Hiker says he was pinned for days; cell log says no

Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the rescue of a Woods Cross man who was found pinned between a rock and a tree in Big Cottonwood Canyon on Monday.
Steven Marsden, 50, told police that sometime within the past three or so days, he had parked his truck and hiked about 100 yards up the Whipple Fork trail to do some reading. On his way down, he slid on loose rocks, which tumbled down the steep hill with him, pinning his leg against a tree, said Salt Lake County sheriff's Sgt. Paul Jaroscak.
At about the same time that a passer-by heard Marsden's cries for help Monday around 4 p.m., the man's brother called Woods Cross police to report him missing. Family said he may have been gone for as many as five days, Jaroscak said.
Marsden admits to being "a bit fuzzy" about how long he had been pinned. He said he left his cell phone in his truck, which was parked a short distance below him in a large turnout at the base of the trailhead.
Search and rescue crews lifted the rock - which measured about 1-foot wide by 1-foot deep and about 2-feet long - from his leg and carried him to the road, where he was loaded into a medical helicopter and flown to University Hospital for treatment around 6 p.m., said Jaroscak.
Marsden's leg initially appeared to have suffered a "crushing" injury, though not critical, Jaroscak said.
Detectives used Marsden's keys to open his truck, where they found his cell phone. The call log of the phone revealed that Marsden had placed two calls to his home from the phone around 5 a.m. Monday, Jaroscak said, casting doubt on Marsden's claim that he had been pinned by the rock for several days.
Doctors told police that the alleged rock slide caused a "small bruise" to his leg.

What the hell is up with this? This guy committed a crime and then staged his fall. That's my guess
