Great, I'm not allowed to dislike movies now!
Hostel is a movie that tries to pretend it is smarter than it actually is. Elli Roth "this has alot of to say about society!". Yeah, sure it does. Americans are stupid and rude, Europeans are sex crazy and speak the wrong languages? Is that what Elli Roth is trying to say?? These two guys, they have perfectly consensual sex with women, and they need punished for it?? Exactly what is it Mr. Roth is trying to say? Throwing in the odd comment in a movie about how important family is doesn't make your movie deep or insightful. Tacking on your movie "based on a true story" when you're friend Harry Knowles saw an ad... that's stupid. The movie is not suspensful. I really think it's been so long since a good US horror film has come out that people have actually forgotten what makes a good horror film, therefore when trash like Hostel comes out people are like "it's gory!! GOOD HORROR MOVIE!!". I hate people. Yeah, sure, it's gory. But is it scary? No. It takes a LONG LONG time in this movie for any sort of horror esque moments to occur. A person would be forgiven for thinking they were watching an American Pie wannabe. More **** and ass than some porno movies. This movie throws beautiful women onto the screen to distract you from how lacking in any deph this movie is. Getting your buddy Quentin Tarantino to say he's "presenting" the film doesn't make your film good. Referencing Pulp Fiction doesn't make your film good. Having Takashi Miike do a cameo doesn't make your movie good. I doubt many fans of Hostel have even ever watched a Takashi Miike movie before. This movie is supposed to be a horror. All in all, about 10 or 20 minutes of this movie is a horror. The rest of it is a cross between just plain boring, American Pie esque humor, and **** and ass.
Freddy vs Jason. Now there is a movie that is alot smarter than Hostel!! First guy to die is a womanising pig, the second and third are alchoholics, it has a much better message. Freddy vs Jason doesn't try to be anything that it isn't. Hostel tries to pretend it is something more significant than it actually is.
