Cuaron's "Gravity" More Epic Than Expected

By Garth Franklin

We always knew Alfonso Cuaron's 3D sci-fi epic "Gravity" starring Robert Downey Jr. was going to be ambitious. How ambitious though might surprise you.
UK visual effects company Framestore, who worked with Cuaron before on the third "Harry Potter" and "Children of Men", calls the project "the next Avatar" in terms of scale. Here's a copy of the note they posted on their site and was discovered by The Playlist:
"The entire film will be made here at Framestore. In effect the film, as Avatar was, is 60% CG feature animation with the balance being hybrid CG and live action elements.
Because it’s set in space, most shots require every element to float in zero-gravity. But then factor in that this a stylish Cuarón flick, directed with his trademark languid feel, and you begin to realise the full scale of our challenge.
Cuarón’s long and fluid style (the opening shot alone is slated to last at least 20 minutes) leaves no cut points to hide behind. In short, this is a hybrid of a fully animated, photo-real feature film with a blockbusting visual effects movie."
Framestore is currently seeking talent to help them realise this vision.

He should hurry up and get this in the can so he can direct The Hobbit >.>.

We have a few updates on Alfonso Cuarón’s 3D sci-fi space thriller Gravity starring Robert Downey Jr.. The film will apparently be 60% CGI, shot using a high balance of hybrid CG and live action elements like Avatar. And fans of Cuaron’s long continuous takes will be excoted to learn that the opening shot will last at least 20 minutes.

When will this movie be in theaters? I want it now! More information after the jump.
The Playlist discovered a listing on UK-based special effects company Framestore (recent projects include: Avatar, Clash of the Titans, they have worked with Alfanso on Children of Men and Harry Potter) providing more information about the project. Here is an excerpt:

- The entire film will be made here at Framestore. In effect the film, as Avatar was, is 60% CG feature animation with the balance being hybrid CG and live action elements.

- Starring Robert Downey Junior, the film is a contemporary survival thriller that follows a woman as she attempts to make her way back to earth after a satellite crash sets off a chain reaction of further crashes. Because it’s set in space, most shots require every element to float in zero-gravity.

- But then factor in that this a stylish Cuarón flick, directed with his trademark languid feel, and you begin to realize the full scale of our challenge. Cuarón’s long and fluid style (the opening shot alone is slated to last at least 20 minutes) leaves no cut points to hide behind. In short, this is a hybrid of a fully animated, photo-real feature film with a blockbusting visual effects movie.

- This is CG feature animation meets real world on a large and beautiful scale.

Deadline also reported earlier today that Downey Jr will “start production on the Alfonso Cuaron-directed 3D space film ‘Gravity,’ leave to shoot ‘Sherlock Holmes 2,’ and then return to finish with Cuaron.” Sherlock 2 is scheduled to hit theaters for Christmas 2011, so we can probably expect to see Cuaron’s film in 2012.
Downey will play the leader of a team posted at a remote space station. “While he and a female colleague are traveling outside the space station, the other team members are decimated by debris from an exploded satellite.” The female lead has yet to be cast.

The project is written by his 28-year-old son, Jonás (The Shock Doctrine). In the original script, the sole surviving human member of the space mission was the female character (originally, to be played by Angelina Jolie), who is desperately trying to return home to Earth. The report at the time was that she was to be the only actor on screen for most of the movie, and that Jolie would also be playing her own daughter. I’m not quite sure what has been changed.

Apparently the project was originally set up at Universal with Jolie attached but the studio put the project in turnaround, and it landed at Warner Bros with Harry Potter series producer David Heyman and Legendary Pictures. Cuarón is best known as the master filmmaker behind Children of Men, and he also helmed the best film in the Harry Potter series: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, as well as the classic Y tu mamá también.

This sounds really awesome, always been a fan of space thrillers.

Reading through I notice the story has changed slightly, plus if RDJ and a woman are left after the Satellite explodes it's a shame Jolie hadn't stuck around to co star.

