Does anyone know of, or is able to recommend, a good free comic book database to download? I have been collecting on and off for almost 20 years and would like to be able to view my collection on screen, preferably with cover art. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Well, for downloading you have Comic Collector Live, which is fairly extensive and usually only 3 months behind publications. However, if your collection is mostly older and non-mint books, I wouldn't recommend it. They have a 12 step process for grading your books that ends up very time-consuming.

An online alternative that I use now is Comicbookdb.com. It's an open database maintained by its users. You can add issues, upload covers, add characters...the works. You just sign up and start adding books to your collection. They're usually fairly consistent with keeping things updated, however the more obscure books may not be there. But, the best part is, anything that's missing, YOU can add.

Cheers. I don't want to read th coics on screen just have some kind of database so that I can easily keep track of my collection. SOmebody said these things were frowned upon. Does anyone know why?

So who was talking about reading books online? And it's basically the same as DLing music.

I use ComicBookDB. I like it. I switched over to it after Comic Collector Live started charging a subscription fee.

Cool, I was just looking for something like this. Recently started building a collection and found a few good deals in the process. How long have you been collecting?

For a good five years now. Currently have about 6,300 comics with some things that I'm very proud to have like the entire second volume of Daredevil, Aquaman #1, New Mutants #98, every issue of Superman from 500 til cancellation, every issue of Amazing Spider-Man from 500 up all of Marv Wolfman's New Teen Titans (still need to get some New Titans issues and a few of the reprint issues of Tales of the Teen Titans though so I don't consider that collection complete), etc.

Very impressive, 6300 comics is no joke. I'm more so trying to collect Hardcovers and TPBs rather than individual comics. Do you have any recommendations? I'm more of a Marvel guy, btw, but I have read a few Batman graphic novels including Venom and Hush, both of which I found to be pretty well done.

CCL charges now, eh? Good thing I deleted it finally. I mean, it was good for what it was, but I've got waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many books to be sitting there and going through their 12-step grading process for all my issues. I prefer to think I know how to grade them well enough for my purposes (I probably UNDER grade in most cases. Hey, I'm a collector, not a dealer!).

I started out with TPBs, but I pretty much abandoned that format in favor of individual issues.

As for books I'd recommend, for Marvel I'd go with books that have just started or going to start soon. The Mighty Thor and Journey into Mystery are awesome if you're into the Asgardian stuff. The new Captain America book just came out a couple of days ago. Daredevil and the Punisher are coming out soon with REALLY good creative teams.

As for DC, if you're willing to check them out, I'd wait until September to do so. All of their books are restarting and some of them are going to be great, especially Scott Snyder's Batman, Geoff Johns' Aquaman and Green Lantern, J.H. Williams III's Batwoman, and Grant Morrison's Action Comics.
