi Is Fast Racing Neo’s Announcer. September 23, 2015 . 10:30am

Jack Merluzzi, who provided voices for F-Zero GX, will be appearing in Fast Racing Neo.

Jack Merluzzi is returning to the world of racing. The voice actor responsible for the voice of Mr. Zero, the cyborg announcer for F-Zero GX, and other racers in-game, will be providing voice acting for Shin’en Multimedia’s Fast Racing Neo. The exact role of Merluzzi has yet to be stated, but the wording of Shin’en’s announcement suggests he will be the game’s only voice actor.

Fast Racing Neo is a racing game for up to four players that involves racing around tracks in anti-gravity vehicles. (Kind of like F-Zero?) The game will support motion controls and off-screen play.

FAST Racing NEO Brings F-Zero Style Racing To Wii U On December 10th. December 8, 2015 . 4:00pm

If you’re after a futuristic, fast-paced racer then FAST Racing NEO should do the trick.

[YT]yaczCCrXmu8[/YT]
Fancy a spiritual successor to F-Zero? Well, FAST Racing NEO is set to speed its way onto the Wii U this December 10th, and it’ll cost $15. That should hopefully fill that hole.

It is, of course, a futuristic racing game that’s been developed by Germany-based studio Shin’en Multimedia. And it has the voice acting talent of Jack Merluzzi, who voiced Mr. Zero, the cyborg announcer in F-Zero GX.
FAST Racing NEO will run at 60 frames per second and has a single player campaign, as well as offline and online multiplayer modes to keep you occupied.

Nintendo has confirmed that Fast RMX from Shin’en Multimedia, and Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment and Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove from Yacht Club Games will make up the Nintendo eShop launch lineup for Nintendo Switch on March 3.
Here are brief overviews of each game:

  • Fast RMX from Shin’en Multimedia: Challenge your friends to local split-screen competition or take part in online races against players from all over the world. This lightning-fast anti-gravity racer is exclusive to Nintendo Switch.
  • Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment from Yacht Club Games: The latest DLC for the critically acclaimed hit Shovel Knight is a full-featured game starring Specter Knight, one of the enemies from the original game. The massive campaign includes even more content than the last DLC, Plague of Shadows. Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment is exclusive to Nintendo Switch for a limited time.
  • Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove from Yacht Club Games: For Shovel Knight‘s biggest fans, Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove includes the original Shovel Knight game, as well as all previously released DLC – even Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment! Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove will be exclusive to Nintendo Switch for a limited time.
Additionally, Nintendo will host a “Nindies Showcase” video presentation on Tuesday, February 28 at 9:00 a.m. PT at Nintendo.com where it will showcase many of the upcoming downloadable indie titles for Switch. According to the company, more than 60 indie games will be released for Switch via the Nintendo eShop this year.
Finally, Nintendo shared some additional information about the launch of the Nintendo eShop on Switch:

  • People who already have funds in their accounts on other Nintendo devices can access them using a shared wallet that works on Nintendo Switch as well. Once they link their Nintendo Network ID and Nintendo Account and then their Nintendo Account to their Nintendo Switch system, this functionality becomes possible.
  • Virtual Console games will not be available on Nintendo Switch at launch. We will share more information in the future.
A news feature will offer updates about the latest additions to Nintendo eShop, as well as providing information about upcoming games and other updates from Nintendo.
  • To access Nintendo eShop, a system update that will be available on launch day is required. The system update downloads in the background, is designed to install quickly and doesn’t disrupt gameplay.
  • After visiting Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch for the first time, gamers can also purchase Nintendo Switch digital games on Nintendo.com. Users can purchase the games on Nintendo’s website and have them download automatically to their Nintendo Switch system at home or on the go, wherever there is a Wi-Fi connection.
Switch is due out worldwide on March 3.

is Fast RMX only going to be digital?

So I only just discovered this game... and its considered to be the spiritual successor to F-Zero? I'm hoping Nintendo would release a new game on the Switch. :(

a new F-Zero game??

yeah, they should, and it's weird they haven't done much with that franchise.

Nintendo is all about their colorful characters and mascots, and F-Zero has that ( or at least the 1st game did as I remember it ).

If they ever dabble into VR, I can see an F-Zero VR game being amazing!

Fast RMX Is The Definitive Edition Of Fast Racing Neo. March 14, 2017 . 12:00pm

Fast RMX improves and adds so much to the Fast Racing Neo experience, giving Nintendo Switch owners a wonderful racer to enjoy at launch.

20 comments Read >

The Nintendo Switch is a system that is well suited to multiplayer games. It gives us this opportunity to easily break off a second controller and begin playing with another person absolutely everywhere. Having games that take advantage of and show this off at launch feels like a no-brainer. Fast RMX is one such game. This updated edition of the Nintendo Wii U’s Fast Racing Neo is a solid game that not only offers the same style and challenge as something like F-Zero or Wipeout, but is more approachable, balanced, and expansive than the original game.

The original Fast Racing Neo was hard. This was a difficult game that required you to play on-point. You needed to know your turns, when to switch colors to take advantage of the boosts appearing on the tracks, memorize the raceways so you wouldn’t go careening off, and basically master your favorite cars. I found Fast RMX more forgiving. A big part of this comes down to the difficulty. The game has been rebalanced for the Nintendo Switch. While the other, computer-controlled racers were difficult, it seemed like they weren’t as aggressive as before. Well, on the lower difficulty levels, anyway. In Super and Hypersonic, I’m convinced some of the virtual racers are cheating.

The biggest changes have come to Fast RMX’s vehicles. They are easier to control and sum up. Of course, changing them so each has acceleration, boost, top speed, and weight stats help. The boost stat was absent before and having this figure there makes it easier to make informed choices and notice differences in how various ships handle. The handling in general feels better and more comprehensive, as I felt less like I was flailing and bouncing off of walls while attempting and learning new tracks. Each one also looks different and better than it did in Fast Racing Neo, which means they look much better when speeding down those tracks.

Speaking of which, Fast RMX adds new tracks to the game. Caldera Post, Cameron Crest, Hanger Games, Neo Kyoto, Tepaneca Vale, and Waimea Coast are all new. You might not notice them right away, since the existing cups have had their compositions altered to make room for them in there. You’ll also notice on the tracks that the boosts and mid-air areas have been adjusted. When you dash, you lose a little bit of speed. This never happened before. Also, you don’t lose as much speed when you’re flying over gaps, especially if you hit a boost before you do. It speeds things up a bit. All of them look and run well, making quite an impression when you play through the game.

Though, to be fair, much of Fast RMX makes an impression. When docked, it definitely is one of the most impressive looking Nintendo Switch games. The cars and tracks look amazing, and it runs at 60 FPS. It’s a very smooth experience. There’s also the HD rumble feature, so you’re really feeling when you’re racing, boosting, and hitting the walls. That’s quite a nice touch. But, even when undocked, it is a very pretty game.

As is, Fast RMX is one of the games that stands out on the Nintendo Switch eShop. Fast Racing Neo was a good effort for people who enjoyed F-Zero style fast and frantic racing. Fast RMX is a larger and more accessible version of that. Combined with a commitment from Shin’en to make it even larger with an update that adds a Time Attack mode and offers online friend match support, this is absolutely a great racer to welcome people to the system and give you a chance to practice your skills.

Fast RMX is available for the Nintendo Switch.

When will they release the physical copy of the game?

I could just install it on the SD, but loading times would be slower. I would much rather have the game on the cartridge. :(

I have it installed on my SD and haven't noticed poor load times at all. Of course, I'm mostly focused on how ****ing hard this game is to pay any mind to load times.
