So first things first -- I love the MCU. The Avengers and Iron Man are two of the best superhero films ever, IMO, and while I'm not a huge fan of some others (IM3) none of them are bad and the shared universe is awesome, creating infinite possibilities and always giving you something interesting and exciting to look forward to in this world.

I'll also say this -- I know absolutely nothing about Guardians of the Galaxy other than the bits and pieces I've picked up from perusing its wikipedia page after I read this was going to be made into a movie. I plead total ignorance, so I'm not trying to rile up fanboys by crapping on something I don't understand. I'm looking for an explanation so I can understand.

But...

How is this going to work? When I look at the current MCU movies and characters then look at what Guardians of the Galaxy appears to be (on the surface, at least) I'm extremely skeptical this will work. I mean, one of the characters is a raccoon. How is this possibly not going to look ridiculous when placed into the same universe has Iron Man?

Hoping some more knowledgable fans can sell me (and others who are skeptical) on why this will work and why it's something we should be looking forward to. Because on the surface, I'm concerned.

I wouldn't. You either like action or you don't. If talking trees and racoons are a dealbreaker, I don't know what's going to "make it okay". Go see something else.

1. Clever humor
2. Charming aliens
3. Badass aliens and warriors
4. mindblowing special effects and action clips
5. sex appeal from both females and males
6. Iron Man or Thor cameo
7. Great superbowl commercial that has everyone talking

I would go with something simple:

Do you like Iron Man? The Avengers? Captain America? Thor?

These movies are all different, and all by the same studio. So if you like them. . . put your trust in Marvel. They've already done good with different things, this is just one more different thing they will do good.

I mean, one of the characters is a raccoon. How is this possibly not going to look ridiculous when placed into the same universe has Iron Man?

Iron Man has already fought aliens from outer space (as Cap would put it), giant flying snake-robot-dragons, teamed-up with a giant green rage monster, and fought the god of Thunder.

Rocket Racoon is a genetically engineered hyper intelligent "alien" Racoon. How is that so out of line with the rest?

The Universe is big and is filled with all kinds of aliens, Gods, cosmic entities, etc... Iron Man, and all of the Avengers (with the exception of Thor), have just dipped their toes into this larger cosmic Universe, but the door is open now.

I never heard of Guardians of the Galaxy until last year's announcement at comic con. I also thought "Rocket Racoon" was a questionable character. Then I downloaded some of Marvel's cosmic stuff on my iPad. Then I download more. I read Annilation and Annilation Conquest, and I just finished the first volume of Guardians of the Galaxy. Cant wait to read more!

I think this cosmic stuff is great! And now I find myself wishing they'd really go big with their cosmic properties and develop a whole "cosmic phase". I want to see The Guardians, Nova, Adam Warlock, Quazar, Mar-vel, Ronan the accuser, the Kree-Skrull war, and big -Universe on the edge of imploding- cosmic wars!

And I want to see Rocket Racoon whipping out some huge-ass guns while quipping with an Ent! I think Guardians of the Galaxy could be really, really cool.

If you like scifi then this will be very scifi. Space, aliens, spaceships, alien planets, "all these kind of things".

I would say "you know the avengers? Well like that on space".

It's not wholly honest but if the skeptic doesn't know that much about the guardians, that's the most likely to get them into the cinema.

I'm extremely skeptical this will work. I mean, one of the characters is a raccoon. How is this possibly not going to look ridiculous when placed into the same universe has Iron Man?

Iron Man's universe also includes Thor and the Avengers, which already established a precedent for this kind of absurdity. Buying into Rocket isn't all that dissimilar from buying into a Yoda or a Chewie, which people absolutely went bonkers over.

It's like Star Wars, only funnier.
And check out this cast. Whoa.

Its Farscape meets the Marvel Universe, barring Rigel's been replaced by a Raccoon who makes the entire US Marine Corps look tame by comparison!:yay:

Oh and his best friend is an Ent... oh did I mention they've got Uhura playing the universe's most prolific assassin and the wrestler who played the Bone Eater off of Smallville to play the Marvel Universe version of Doomsday except his intended target is the big purple bad guy introduced at the end of the Avengers movie everybody was talking about last year?

Well the first paragraph says it all, hmm maybe I should mention they've got Amy Pond playing one of the supervillainesses?:whatever:

I've got a tagline for the poster:

The Avengers saved the Earth. These heroes have a bigger problem.
