Gays in Games

I always laughed when Cloud had to dress up in drag in FF7, that was awesome.

Which then goes into the whole debate of correct genders. Their are a number of people who are attracted to the same sex, but don't consider themselves gay because they truly feel that they should have been born opposite sex.

And on the whole gays in games topic, while their aren't really many right now, I am sure they will be in the future. Yes they are trying to please a teenage male demographic, but the same could be argued about comic books, and they now sport quite a few homosexuals. Eventually, games will do teh same.

you know... its kinda wierd, cuz that list was compiled by a group of gay gamers... and that list is EXTREMELY stereotypical.. that kinda bothers me... lol

What, queers can't join in on the fun? We like making fun of queens and flamers as much as the next guy.

... well i am a gay guy too.. but didnt think the list helped break stereotypes at all.. plus a character who was born a guy but grew up as a girl i dont think is gay.. thats gender issues.. and they had like 2 or 3 people on that list who fit under that catagory

They didn't include Bridget on the official list.

At the end of one of a few different endings, a character named Johnny mistakes Bridget for a girl and hits on him. Bridget becomes incensed and a fight ensues, calling into question whether he is really “gay” or not.

They said the same for Flea from CT/CC.

The list was made to ape stereotypes, and the site encompasses more than simply gay culture, it has a lot of queer culture stuff on it too which is why they include transgenderds in the list.

As a straight gamer, I can say I would have no problem with gay characters in a game, or playing as a gay character, depending on two things

a) the concept and characters were strong enough to carry it off

(b) it's just not a blatant attempt to be pandering and politically correct for the sake of it....ie just to say ''wow look our character is gay! arent we cutting edge?''.I have a problem with characters where stuff such as colour or sexual preference defines the character, or is pretty much the only reason the character exists (black panther comes to mind).

As long as it is part of the character, and not defining him as a characteristic, and it's merely one part of the character and not everything about them, then I don't see the problem. But shallow characters done just for the sake of it? No thanks.

But most 18-34 gamers immediately assume that any character that's not a white male is being politically correct or attempting to be diverse, regardless of the designers creating it just because they happen to conceive the character that way. A gay man as the main hero would illicit cries of, "they just did that to be p.c.!"

Not really, although I can see your point....for example, in a Blade game, you wouldn't expect Blade to play seccond fiddle to a white or asian guy.... and San Andreas had a Black character, and it didn't feel forced, and was a really well written part and was full of memorable characters who were mainly black. And there are tonnes of female characters done pretty well too (Alex in Half life 2, the women in Marvel Ultimate Alliance). It just all depends on the execution.

If you make a big deal about it as a promotional stunt (ie the developer or press release saying ''OMFG LOOK HOW PROGRESSIVE WE ARE! AREN'T WE GREAT?'') then it's obviously little more than a stunt, but if it feels natural and well done, I don't think many people would object,

Why do you make excuses for every character people call gay?
because i don't stereo type people like you seem to want to:o

There are still gays who are stereotypes. Yes, we know not every gay is a flaming homosexual who wears thongs and make up. But guys who do that are either VERY drunk or gay.

Colonel Volgin's bi (don't read this Gammy)

Bum loves Rakiov, felt up Snake (knew it wasn't Raikov due to noob size), told Snake he had a beautiful body... like... a new born baby...

not nessicarilly though... thats my point.. theres some people who you really think are gay and there not... wich is my point i'm making to you. all signs can point to it, but there not

We get it. But video game characters aren't the same. The ones people think are gay are blatantly gay.

And your blatantly ignorant.. we get that.

most of the "blatantly gay" characters in video games are very japanese/asian influenced games.. they play with androgeny and dont label a characters sexual prefference at all, but give many what in the western world would call "gay acting" the japanese play with this as something comical, the androgeny is what they find funny, not the label of gay or not...

One such character is James from the Pokemon cartoon... hell one episode even in japan (it was band or cut out of the US version) showed James in a womans swimsuit and he had BOOBS.

You not getting the book yet is a joke
