Horror Hereditary (2018)

Horror and slasher films.
I'm not getting my hopes up that it's going to be as scary as the trailer is selling it as, but Toni Collette is a solid actress and A24 gave us The Witch and February so I'm on board.

Another batch of raves coming out of SXSW.

I need this movie now.

Had no idea that this was from the same guy that directed The Strange Thing About the Johnsons.

Omg. I had never heard of that movie until I saw Double Toasted talk about it...that's out there to say the least.

Let the wave of hype wash over you.

I don't think I've ever watched a horror film and actually almost shed a tear because I was so terrified. I wanted this to end, In fact I actually hated I went to watch this. Diverging off this film the recent sci-fi horror Annihilation has two scenes that are so utterly terrifying I wanted to walk out from the level of discomfort and terror. Well guess what? Hereditary blows that out of the park. This is horror at its most visceral. I could barely breathe during the final act and my jaw was literally on the floor. The entire cast is amazing and does so well at capturing the intensity of this atmospheric horror powerhouse. Toni Collette is a thunderous onscreen force. The fact that we watched this at midnight didn't help at all even my friends were terrified and we couldn't sleep well. As I was watching I felt like I was being ripped apart and gutted from inside out. I could feel my stomach turning and my eyes widen in complete and utter terror. This film is so nerve wracking and dreadful that I could legitimately feel my levels of anxiety continuously increasing. Hereditary is a look into a nightmarish hell that I'm not even sure should be spoke of or even seen. This is not for horror newbies - this is a horror film that longtime horror fans will adore. Hereditary is the next horror phenomenon and no one is prepared. You were warned.

I've seen a lot of things in my life but nothing more soul crushing and dark as this film. An utter masterpiece of nihilistic family dysfunction.

I was drenched in sweat when the lights went up. The tension was unbelievable. I have a new answer for "what's the scariest movie you've ever seen?"

An absolutely terrifying and completely gripping experience. Toni Collette delivers what might be her best performance here and this film gets under your skin and lingers right until the end. It runs a little long and I'm not sure I loved every direction the plot took but still this is such a mature horror film. Really disturbing film to watch that I feel might honestly get better upon rewatches. #SXSW

I don’t exactly know how to talk about this film. Not because of spoilers, but because I don’t know how to put into words how horrifying this film is. There are shots that I will never forget. Toni Collette and Alex Wolff both give incredible performances that should legitimately be considered during awards season.

I need some time to digest exactly what it was that I just watched, but I can tell you I still haven’t slept and I can see the sunrise on the horizon...

Some films stay with you for weeks, even months, as you lay awake at night replaying scenes over and over again in your head. But the emotional and psychological damage inflicted from this film is permanent.

Hereditary is the greatest genre-bending horror/drama since The Exorcist 45 years ago. I was moved to tears from fear and heart-wrenching drama thanks to award-worthy performances by Toni Collette and Alex Wolff. Alex's performance in particular, with the facial expressions and physical changes he must display, is the best in a horror movie since Linda Blair's Oscar-nominated performance in The Exorcist. A perfect combination of old-fashioned suspense and modern (but top-notch) jump scares, Hereditary is bound to please the indie and popular crowd alike.

It must be noted that Hereditary is only as good as its secrets, and these secrets are more disturbing than you would ever believe. Avoid spoilers at all costs, for all you think the trailers may show of the basic plot, the real source of the plot is so subversive it made me gasp and the entire theater silent in utter shock. The scene where the plot truly reveals itself will go down as one of the most memorable scenes of real-life horror in modern cinema.

You are not prepared. This movie is absolutely ****ing terrifying. Like holy ****. The sound design, the characters, the emotional turmoil for both the characters and the audience. There are so many layers.

Yeah. Heads will roll.

That's promising hype, especially comparing it to the Exorcist. That's a tall order. I always dial back my expectations when someone says something is the scariest thing they've ever seen though. I can't help but be a skeptic on that.

This has an R rating, right?

R-rated, yes.

Also sitting at a 100% (8.9/10) on RottenTomatoes with 23 reviews counted.

Now their marketing team is sending out creepy dolls.

They really did a helluva job on making that kid look as unsettling as humanly possible.

They did...and I saw her as Matilda on Broadway a few years back, she is crazy talented.

Saw the trailer before A Quiet Place this weekend. Looks interesting.

I want to see the new trailer but I also want to know as less as possible going into the movie. Have seen the 1st trailer once.

The kid reminds me a little bit of the 'girl' in Don't Look Now.

Exactly what I thought.

Got my own theories on this, I know the basic 'concept' of it, and can't tell if [BLACKOUT]it's the house they live in is the dominant force ala The Shining or we are supposed to believe the daughter is the malevolent force or the twist is, it's the grandmother living through the mother (Collette's character) [/BLACKOUT]
