Favorite LGBTQ2S+ Films

Given the events of last week, my heart goes out to my fellow queer Hypesters. I hate that we’re in this place right now, and I’m sorry that a bunch of people in the US decided that our lives don’t matter.

One thing that brought me a little bit of joy last week was this movie I watched called “Am I OK?” with Dakota Johnson, Kiersey Clemons and Sonoya Mizuno. It’s truly a shame that talented actors like Dakota and Kiersey got conned into starring in a couple of the worst superhero movies ever made (Madame Web and The Flash), but hopefully they both will continue to appear in more interesting stuff like this film. Mild spoilers (not really though), Dakota plays a woman who comes out to her best friend in her 30s and has a lot of self-doubt and nervousness about it, which I really related to as someone who didn’t come out until their mid-30s. While it’s encouraging to see so many people come out way earlier in life these days, I can’t help but feel a bit envious that I didn’t have that courage or self-understanding to do so when I was younger. But times were a bit different then. Of course, given the events of last week, it feels even more dangerous to come out now.

Anyway though, I highly recommend the movie. The characters are really charming and Dakota gives probably the best performance of her career. Also, icon Tig Notaro directed the film and has a small role.

Uncle Frank was a mix of beautiful and sad. The fake out death still bugs me.

Do you consider Scream to be LGBTQ? I have heard that Stuart and Billy are actually written to be lovers. When you watch it with that background the film takes on a completely different understanding, especially as you watch the scenes where they interact. Billy was an abuser of the worst kind.

I mean Scary Movie picked up on it. :o

But I think there's a YouTube clip that paints them in this context.

I watched Bottoms over the weekend and really enjoyed it too :yay:

I didn't even realize Nicholas Galitzine was in this!

If Galatzine keeps appearing in queer movies, I’m going to need him to come out as gay or bi. Not for any reason other than because it means I might have a shot with him. :o

Well, Wicked seemed hella gay to me, even if the core characters are (apparently) straight. Then again, the Prince flirted with characters of all genders, Ariana Grande said that Glinda is probably a little in the closet, and Bowen Yang’s character was DEFINITELY gay. And seriously, I got major sapphic vibes between Elphaba and Glinda. They would probably both be happier if they just became a throuple with the Prince.

And the movie has plenty of queer icons in the cast like Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey and Yang. So yeah, I think it counts. Also, go see it! It’s amazing.

I watched Lonesome last night which is about a gay cowboy exploring Sydney. It was pretty good but it did get pretty explicit at the end and kind of had its own requiem for a dream moment. It’s funny, I still feel like a lot of queer art is very age phobic and for some reason they always portray older people as sleazy or like, a symbol of the main character hitting rock bottom. It’s a shame we can’t move past that as a community

I watched this last night and gee it was such a heartwarming film

It’s called The Wedding Banquet and literally every actor is amazing in it. I would definitely recommend checking it out

I have to watch this! Didn’t realize it was out yet. So happy to see Kelly Marie Tran again and it’s great that she recently felt comfortable enough to come out. F*** every last incel Star Wars fan who bullied her online. And f*** JJ Abrams too for basically writing her out of TROS. Though to be fair, he was unintentionally doing her a favor by mostly keeping her out of that joke of a movie.

I’m in the south this week and I was chowing down on some fried green tomatoes and it made me remember the movie of the same name. While it was subtle, Fried Green Tomatoes is a lovely lesbian love story (a point that flew over the heads of many people in the 1990s lol). I never read the book but apparently it’s far less ambiguous than in the film. Still, the movie is a queer classic and worth checking out if you haven’t seen it. Amazing performances by Mary Louise Parker, Mary Stuart Masterson, Kathy Bates, Cicely Tyson and Jessica Tandy.

happy pride month everyone.

I recently saw Trick

It was ok but a bit dated. It was made in the 90s so it was a bit moralising but it was still a cute rom comish type film

Happy Pride Month!

Glad to see this thread make a comeback. Sadly I haven’t seen many queer movies lately but I’ve been watching some very queer TV shows that I highly recommend. Survival of the Thickest on Netflix is fantastic. While the primary character (Michelle Buteau, who I love btw and is one of the few comedians who isn’t afraid to call out Dave Chappelle for his hateful, transphobic bulls***) is straight, the show is very queer overall and features another lead character who begins to explore her queerness in depth. Also, trans drag queen icon Peppermint plays herself on the show and is featured prominently. It’s just a very cute, sweet show about celebrating who you really are.

