I'm back onto the Hype, since I have been away for at least two months and a half. :woot:

While I was away, I've been writing a lot of original stories and it has got me thinking of creating this thread. :ilv:

This thread is open to all genres of books.

Who are your favourite female characters in fiction and literature?

I've always liked Paksenarrion Dorthansdotter ever since I read "Sheepfarmer’s Daughter" back in '89.

Alias from "Azure Bonds" is really cool as well.

Ivy from "Man from Mundania" is another good one.

Any other characters I should learn about?

Lyra Belacqua of His Dark Materials.

Mina Murray in Alan Moore's imagination.

Selina Kyle when the writer in question isn't trying to **** her up.

Emma Frost when she's written well (which doesn't happen nearly enough)

I had a soft spot for:
Ursula Todd from Life After Life
Celia from The Night Circus
Karou from Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy

i don't have the stalwarts Katniss and Tris on my list cuz they're not my favorites. I don't hate them per se, but i just don't particularly have any attachment to them. I prefer Katniss of the two though

Ursula - One Hundred Years of Solitude
Lyra Belacqua - His Dark Materials

I loved the Anita Blake books until they went to porn. She was badass but had great development and they lost it all about ten books in. Up until then though they're a great ten books.

Lyra Belacqua from the His Dark Materials series. Blanche DuBois from A Streetcar Named Desire. Hermione (book Hermione) from the Potter series. Rei Ayanami from the Evangelion manga. Pandora Braithwaite from the Adrian Mole diaries. Hmm, lots and lots.

It is notably difficult to think of many really strong ones from works created prior to the 20th century.

There are strong characters like Shakespeare's Lady MacBeth and Cleopatra who are not really that likeable. Equally, there are "nicer" characters like Cordelia who are a bit dull.

I've also liked Karrin Murphy, Mab and Molly Carpenter from the Dresden Files books. I liked how we've seen Molly grow up from barely a teen to an interesting and powerful character over the course of the series. Karrin is fun because she's a no-nonsense cop up until she had to deal with Harry a lot and deal with all the weird crap he brings in. Mab is almost literally a force of nature and the way she messes with Harry is hilarious. From the same books I like Leansidhe, Harrys Fairy Godmother (yes really), she's crazy, some times a monster and wants to turn Harry into a Hound to keep him safe. Really.

Brienne from Game of Thrones is awesome since she's one of the few actual 'good' characters in a series that really doesn't allow for them. Same with Sansa who is nowhere near as good in the show as the books. Arya is lots of fun as well, I can't wait to see where she goes next.

Alice Liddell - The Alice Books, by Lewis Carroll
Elizabeth Bennett - Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen
Dolores Haze - Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov
Juliet Montague - Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare
Wang Xifeng - Dream of the Red Chamber, by Cao Xueqin
Tsukasa - .hack//SIGN, written by Kazunori Ito, directed by Koichi Mashimo
Clarissa Harlowe - Clarissa, by Samuel Richardson
Jo March - Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott
Francie Nolan - A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by Betty Smith
Lena Grove - Light in August, by William Faulkner
Caddy Compson - The Sound and the Fury, by William Faulkner
Anne Shirley - Anne of Green Gables series, by Lucy Maud Montgomery
Mary Lennox - The Secret Garden, by Francis Hodgson Burnett
Lucy Pevensie - The Narnia series, by C.S. Lewis
Jill Pole - The Silver Chair, by C.S. Lewis
Coraline Jones - Coraline, by Neil Gaiman
Undine Spragg - The Custom of the Country, by Edith Wharton

I thought of her, but remember her to be a somewhat blank slate skirting the fringes of events, as most children are.

Amy Dunne in Gone Girl
Annie Wilkes in Misery

I liked Lauren Matthews from Girl, Missing by Sophie McKenzie, it's a good book.

Biggest crush is Scarlet Witch from Age of Ultron
but Gwen Stacy from The Amazing Spider-Man is a pretty great, developed female character.

I've always thought Fleur Delacour from Harry Potter was an underrated character.
