I was at a grand opening of a brand new electronics store and they had these two Samsung LCD HDTV's stacked on top of one another, both of them playing Transformers 2.

On the top screen it showed the Transformers movie in what looked like 30-60 frames per second (unlike the normal 24 fps) of the theatrical release. The bottom one had the regular 24 frames per second.

I asked one of the clerks, and he had no idea how that was achieved, and the 2nd clerk said it has something to do with the refresh rates: 60 Hz vs 120 Hz.

Is this true? Although the 30-60 fps took away from the movie (made it appear more like a videogame) it still looked great and more natural to the eye.

Anybody know if the clerk was right, or if this is something else?

Yes that is the refresh rate of the tv. I, personally don't care for the 120Hz. Something about it just doesn't look right to me. There's 240Hz out now but I haven't seen any of them on. Also I was browsing the Best Buy website and saw some that said 600Hz. I have no idea about those.

Are these the tvs where the picture has almost a 3d quality to it? I was at my local Best Buy one day and they had transformers playing on a Samsung HDTV and it had this weird effect where it looked real. It's hard to describe, but I watched it for a bit and my eyes got all weird. I don't know if I could get used to watching movies like that.

It looks weird cause you people aren't used to it, If you go to the movie theater and watch a movie they are shot in 24p. Which means everything is running smoothly. Fast moving objects are now scrolling by clearer than before and 120Hz is 24p divided by 5, 5 X 24 = 120.

My LG LCD HDTV is over a year old so I don't know if I can even fiddle with the refresh rate. My Blu-Ray is new and I might be able to change that. How do I make movies run at that refresh rate? Will my TV just instantly recognize it and adjust?

Not all TV's can display at 24p. Check online to see if yours does.

One of the specifications on televisions these days is the hz rating. Standard if I'm not mistaken is 60. 120 and 240 are the new makes.

It makes the images look more life like and is very effective for high speed action:
1. sports in HD
2. movies shot in HD (bluray fast paced movies)

On regular stations or DVD's, images may look funny. On blu ray or HD channels, much of the action flows seemlessly.

If you've the money to spare, the higher refresh rate is the way to go.

If you like sports or have an extensive blu ray collection, the higher refresh rate is the way to go.

One way to elaborate on the appearance. It tends to give movies that soap opera like appearance. "More real."

Mine definitely displays at 24p, but I still don't understand how that correlates with the Hz rating. My HDTV is over a year old so I doubt I have any luck with the higher Hz ratings. There is no mention of the rating in the specs or Manual.

You're right it is something new and most people aren't used to it. But I still don't like it. It makes movies look artificial and as if they were shot on a home movie camera of high quality.

It looks to stop motion. For somethings, like sports I prefer it and very rarely will I see a movie I like watching at 120hz, regardless if it is BluRay. Less than 1/50. But to each their own.

To an earlier post, 600HZ isn't 600HZ, it's 60hz.

I still think the 30-60fps is the future for cinema and TV. Whenever I get a new HDTV with the higher Hz rating, the first thing I will watch is Planet Earth again.

I liked the way TF 2 looked at 60fps, and I can't wait to watch some of my other favorites at this setting.

I have myself a Samsung HDTV, and instead of low/med/high, it has other presets for 120 Hz. I keep mine set on "Clear" for movies and TV shows, and put it to "Smooth" for sports. For that rare moment when I play a video game, I'll set it to custom with everything jacked up.
