Action-Adventure Hunger Games Prequel | Lionsgate

I think for a spin off, this performed well at the boX office. The Hunger Games isn't Star Wars or Marvel kind of brand, so at best, its okay. The numbers are great for a studio like Lionsgate.

This could have performed as badly as the last Harry Potter spin off or the third Divergent film and it didn't.

Oh this thing is going to be made on the cheap but they could have also thought outside the box instead of just following the book because it's there. I think more people would have been inclined to see a prequel about a young Haymitch in his Hunger Games, who was a character that people actually liked unlike President Snow.
Suzanne Collins stole my idea. :o

Can't wait. I hope the upcoming book has inventive game sections like the 2nd one.

The book writer though could have released these spin off books much earlier... like when those movies were being made.

But still, this is good news. It was 4 films for a long time, then 5 last year and soon a series of 6 films.

Not the worst strategy to revisit the world ten years later. Renews interest in the bonafide moneymakers to get those residual checks rolling in and, as long as she makes even baseline acceptable entries and is a generally inoffensive person, won't alienate fans or tarnish the brand.

Given the timing of it all, I wonder if Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes doing better than expected at the box office gave Collins and Lionsgate that extra motivational push for this. I don't really have much interest in anything else from the franchise besides Haymitch's games so as far as I'm concerned this should have been the first spinoff out of the gate.

Do we think Kiefer Sutherland is waiting by the phone to play Snow? Because I could buy him as the midway point between his dad and the Songbirds and Snakes kid.

As likely as Jennifer Lawrence reprising Katniss. :o

After this second spin-off/prequel. Lionsgate could just make Hunger Games movies that heavily emphasizes on the games. After the 50th Hunger Games, they would still have the other 71 games not primarily featured in the movies yet. The games are literally what attracts the public in the first place, instead of the social-commentary.

It could be slasher/gore franchise like The Purge, Saw and Final Destination, if they decided to release more.

Could not be later to the party, but finally watched this and enjoyed it much more than I expected. It definitely feels like watching two movies back to back. Though, it's also a bit more gritty and has more depth than the movies it's leading up to. Pleasantly surprised.

It's at ~$200M world wide. So... on its way to modest profitability. But nowhere near the original movies.
Funding for this movie came almost entirely from overseas. 65% was international pre-sales and another $20M+ in German tax credits. Marketing budget also wasn't huge. So, it was very cheap to make. The catch is that Legendary wouldn't have made a lot of money from the international box office with those deals in place. Less risks, but also less reward. I'm sure they were happy with the end result though, given the new announcement.

A Haymitch prequel was pretty much what fans have been asking for for ages. So that’s good that’s finally happening. Looking forward to it.

Stripping this franchise of what makes it special and turning it into a something like Saw is such a weird suggestion that I honestly don’t even know how to react to it . I don’t know what makes you think people are just in it for the games; the characters have always been the highlight of this franchise alongside the story and yes, the social commentary as well.

Ì said Lionsgate could make it something like Saw or the annual slasher flick, if its an option. The games itself are a draw anyway. And yes the games are the main draw of this franchise, and not really social commentary. Do you think the first film would have been a success if it was Katniss in her district living day to day and there were no hunger games?

I didn't say Hunger Games, should be like exactly, like Saw where the quality declined in several outings. Each new entry should still be good and I don't need to say it since thats a given.

The long history of Hunger games in Panem (75years), opens the idea of what if they feature the other games as well.

The main draw of the franchise is attractive young people having teen romances in hellish conditions.

The Hunger Games themselves, are a social commentary. IT's in the name. So saying, "well it wouldn't be as popular without the Games themselves". Yeah. Which is why you need the social commentary.

he may consider it now out of respect for his father :( RIP Donald

i really hope not. the books were way better at dealing with the psychological aspect of it all, especially while in the games. so much was left out, despite making 4 movies out of 3 books

Finally watched Songbirds and Snakes and Francis Lawrence really is 4 for 4 with these.

Can’t wait for Sunrise on the Reaping casting. So amped for it I might actually preorder the book.

Also deeply amused seeing the internet fancasting 30+ year olds like Drew Starkey or Aegon from HOTD for Haymitch.

Like, y’all… Jennifer Lawrence was 20-21 when they kicked this thing off. Hutcherson would’ve been a few years younger. Rachel Zegler would’ve been 21 when Songbirds and Snakes started production.

They ain’t dropping a thirty-something into the arena.