Also, Hacks wrapped up another stellar season. If you’re queer and you’re not watching that show, what are you doing with your life? LOL

I can’t believe I forgot to mention The Last of Us season 2. I enjoyed season 1, but season 2 took it to another level and I thought every episode was damn near perfect. The Ellie/Dina love story is beyond adorable and Bella Ramsey and Isabela Merced (two queer actors btw) just crush it.

But of course the internet will tell you season 2 sucks because too many women or because basement dwelling incels don’t find Bella as HAWT as the video game character they used lust over while they played TLOU 2 one-handed.

Posted this in the other Pride Month thread but it’s worth posting here too.

Tina Romero, daughter of the great George Romero, has a movie coming out his year called “Queens of the Dead.” Here is the synopsis:

The film follows a group of drag queens, club kids and frenemies who must put aside their personal dramas and use their unique skills to fight the brain-thirsty undead when a zombie apocalypse breaks out on the night of a giant warehouse party.

Starring Katy O’Brien, Margaret Cho and Cheyenne Jackson.

This one definitely shot to the top of my list!

Happy Pride Month, Friends!

Like my dear friend @Deck Rickard, I too have sadly fallen behind on my queer movie viewing schedule. There's just so damn much superhero content to get through! I know, priorities priorities...

I'm definitely gonna try and squeeze a few in this month. I recently added William Friedkin's Cruising to my digital collection, simply because I feel it's such an important part of queer cinema history...

There's a few classic queer movies that have been on my radar forever but I've just never gotten around to, titles like Longtime Companion, Parting Glances, and It's My Party. Sadly, many of the classics aren't readily available to stream, at least here in Canada. I did find Longtime Companion on YouTube but the quality is so poor, it's like the camera lens was smeared with Vaseline while the movie was being filmed :csad:

Red, White & Royal Blue looks cute and that one is easily available on Prime so I might give it a whirl sometime this month...

I also want to give another shoutout to Paul Etheredge-Ouzts' Hellbent for fans of queer horror cinema. It looks and feels a lot like Carpenter's seminal Halloween, which is some of the highest praise I can possibly think to give

Thanks, BG! Yeah definitely check out Red, White and Royal Blue. Great performances by Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez and a sweet little love story. Galitzine is also great in the HELLA gay series, Mary & George. I recommend that one as well. All these queer roles should help Galitzine in what will certainly be his gayest performance yet - He-Man.

I’m dying to know your thoughts on cruising, back on the day queer people HATED it but I think it deserves a rethink. If it was released today people would see it as the genius film it is. I think we need more films like it

Currently watching Joshua Tree 1951: A Portrait of James Dean. It’s very artsy (or thinks it is lol) and it’s hard to get into. It explores the queer elements of Dean’s life, which is great, but tries to be abstract and surreal to the point where I’m finding it hard to connect with. There is a really hot sex scene though lol.

The guy playing Dean looks enough like him and he’s nice to look at but I’m not really vibing with his performance. While I like that this film isn’t just briefly touching on Dean’s private life as a (I think) pansexual man like the James Franco movie did, I still don’t feel like I’m getting much out of it. Franco (who is a despicable person but we don’t need to get into that) wowed me with his performance in that film and I found Dean to just be a fascinating person; I honestly didn’t know much about his personal life prior to that. Here, I’m gathering that he likes to go cruising for dudes and occasionally women and… that’s it? I have about halfway to go though so maybe it will pick up. Still, I generally don’t start working on my review of a film until I finish said film unless something about it is keeping me from wanting to watch the rest so, take from that what you will.

I wish someone would do a really good biopic on Dean’s life that explored things like his complicated relationship with his father (which the Franco film did well) along with his sexuality and his approach to acting and his drive to be a star. One thing that I’ve always found fascinating about him is that he seemed to view his queerness as being kind of badass and indicative of his “rebel” outlook on life. He supposedly supported the idea of Rebel Without a Cause to subtly depict a polyamorous relationship between his character, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo. Which is all pretty awesome if you consider the time he lived in, when gay or bi/pan men were looked at as being weak and effeminate (that’s not to say that there is anything “weak” about femininity; simply pointing out that that’s how homophobes and misogynists view it). But here was a guy who was apparently bucking the trend of rising queer male stars who were being forced into closets and paired up with young women by publicists. And more to that, he was casually open about it to the point where he supposedly bragged to friends that he had slept with some of the top male stars in Hollywood. On the other hand though, he supposedly also rebuffed advances by Rock Hudson (which is fine; just because a handsome guy is into you it doesn’t mean you have to be interested) but he apparently made some crude, homophobic remarks about it that were obviously awful.

Of course, we don’t know how much of this (or any of it) is true. But I would really like to get to know the real James Dean more, whoever that truly was.
