Favorite non-Marvel Studios films?

My list (i count only 1998+ movies and not Kick-Ass as not a Marvel title related). So from top to down:

1) X-Men: First Class
2) X-Men 2
3) Spider-Man 2
4) Blade 2
5) Spider-Man
6) Daredevil (director's cut)
7) Hulk
8) X-Men
9) Punisher: War Zone
10) The Punisher
11) Blade
12) Ghost Rider
13) Spider-Man 3
14) Blade: Trinity
15) X-Men: The Last Stand
16) Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
17) Fantastic Four
18) Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
19) Elektra
20) Man-Thing

1. Spider-Man 2
2. Kick-Ass
3. Spider-Man
4. X-Men: First Class
5. X2

And I think the first four of those are better than any MS movie. Iron Man is better than X2, but none of the MS are as good as those five films.

Switch X-Men:FC and Spider-Man, and that would probably be my list. Though I'd put Iron Man above both X2 and Spider-man, I otherwise also agree with your sentiment that they are better than the other MS movies so far. I really did love Captain America though, and if I were making a list of all Marvel movies, it would probably go right after X2 on that list.

I'd still contend that Marvel Studios has better quality output on average than any other studio when it comes to superhero movies.

To me they're at best on par with TIH(which I consider to be the weakest of the MCU films, basically a 7/10). I find the MCU films as a whole to be on a whole higher level up than any of these outside studio films.

So what's the lowest they deserve?

Of all the non-Marvel studios films that were listed in what I quoted? Oh Spider-man 1, definitely. I give that a 6/10, which it still technically a positive score(I rank my scores being good or bad much the way RT does with it's tomato-meter). I'd give the first 1/2 of SM1 about an 8/10 until the Green Goblin shows up and then it drops to a 4/10 for me. So it averages to a 6/10. The rest of those I'd probably give a 7/10.

They all have some really good bits in them but they also have some seriously irritating elements as well. About the only time I ever got irritated with an MCU film was in TIH with Hulk yet again not being allowed to be a character.

I averaged all the rotten tomato user and critic scores for all the superhero (Marvel/DC) movies since Spider-man for each studio.

Marvel Studios - 79%
Fox - 60%
New Line - 60% (the Blade films)
Sony - 58% (dragged down by Ghost Rider movies)
Warner Bros - 57% (Green Lantern, Catwoman and Jonah Hex hurt their score)
Universal - 48% (Hulk)
Lionsgate - 45% (the Punisher films)

Still, I think these other studios opened the door to Marvel to even have a film studio of their own. Movies like Blade, X-Men and Spider-Man made people care about movies based on Marvel characters.

No doubt and Marvel Studio's strategy now is pretty clear. Turn a bad situation/weakness into a positive one/strength. They had farmed out all their main properties and now they were locked up in the hands of strangers, but these studios were going to get the balls rolling and MS could basically spend a decade and sit back and carefully observe how all these films panned out. I'm sure they were taking notes on just what does and doesn't work with regard to this genre of film and letting those outside studios take the hits when the f***ed up and once MS was in a position to make their own movies they came out with extremely good results. That's smart.

Its largely making a virtue of necessity, mind. They had to sell movie rights years back because it was all they could do to stave off bankruptcy. . . and then, once various successes established that super hero movies could work, they only had second tier characters to work with.

Still, they've done a damn good job of making lemonade.

Opinions are fair. I'd say the MCU films are more faithful to their comic origins than the other studios, but most of the MCU films are either mediocre to me (TIH, Iron Man 2, Captain America) or fun, but very forgettable (Thor).

The five I listed stick out in my mind, along with Iron Man 1, more than any other Marvel film made to date. To me, those films all had personality. Be it Raimi, Vaughn or Singer, they all felt like they were made by someone with a story they wanted to tell and characters they wanted to explore. My problem with MCU is none of them feel organic or human. It feels like assembly line filmmaking to me.

TIH is my favorite Marvel film so far, it's sad to see it got lesser love than it was aimed for
