Please. Just because Nicholson was in a Scorcesse picture means that it was a gift from God.
This performance is not up to snuff with his other work like Chinatown, The Shining, One Flew over the Cukoo's(sp?) Nest, A Few Good Men, even What ABout Schmidt, etc. And I don't like Frank Costello being uttered in the same breath as say Jake LaMotta, Jimmy Conway, Travis, Bill the Butcher, etc.
He played an over the top screaming mob boss who was ODing on crack half the time. I really thought in some scenes he was Jack's Joker with a Boston accent. I mean liked a lot of his scenes, but for example beating the **** out of Leo's arm with a shoe is not exactly the toughest work he has had to do as an actor. I felt too many scenes (which he obviously wrote in, as Scorcesse had mentioned) felt contrived and thrown in. Like Jack and his gal pals sniffing coke. It was already told the cuts between it and the dust in the opera was forced.
And yeah sure DeNiro went into a porno theater, I don't mind that at all. But the whole ***** thing was stupid and so far gone from the rest of the movie I went "this is Jack's Joker in an R-rated, Batman."
The real heart of that movie were great performances from Leo DiCaprio and Matt Damon and even Vera. Leo inparticularly sold the movie. You really felt for Billy Costigan and his trauma. But he played the role in nuances and he was endearing, not broad strokes. When Billy died it was tragic and gut-wrenching, especially to a lousy plot device. You really felt bad. When Matt died, you're like "Haha, son of a *****" he had it coming. Whenever you see Whalberg or Martin Sheen on screen you were drawn to their characters and their circumstances and personalities.
Frank Costello was a bit player in INfernal Affairs for a reaosn. He was escalted to a huge role and was entertaining but I was completely apathetic when I watched him die. Mostly because Jack never convinced me of the relationship he had with Matt Damon's character because he was having too much fun eating flies and waving plastic *****s around.
And if you lose respect for me stating the obvious, or simply having a different opinion other than "Jack was coo in the movie," than it is very sad indeed.
