I was discussing the Hobbit films with a friend of mine the other day and I was expressing my disdain for the Radagast character. While the two films are perhaps too drawn out and not quite in the same class as the LOTR trilogy, I enjoyed them very much, other than Radagast and his stupid bunny sled and birdsh**-stained hair.

My friend referred to him as the Jar-Jar Binks of the Hobbit/LOTR series, and I had to really agree. He's one of those characters that is so over-the-top annoying that the series would be better off without him (which is why I was very pleased to see that he was barely in Desolation of Smaug).

It got me thinking, who are some other Jar-Jars in other films or franchises? Which characters are the ones that bug you and you wish you could either remove them from the film(s) or at least drastically reduce their roles? I guess you could do this with films you love or films you hate, though films you hate probably have a multitude of characters you'd want removed.

Here are some that come to mind for me:

The Fifth Element - Ruby Rhod. I wouldn't remove him altogether but I'd certainly trim his role down. He is really annoying.

The Dark Knight Rises - Foley. He wasn't terribly irritating but he just seemed like an unnecessary distraction who took time away from more interesting characters.

The Matrix Trilogy - Mifune, that kid and pretty much everyone else in Zion. Again, I couldn't bring myself to give a crap about any of these people. A big part of what made the Matrix sequels fail (IMO) was there wasn't enough development of the three central characters from the first film, Neo, Trinity and Morpheus.

I also feel like The Architect would be the other Jar-Jar in that series, for obvious reasons. Once he showed up, it was pretty much the point of no return.

Willie-Temple of Doom.

Don't get me wrong, I can tolerate her but she gets annoying at times.

Not a single one of those characters besides Ruby from The Fifth Element is even remotely close to being as annoying as Jar Jar Binks. He's kind of in a league of his own.

The barmaid in the invisible man. She made me hate this movie when I first watched it.

Darcy in the Thor movies. Annoying pointless character and a pathetic excuse for comedy.

Iron-Man 2: Justin Hammer

The Dark Knight: "NO MOAR DEAD COPS!"

Spider-Man 2: Peter Parker

The Lord of the Rings: Peter Hackson

I thought Justin Hammer was the highlight of Iron Man 2.

"Evil" Peter Parker (the evulz signified by emo hair and disco dancing) was the Jar Jar of Spider-Man 3.

I think Jar Jar and Ruby are in a class of their own. You can't just throw in random somewhat irritating characters for the sake of it, like the 'No More Dead Cops' Cop. He wasn't even that bad. He had one line and I can see a big city cop saying that in real life.

I'll put in support for 'Evil' Peter Parker though. He was just annoying than menacing.

Mary Corleone from The Godfather Part III. That movie would be so much better without her.

I love Kat, but yes, it becomes a problem when her character's dialog are just one-liners. Just like Guy Pierce's awful character 'Snow' in Lockout. Literally just jokes, one lines and clichés.

What makes humorous characters like the Droids work is that they served a purpose, not everything is a joke (though it's cute to see them fruitfully unaware of the situation like 3PO seeing Han being frozen in Carbonite.), and they're competent at something.

They need to show redeeming qualities..humility, not just a running gag. I think Olaf in Frozen could've been a Jar-Jar, but no..instead he became a great character who cared about his new friends.

She was just..awful. But I think it's more on Sofia. She was a huge miscast. I've never seen such a bad performance in a big film like that.

Oh good God, yes! The first thing a friend and I discussed after leaving the theater back then was that this "thing" should've been excluded from the flick and making it way better.

Yeah, talk about being totally ridiculous instead of menacing.

Jar-Jar Binks gets a lot of hate, but he was the only well written character in Phantom Menace lol.

Ok, keeping in mind that I don't consider any of the characters I'm gonna list to be as bad as Jar-Jar... even though one of them comes dangerously close.

I agree that Radagast was quite unlikable but honestly, Azog was a lot worse. Not just because he wasn't in the book, but also because all of his lines were... wait for it... scum, plus he looked fake. And what was up with the eggbeater replacing his arm, was that supposed to be menacing.

The gargoyles in Hunchback of Notre Dame. Actually, I find a lot of the Disney sidekicks awfully annoying. I just hate fun I guess. :cmad:

Short Round and Willie in Temple of Doom. Not that annoying but still annoying.

Didn't like Gimli in Return of the King either. Especially his "Please laugh at me!" faces in the Paths of the Dead sequence.

Richard Pryor in Superman III. He wasn't unfunny but what exactly was his role in that movie?

I don't hate Jar Jar. So this thread doesn't work for me. ;)