From Movieweb:http://www.movieweb.com/news/NEErCGENpSveII

We haven't heard much about Alfonso Cuarón's new 3D film Gravity since Robert Downey Jr. signed on to star in the film back in March and now some new details have come forth. The Playlist discovered that the website for the U.K.-based special effects company Framestore is seeking new employees to work on the film, in an ad which revealed that over 60% of the film will be done in CGI and that the opening shot will be over 20 minutes long. Here's the text from their website.

"Framestore is about to embark on one of its greatest challenges yet, Gravity is the next Avatar in terms of ambition. There are many innovative and visually stunning aims for this project.

The entire film will be made here at Framestore. In effect the film, as Avatar was, is 60% CG feature animation with the balance being hybrid CG and live action elements.

Starring Robert Downey Jr., the film is a contemporary survival thriller that follows a woman as she attempts to make her way back to earth after a satellite crash sets off a chain reaction of further crashes. Because it's set in space, most shots require every element to float in zero-gravity.

Fortunately, having worked with Alfonso before on Harry Potter and Children of Men, we know one another extremely well. Now we are looking for the best talent in the world to help us realise this massive and beautiful film. Over the next few weeks we are interviewing and looking at reels of those in-house who want to join in as well as making trips to the US, Canada and Australia.

This is CG feature animation meets real world on a large and beautiful scale."

We'll be sure to keep you posted on any further news on Gravity as soon as we have more information.

Gravity comes to theaters in 2011 and stars Robert Downey Jr.

AWESOME!:wow:

crap, i just posted a new thread on this! why is it i always find the thread i just posted later? :cmad:

anyway this sounds awesome :woot:

Holy crap. My interest has now risen a tremendous amount.

I'm not excited until I see pictures to see if it looks better than Avatar.

Yea guys there is already a thread for this just called gravity so you can post in that one & a mod will probably take this down.

This sounds fan-freakin-tastic!

Already i'm more excited about this than I ever was about Avatar.

alfonso cuaron? YAY! 60% CGI? Boooooo.
Oh please. How else is he supposed to make an epic sci-fi thriller? CGI is definately practical for this and will only become more practical as movies become more and more abitious.

I hope the next Avatar doesn't mean 2 dimentional characters. But since this is Cuaron, I highly doubt that.

Can a film finally have the visual prowess of Avatar, and a cerebral story too?

Alfonso+RDJ+Sci-Fi. I'm there. The SFX I could care less if they were actually "better" than Avatar. Knowing Alfonso we will get a great story. Hopefully.

We'll it depends on if motion capture is used or not because that's what was really incredible about Avatar. I don't think there will be much mo-cap unless there are alien beings in the film.

^ that is some crazy lagg

This movie sounds great knowing its the guy who directe Children of Men

uh, by using CGI responsibly.

CGI is definately practical for this and will only become more practical as movies become more and more abitious.

its sad that film makers today have come to lack so much creativity that they feel they need to lazily reliant on CGI.

This is a scifi film...is it that shocking that it will have a lot of cgi? and how is that a bad thing?

I swear people that complain about this must've been born in the 60s or something. Its 2010...cg is a very practical and useful tool for films that are epic in scope. Why so much aversion towards it?

^Exactly my point. There is literally no other realistic way to do this movie.

Yeah, but too much CGI takes away from the story and characters. In Avatar for example, James Cameron put an ass-load into this new motion capture technology, and to create this fantastic looking world. Okay, but what did we get? A bland, flat, and stupid film that looked "cool". How a film looks should never, ever decide if it's good or not. It's always been about story, and it always will be.

I'm not saying this is what's going to happen with this film, but if it's 60% CGI, it could very easily fall into this trap.

Even though Avatar didn't have a fantastic story, I absolutely loved it.

Plus, the director doesn't make the visual effects, he leaves it up to a vfx company so there is no reason why CGI would ruin a film. If anything it should lend more realism to the film.

There is nothing wrong with CGI. CGI is a great tool when you're trying to do something that is impossible to film. When you can do something old-school, its much better to it that way. Because most of the times CGI looks like CGI. Space movies can be made with very little CGI, just look at 2001 as an example. It was necassary for Avatar because of all the blue people and the monsters and creatures etc. Im not sure exactly what the CGI herer will go but hopefully for something necassary.

I wonder who will now play the lead role. Im almost expecting Marion Cotillard to be cast.
