Gun Violence In U.S. Movies On The Rise; PG-13 Levels Exceed R-Rated Films

It's interesting but hardly conclusive of anything, although that won't stop people from declaring it as concrete proof that PG-13 movies are turning people into casually violent gun fanatics.

The rating system has been in need of review for quite some time. Another vestige: in all honesty, the Austin Powers films should have been rated R, instead of PG-13. I enjoyed them, make no mistake; but, watching them again as a critic, it irritated me that they ended up with a PG-13 rating when there are tamer films that were slapped with an R.

Oh yeah, the ratings system is completely a joke. You can say **** twice and it will get an R rating, you can kill twenty people with guns and it's PG-13 as long as it doesn't have excessive blood.

Yeah..when that Asian girl got shot in the head in Pirates of the Carribean 3, I was like 'Really'? That was when I knew something is up with the ratings board.

I will say that our society has become too desensitized, but I still put the blame on irresponsible parents not paying attention to what their kids do or watch.

I got tired of this blame music, movies and video games thing quite some time ago. Only time I agree with those finger pointers is when it comes to really young kids, kids who are in kindergarten and a few years older. Major violence is something they shouldn't be exposed to at that age, but when it comes to teens, even young teens(we're talking about PG13 movies of course)it comes down to the parents and how they raised them.

Also, if they want to start watering down PG13 action films now, well, say goodbye to a lot of them in the future considering more and more studios are shying away from R rated material due to not being able to make more money when the younger generation can't see those films.

I've always felt the Resident Evil films would've been fine at PG-13. The kicker for cinema is that the parents who won't let their kids see some of these films will let them play Call of Duty. I'm not blaming games, rather, I'm pointing and laughing.

@Octoberist: Don't forget the mass hangings before the girl was shot.

What i always find strange is the dichotomy between sex and gun violence. It's an unbearable puritanism .

Sex is icky, violence is cool.

I remember Kevin smith ranting about the hoops he had to jump through to get zack and Miri make a porno an r rating rather then an nc-17, while torture porn movies like hostel have no problem getting an r rating.

Well, you can blame all the ultra conservatives that find the naked human body to be offensive, especially nipples!!! We can show just about every inch of a woman's breast but as soon as they show a tiny bit of nipple people start shielding their eyes. Bunch of prudes if you ask me.

Reminds me of Vanhelsing.

The Vamp brides turn naked and fly but have no nips or vajajay.

I figured whats the point, go all out or don't bother

Yeah at least kids aren't hearing the F word in those movies. We wouldn't want to desensitize them to that sort of thing.

They hear worse in school. Parents already know this but won't admit it.

****, I was dropping F's before hitting middle school. :o

The F-word is apparently a bigger problem than straight-up bloody murder, too. :o
I alluded to that earlier. I forget which movie it is but the director is having a fight with the MPAA over it's use twice in a movie giving it an R and in neither case is it possible to edit it out (which it shouldn't be to gain a PG-13 rating to begin with).

My biggest complaint is how action scenes look. In PG-13, they tend to be so choppy and shaky that they look like a series of still shots flipped fast (Transporter, Taken, Bourne movies). The R version of Daredevil looks far better as does the unrated version of Taken.

The Matrix is rated R with hardly any blood or swearing. It got this rating probably because of the amount of violence shown. It seems good fight choreography equals a harder rating. And it paid off. Same with Jackie Chan movies

I still can't believe Expendables 2 was originally PG-13...

Taken 2 but Taken 1? Um no. That action in that was incredibly well shot

****, I was dropping F's before hitting middle school. :o

Well see your vulgar word was blocked here, but showing violent imagery is ok. But scary gifs make it in the gif thread around Halloween is ok. But the children!!

Always think of the children (who have probably seen, said and in some cases, done worse than what's in an R-rated movie).

No, it's not that OK. We delete overly graphic images when they're caught or brought to our attention. And we've deleted some pretty ugly images.
