i always wanted to know how do game shows get the money to give out these wonderful prizes, and especially the big sum Cash Prizes
im thinking advertising but does it cover the show being on the air?

It's advertising. Sponsorships and such.

Game shows are very cheap to produce because they don't require a story to be written nor actors to be paid. It costs less for an episode of a game show, including the prizes they give away, then it does for an episode of a soap opera.

Sponsorships, if the Price is Right gives away a Toyota Prius, they do not pay for the Prius because being featured on the show is advertisement. If the prize is money, it is given in lump sums over time.

Here's something to think about:
FOX has probably spent more money on Kiefer Sutherland's salary alone than they have on Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader.

don't know if they do the same in the us, but the uk version all contestants are made to take a test before they get through, if you score to high they don't select you:hehe:

Now that is freakin hillarious

i know, i just want to confirm its not from somewhere other than advertising

All shows, are based in advertising revenue.

i was wondering if game shows have someone with deep pockets to fund shows like Who wants to be a Millionaire or Deal or No Deal

Yeah... They have their sponsors...

Anyone ever see the competitions from the UK Channel 5 programme, The Gadget Show?

Their prize collections are ridiculously awesome ;_;

They do screenings here too. I'm sure that they don't say that you won't get selected if you score to high, but based on some game show contestants I'm guessing it's the truth.

Have you seen Price is Right lately? With Drew Carey as host. I had it on the plasma in the lounge at work last week and one of the prizes for the final showcase showdown was a trip to not only Tokyo, but a five day stay in Paris at a chateau, complete with spending money, a car, and your own personal chef and valet.

Yeah, apparently Bob Barker had an embargo on many things. Including foreign cars, leather seating and designer clothing and accessories.

Don't forget animal genitals.

I heard once that on some game shows, there's a fairly steep application fee for wannabe contestants. So they can make money that way as well.

That means most of us Americans would be guaranteed spots over there.

There are two ways game shows can afford to give money to contestants. One way is advertisements. Businesses pay the network to air their commercials and the network pays its employees and the contestants. Another way is insurance. I don't know how common it is, but the show "Who Wants to be a Millionare" did not pay the contestants, their Insurance company did. When contestants on "Millionare" started winning more and more money, their Insurance company told them "make the questions harder or we're out!" :)

That certainly explains why the questions on Millionaire went from esoteric trivia to stuff you needed to go to college to study.
