Well statistics wise, Americans are much better then Canadians when it comes to history. Most people I know arn't aware of who Billy Bishop is......he was born in my county...his home town is like a half hour away...
That's news to me really. I wasn't aware of any statistics. Maybe I just hang around some dumb people, but they don't know **** about history. Its extremely important that our generation know the struggles past generations went through, so that they themselves never have to repeat it.
So I've seen the TV trailer and the guy who appears to be thier leader or trainer or whatever looks like Christian Bale to me. It isn't him though, is it?

Saw it today it was engaging but average . I haven't read any critic reviews yet, I'll do that sometime this weekend .The story is pretty basic , the characters are from central casting The character devolpment that I have seen as one of the biggest complaints is sparse in the beginning but we learn about the guys throghout the non flight scenes. The romance was not that much of an annoyance to me and didn't take away from the story. The flight sequence are as good as you can expect . No CGI complaints as far as I could see.
There is a scene were the squadron battle a German zepplin that is real awesome.
Overall worth seeing some good dogfights ,with a little history I give it 7 out of 10.
I think this film isn't getting the respect it should be getting. I just got back from seeing it, and I thought it was fantastic. Definitely a lot better than what everyone here (and elsewhere) is saying. I'll check it out again if I get the chance. It's a good old dogfight flick with stunning visuals and a solid story, plus a few nice twists. Go see it if you haven't.
I just got back.
I forgot my box of tissues.
It had some pretty intense moments, but I do get caught up easily. I don't know how many more war themed movies I can watch.
Franco look so super sexy, the man has a smile that makes ya melt.
Martin Henderson(Cassidy)is nothing but hotness.
It was a visual delight for me. t:
Parts where I needed a tissue.
The irony of the demise of the poor soul with the woodpecker on his plane.
When Rawlings was given the medal after evacuating his love intrest and the little ones.
Cassidy wiped out the Zepplin after being takne out by the Black Falcon.
Rawlings was given the note left for him by Cassidy and of cousre reading it.
Rawlings learns he has taken over Cassidy's postion.
Parts that were too intense for me.
Any and all crash scenes.
The dogfights, they of course improved as the movie went along and I loved the last one with the Black Falcon.
Rawlings coming back to rescue Lucienne in the presence of the Germans.
Glad to hear you liked it tzarinna. It's one of the better WWI movies made.
I looked up some stuff on the internet about the Lafayette Escadrille last night (I knew some from years ago, but it never hurts to refresh the old memory)....they changed the names and some of the events of course, but most of that really happened. Two of the biggest surprises I found....the lion was real
....and Skinner's story
was even wilder than they showed.
If you are a Franco fan...check out "Tristan and Isolde" and "The Great Raid".
Trivia: As no studios would back the film, a group of filmmakers and investors including producer Dean Devlin and ace pilot David Ellison, son of Oracle Corp. founder Larry Ellison, spent more than $60 million of their own money to make and market this film.
Lol. The lion was real?!!! I thought the film makers through that in there- but, seriously having a pet Lion? Sweet!!! Wonder how they kept it so tame and not wild.
Just came back from the movie and got to say that I disagree completely with all of the negative reviews. This movie was GREAT! Albiet, there were some cliche scenes, they didn't weigh the movie down. The ending, however, is not what you would expect- or at least- I didn't see it coming:
I thought we were going to see him go to Paris and get the girl.
Loved the final confrontation. Because they really built that plane up as the bad guy so it was great to see it crash.
The romance angle isn't that huge, it's- I would say- less romantic than the Spider-Man movies. So, I don't understand why some were saying that it's like Pearl Harbor in the romantic sense because the romance was there but didn't play a huge role in the film. The romance that it did have however, I really liked because how different it was- in that they had to communicate together differently due to language differences.
The film has a great mix of character and air battles. Sure, there is alot of character moments- but this is what builds up each air fight. One general rule/idea in Hollywood is that you need to feel for these characters in order for the action to come through and be more than just an action sequence and this film definitely suceeded.
I don't see the film winning an academy award, but for what it is - it was a great film and I don't understand the negative reviews that it's getting.
It definitely kept me entertained and wanting to see what happened to these characters as much as I was excited about the action.
I really didn't expect a big box office for it.....because:
1) it's about a war that teenagers have no idea existed.
2) there's no rap music.
3) it's not a cheaply made horror flick with gross out scenes to make teenage girls scream.
4) it has actors in it instead of media hyped fresh faces.
Yeah, the lion surprised me (they actually had 2 of them as pets....the producers must have thought that people would have a hard enough time believing they had one, so they left out the other)...and Skinner actually had a pet monkey that he took up in the plane with him.
A fun movie....cool action, great visuals, good laughs, and tugs at the emotions occasionaly.
