Funny and entertaining Sci-fi fantasy comedy based on the 30's comics from Dino De Laurentiis Productions is one of my all time childhood faves and personal faves of the genres for many years.

Sure the acting is hammy but there's a nifty soundtrack by Queen, great action and good special effects with wonderous set designs. Recommended to anyone who liked "Star Wars", "The Fifth Element", "Heavy Metal", "Barberella", "Spaceballs" and "Galaxy Quest".

i had the biggest crush on the evil chick.
i loved the flick too.

It's a crap movie... but it IS better than the TV series remake.

One of the worst movies ever, but a lot of fun to watch!

Max Von Sydow as Ming the Merciless is brilliant.

Funny, I just posted on this thread when I read this :

It seems like classic pulp heroes are all the rage. We already heard that Buck Rogers was making a comeback, and now Sony is hoping FLASH GORDON will save every one of us.

The studio has Breck Eisner (SAHARA) attached to direct the latest version of famous sci-fi character, who along with friends Dr. Zarkov and Dale Arden battles against the forces of despot Ming the Merciless on the alien world Mongo. Neal Moritz, a mastermind of noisy and brainless entertainment (xXx, FAST AND THE FURIOUS, STEALTH, etc.), is producing the planet-hopping adventure.

FLASH is probably best known from the deliciously cheesy 1980 flick ("All beings shall make merry... under pain of death"), and was seen most recently on the Sci-Fi Channel's somewhat pedestrian series.

I skipped school as a kid to see this. :ninja: (It came from the telly in the morning.)

Love the score by Queen.

One of the best cult classics ever, thanks in part to the funky Queen score.

This was how comic book movies should be.
Screw all your "dark, gritty" realism.
Insane, colorful, exciting, weird, somewhat silly, Rocking...just like the good comic books.
This was the best comic movie ever made.

Er...it's not based on comicbooks at all, it's based on the 1930's serials, comic strips (a different medium) and Star Wars.

Er, no ****.

Notice how I went out of my way to say "COMIC movie" instead of "comic BOOK movie" ?

Pedantic.
Flash Gordon was drawn by Alex Raymond starting in 1934.
It was a comic strip, with little cartoony drawings in panels, and word balloons:

And I knew some pedantic dork would say, "Er...*sn0rt*...Flash Gordon wasn't a comic book. :o"

But Comic Book, Comic Strip...they both share in common, the word "Comic", so I said, "Best Comic Movie".

Jesus, comic geeks should look into becoming lawyers with their mastery of semantics, technicalities, etc..

I said, comic BOOK movies should be like this COMIC movie was.
And that is still my wish.

EDIT: Another reason I didn't say the more accurate "Best Comic STRIP Movie Ever Made", is that that's not saying very much.
  • Buck Rogers
  • Dick Tracy
  • The Phantom
  • Garfield

It was pure cheese but by god was it entertaining. Brian Blessing alone makes this movie Awesome. 'Fly my Hawkmen'

I've been waiting years to find this on DVD, so I finally got the new release (I'd seen it available in the U.K. but I hate ordering stuff)...and I was reminded of how intensely erotically charged it is.
It stirred up so many dirty thoughts in my young mind.
It's very S/M - Pervy.

When Klytus is torturing Aura, and then you learn that Ming is right there and approves...When Ming uses his ring on Dale...as kids we'd Rock out to the album, but we'd always wait until my parents were busy out of earshot to listen to that part because of the suggestive panting and moaning of Dale.

And I love when he's telepathically communicating with Dale while Aura is on his lap, Hahaha.

So good.

Klytus reminded me off Doctor Doom given the CP30 treatment.

Arrh :cmad: I can't find it online, but Alex Ross's favorite movie is Flash Gordon (1980), and in one of the recent Wizard Magazine anniversary issues they showed a painting of Dr. Doom that he did and it's pretty much just Klytus with a green robe instead of a black one. Very cool.

You're right, that was pedantic of me. Childish in fact. Sorry Wilhelm.

It's very cheesy........but a lot of fun! LOL. So bad it's good!

Like Superman 4! Hahaha.

Oh my God...I love you now more than ever. The internet admission of wrong and apology is so rare and beautiful a thing.

So many would just not post in the thread again deeming it "not worth their time", or possibly ignore my point and instead take me to task for going on and on in two threads about such a tiny, slight "offense", even though it was in the spirit of quasi-fun in the face of boredom at work.

Nice.

Anyway, I love the Flash Gordon movie. It's steamy and preposterous.

watch the movie without any expectation other than just having fun.
its a good time if you don't take is seriously

That princess was steamy, hmmm yeh! Do you think this movie was the closet movie to "The Fifth Element" or a live-action "Heavy Metal"?
