So I've noticed people pronouncing them in two different ways. There's the one way I've always heard it with the long "e", silent "e". Then there's the two long e's as in "me-me". Which way do you guys pronounce it?

And yet I keep hearing this other pronunciation on the radio, internet, and television. I wonder why people started pronouncing it differently. At least it's not, "GIF v JIF" bad. :)

Like bean. Only with an m. So I guess really more like beam.

I remember the first time I read the word I was pronouncing it "meh-me".

That Gif Vs Jif battle hasn't been settled yet. :funny:

Anyone pronouncing it "Jif" deserves to be slapped in the teeth.

I used to read it me me.
But I have to go with the crazy trend of writing me me and reading meem.

As for GIF/JIF, I read each letter separately.

If the creator wants it pronounced that way, he should've spelled it with a J. :o

Agreed. No one cares about the original pronunciation. The better sounding and more popular "GIF" is the right way to say it at this point

You know, some people write the name Jerry as Gerry, but in Prison Break I heard the 'G' name pronounced 'Gear-ee' and not 'Jerry'.

I guess some of y'all also pronounce words like gigantic and general with hard G sounds, too. How are you going to tell the man who created the acronym that it's wrong? "I don't believe it so f*** it."

:o

GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. The word "Graphics" is pronounced with a hard G which is why any sensible person pronounces GIF with a hard G. Graphics isn't pronounced Jraphics.

As for Meme I pronounce it so it rhymes with Seam and Beam. I've never heard it pronounced any other way.

Because he is wrong about the G, and doesn't seem to know how to pronounce the word Graphics. I wouldn't be surprised to find out he pronounces Interface with a long I.

But the creator pronounces it that way. You didn't create it.

Dawkins coined the word as a way to consider non-genetic units of replication (which could “reproduce,” evolve, go extinct, etc.). IOW, meme is an analogue of gene - and they were intended to rhyme. Likewise, memetics (the study of memes) rhymes with genetics.
