70's is a no brainer- Star Wars: A New Hope
80's, it's a REALLY tuff choice but I guess I'd have the pick Terminator 1
90's I'd have to say The Matrix (although Terminator 2: Judgement day is a very close 2nd)
00's would be Iron Man

Because the 80's had a lot of great Sci-fi action movies I just wanted to mention a few more of my Favorites:
Aliens
Bladerunner (was that the 80's or the 70's)
Predator
The Empire Strikes Back

Hurm, I'm going to do more than one per decade:

1970s: Star Wars, A Clockwork Orange and Alien.
1980s: The Empire Strikes Back, Blade Runner and Return of the Jedi
1990s: Jurassic Park and The Matrix
2000s: Minority Report, Spider-Man 2 and District 9 (pretty weak selection)

This decade is off to a great start though with Inception, in my opinion.

I'm doing a couple of more because I want to.

Before 1950's:Metropolis
1950's:The Day The Earth Stood Still
1960's:Planet of The Apes and 2001
1970's:Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes
1980's:Tron or Blade Runner
1990's:12 Monkeys or Gattaca
2000's:Children of Men

1970s: A Clockwork Orange
1980s: Aliens
1990s: The Matrix
2000s: District 9

In my opinion the best is the matrix (my favorite movie, so I'm biased). It just the perfect blend of action and brains while still maintain 100% entertaining through out the entire movie.

1970s: Alien
1980s: Blade Runner (maybe)
1990s: The Matrix
2000s: The Fountain

1970s - Alien and Star Wars

1980s - The Terminator, Aliens, Predator, RoboCop, The Thing The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi

1990s - Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Predator 2, Jurassic Park, Starship Troopers, Total Recall, Alien 3 and RoboCop 2

2000s - District 9

Wow, for some reason I thought Aliens had come out in the 90s. Guess that's a testament to how good that film looks.

70s: Star Wars
80s: Blade Runner
90s: Jurassic Park
00s: Children of Men

70s: Star Wars
80s: Aliens (and Predator)
90s: Terminator 2
00s: Avatar

70s: Alien, Mad Max, Star Wars, Logans Run
80s: Empire Strikes Back, Blade Runner, Aliens, Predator, Robocop, Terminator
90s: Matrix, Total Recall, T2, Alien 3, Face/Off, The Fifth Element
00s: Minority Report, X-2, Pitch Black, Iron Man, Children of Men, I Robot, District 9

Ok, I am not going to include Star Wars movies or comic book adaptations.

I see that you specified sci-fi 'action' movies, but folk are just picking sci-fi films in general, so I will put SR in there.

70s: Silent Running
80s: Robocop
90s: The Matrix
00s: I Am Legend

It is pretty funny how you are being so particular about folk only picking sci-fi 'action' films, when you have listed a movie with no sci-fi elements in it at all, to my memory anyway, in 'Highlander'.
I have not watched any of the sequels, as I heard they were so bad, so I don't care if they retroactively made out they were aliens from somewhere or other later on, the original movie is all based on magic. It's not a sci-fi movie.

edit: Also, I have to say, it kind of defeats the purpose of the thread if everyone just makes big lists of all the sci-fi movies they really liked in that decade, because most of the lists end up looking exactly the same. You don't get a sense of what ones are actually people's favourites.

Yea I wanna add Mad Max 2 to my 80s list as well. Can't believe I forgot that after choosing the first one.

Heh, I didn't even notice the 'action' part in the title :o

Mad Max 2 aka The Booze Warrior(as it was released in Australia) is, strictly speaking, not sci-fi, not anymore anyway. The events of that movie are basically what happens over in Australia between the hours of 10pm- 10am, ever since they brought in a law to stop 24/7 booze shops.

70s: Star Wars
80s: The Empire Strikes Back
90s: Terminator 2 Judgment Day/The Matrix
00s: None, really

Extras as others are doing earlier decades:

1920s: Metropolis

1930s: Bride of Frankenstein, Frankenstein and The Invisible Man

1940s: I don't think there was much sci-fi this decade other than the B-sequels to Frankenstein and its knock-offs

1950s: Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Day the Earth Stood Still and Forbidden Planet

1960s: Planet of the Apes and 2001: A Space Odyssey

I just realized that nobody has mentioned two all-time great remakes for the '80s: The Thing and/or The Fly. Very interesting.

1970's: Star Wars: A New Hope
1980's: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
1990's Jurassic Park
