Might Microsoft be in a little trouble with other solutions being brought to the forefront?

Well Open Office is a clone of Microsoft Office, but free.

It would take a while for anyone to be in a position to compete with Microsoft.

Correct, I have OpenOffice on my PC. But OpenOffice is not a corporate application, its opensource. Whereas Google's is not.

I suspect not. Most free applications don't come with a lot of support and if you run into a bit of trouble, you're usually on your own, which most people are not prepared to deal with.

Also, free applications have come and gone over the years and Office has still survived quite nicely, not to mention that people want to own things, not just use them.

It'll probably prove to be a convenience for short documents that get printed right away, but not large documents or documents that need saving.
