This movie is very apt titled – as their are many prisoners in it, both literally and figuratively.

It goes back and forth between emotionally powerful and grippingly tense; for the former it has amazing acting, and for the latter it has fantastic cinematography and scene direction.

Jackman does an achingly and terrifyingly powerful performance. The often underrated Gyllenhall is more subdued, but equally human and effective.

The only real weakness is that the movie tries to be too many things. Even though it mostly does each of those things really well.

Negative emotions can be like a maze; easy to lose yourself in – and be held prisoned by. Deep frustration especiallly, can make you do stupid, or even terrible, things.

Finally saw it, holy hell that was intense... sad... wonderful.

Jackman's best performance since The Prestige.

Jake was also amazing.

Little to twisty at some points, didn't kill anything plot-wise but muddled it... sort of forced. I totally saw

the maze connection right away. But, not the Dano character origin.

The cinematography was outstanding, and I also loved how the people always felt real and their surroundings.

Also, I think Dano's character could handle all of that torture because his whole life was induced with some sort of torture. He was kidnapped at like age 6... was drugged... was maybe 'touched' by these creeps... was sheltered... was mentally broken into an almost autistic 10 year old... had a psycho church freak mother... the list is endless. Clearly he didn't think what his mom and what he was doing was wrong. they lead us on with the dog scene, but in the end it just showed that he was that messed up because of his disconnected childhood. He didn't know chocking a dog was wrong, it wasn't like he was just being a typical psycho by messing with it.

Just edited the above post with spoiler tags...since the DVD is out in a week, didn't want to leave any big spoilers out there for anyone just seeing the movie now.

I f'n love this film,Even way better than I expected and definetly agree this is THE or one of the best films in 2013!

I just finished watching this and hot damn this was a good film. This was a solid, exceptionally acted, tense crime film, I loved it. It was one of those movies that I didn't want to end eventhough it was 2 and half hours long. The time just flew by and not a minute was wasted. The best thing about this movie, though? It was simple. It was a very simple story that was executed incredibly well. I feel like most crime films these days try so damn hard to be overly complex and tangental and sophisticated that you need to watch them three times just to fully understand the plot. Prisoners, however, gives us a simple mystery but with complex characters, which is the way these type of movies should be.

I was on the edge of my seat most of the movie, the atmosphere and tone was so tense and Jake and Hugh both turned in some of the best performances of their careers.

I want more crime movies like this please. :)

Not sure what I expected, but I'm disappointed that this film hasn't been considered for any awards that I'm aware of. They should have released it later in the year.

^ Straight up, it is filled with great performances and damn good cinematography. Even the critic's lists seem to be completely ignoring it.

I just watched Prisoners last night and I was truly surprised, this film was simply a fantastic feature. I specifically stayed away from any spoilers or plot points because I wanted to be surprised and I certainly was, I didn't match everything up until the very end of the film (I usually figure things out before then).

I felt Prisoners was an emotionally gripping and tense film with a wonderful atmospheric scence to it and the performances were all top notch, I don't think I could of seen anyone else in that role but Jackman, and Jake Gyllenhall was amazing as well.

I have to say this may be in my top 5 of the year, it will definitely end up in my top 10 for sure still have to see a few more films, but I really loved this movie I can't wait to watch it again.

Yeah I know right? But that's the Oscars for you. It's ******** movies need to be released a certain time for the sake of momentum. This film is just as deserving of recognition as any of those other films, if not more so *coughAmericanHustlecough*.

Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Supporting Actor are all worthy.

Agreed! I normally keep a passive attitude about the Oscars: there are the movies I want to see get nominated and/or win, but then there are the movies that are probably going to get nominated and/or win. Keeping that difference in mind usually saves me disappointment during awards season.

But it is actually is bumming me out that this one has been ignored from everything so far. It deserves better than that.

And I enjoyed American Hustle, but if that's the awards darling this year, then I'm already bored with awards season.
