Good GL graphic novels / TPBs to start with?

I recommend reading Green Lantern + Green Lantern Corps like this:
GL: Secret Origins
GL: Rebirth
GLC: Recharge
GL: No Fear
GL: Revenge of the Green Lanterns
GL: Wanted
GL: Tales of the Sinestro Corps War
GL: Sinestro Corps War (Vol. 1+2)
GL: Rage of the Red Lanterns
GLC: Ring Quest
GL: Agent Orange
GLC: Sins of the Star Sapphire
GLC: Emerald Eclipse
Blackest Night
Blackest Night: Green Lantern Corps

Showcase Presents Green Lantern is fantastic stuff. The 60's comics with Gil Kane were very influential, with continuing storylines and soap operatics before even Stan Lee started doing them. The plots are classic 50's style sci-fi, full of bizarre giant monsters from space tearing up cities, gangsters, and weird alternate universes.

This is definetly where I would start anyone reading Green Lantern.

The Geoff Johns stuff is great but there is also a lot of great material before he came along. There is always the classic stuff from when the character was first created. Alan Moore's stories are ALWAYS a good time. Emerald Dawn I and II are great but good luck finding part two in a trade form because it is out of print you might have to just find the individual issues. Emerald Twilight is cool because you see the origin of Hal as Parallax (before the big yellow bug) and you get to see see Kyle Rayner's origin. And if you are a fan of Kyle read the ION stuff when he brings back the corps and the guardians. Also the Green Arrow team up stuff is great.

I started with Rebirth, followed by Secret Origins, then Sinestro Corps War and then all of Blackest Night.

But I have one question if someone can help?

I remember in one of the books I read, a Green Lantern (either Hal or Guy) explain how hard it is to use the ring. What it takes to focus it's power.

Something like: "think of the hardest thing you've ever done and multiply it by 100, while trying to juggle flaming swords and write a math test all at once"

obviously that's not at all what he says, but that's why I'm asking if anyone knows which book it is. I believe it has to do with Blackest Night. I'd like to find that part and reread it but I don't want to read through all my GL books again (not just yet at least - but one day)

Wasn't that in Rebirth? I thought it was Green Arrow when he was trying to use the ring and he said something like, "Hal once told me... Blah blah blah..."

They might've said it again in different words though.

I find that nowadays I have a very hard time reading older comics for one reason and one reason only, the inferior coloring. It's especially grating with many GLs, because often the projections from the ring will look a sickly green or yellow. It just doesn't glow like it should. I mean, GL comics now light up the room when you open them.

I have the same problem with Star Wars comics. Marvel and the earlier Dark Horse stuff. The coloring techniques are just so vastly superior now.

I like that cover of the Showcase Presents omnibus there. Shows what Gil Kane's work could be with up to date color.

Marvel did that with the very first Iron Fist story in an annual of The Immortal Iron First and it was so much better than the original.

I've got volume 1 of the Sinestro Corps War and it's pretty good. I just can't find the second volume anywhere though :waa: But would most recommend picking up Rebirth soon?

Get Rebirth and Secret Origins. Check Amazon for SCW vol 2.

I've been only reading GL comics on and off. But now, after watching the Movie, which was ok, watching First Flight and Emerald Knights, I got into a real Green Lantern mood. So I'm starting with the Rebirth TPB and work my way up from there.
