This movie is very apt titled – as their are many prisoners in it, both literally and figuratively.
It goes back and forth between emotionally powerful and grippingly tense; for the former it has amazing acting, and for the latter it has fantastic cinematography and scene direction.
Jackman does an achingly and terrifyingly powerful performance. The often underrated Gyllenhall is more subdued, but equally human and effective.
The only real weakness is that the movie tries to be too many things. Even though it mostly does each of those things really well.
Negative emotions can be like a maze; easy to lose yourself in – and be held prisoned by. Deep frustration especiallly, can make you do stupid, or even terrible, things.
