How do I check if someone's e-mail address is their e-mail address?

I found an e-mail address of someone I know, but I'm not sure if its her's, nor if the e-mail is active or not. Is there a way to know without using it, because if it's not, it may be someone else?

You could email them and ask?
Or perhaps google the email address and see if it's used anywhere, publicly.
