Hunter S. Thompson's "The Rum Diary" with Johnny Depp

I cannot wait for this, Depp in another Thompson film, it just gets better and better. Isnt Aaron Eckhart suppose to be in this aswell?

I preferred "Where the buffalo roam" than "Fear and loathing...".

I own that one but still haven't gotten around to watching it yet. Surprising really, when it has Bill Murray in it.

Yeah, I heard that was a rumour. I don't know if there's any truth to it. If he's in it, that makes me even more excited.

Where the Buffalo Roam is seriously underrated. Bill Murray is a fantastic Hunter S Thompson. It's been a while since I've seen it but I always took that as a more real-life true-story kind of deal as opposed to Fear and Loathing. Peter Boyle was fantastic as Lazlo (aka Dr. Gonzo, aka Oscar Acosta). And...yeah, I can't really say enough good things about Murray as Hunter.

That scene in the hospital where he's drinking that bourbon in some contraption made from hospital equipment is great. And the "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" in the cockpit scene is fantastically hilarious!

Damn, I want to go watch this now...and you should too Figs.

I recently saw Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S Thompson, and Depp was reading parts of one of the books Hells Angels i think. Pretty good stuff. Depp has been talking about Rum Diary for a long time now, I hope he can get it going soon.

Excellent documentary , it's a must see for anyone that is a fan.

Doc is excellent, and i loved Fear and Loathing. I know this is entirely different, but I don't think Depp would do this or pursue it for so long if it was bad. Definitely on my most anticipated list.

I cant wait for this one! :woot:

More pics of Depp, PLUS Aaron Eckhart (Sanderson), Richard Jenkins (Lotterman), and Michael Rispoli (Bob Sala).

It seems like Sanderson in the movie will also be a mix of Yeamon, who seems to be absent in the film.

Michael Rispoli cast as BOB SALA?

Director Bruce Robinson has been assembling a pretty notable cast for his movie The Rum Diary, an adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's novel-- Johnny Depp, Aaron Echart, Richard Jenkins and Giovanni Ribisi have all already signed on. But now a newer face will be given a chance to play along. Michael Rispoli, known for a short role on The Sopranos, has signed on to join the cast.

There aren't any other details in the Variety piece, but oddly enough, Awards Daily printed a plot description on March 21 that credited Rispoli as playing the character Bob Sala, the newfound friend of the main character, alcoholic novelist Paul Kemp.

Just watching it yesterday ross. Thought it was good and Bill Murray did about just as good of a job as Depp. I put Depp only slightly ahead of Murray do to their being more drug use in Fear and Loathing and Depp having to act out all the effects and symptons from the drugs.

Murray was still damn good. Honestly, you could close your eyes and think that it was Depp most of the time. They both nailed it in their different films. My gf wakes up in the middle of the night thinking I was watching Fear and Loathing.

Only thing I didn't care for too much was Boyle as Lazlo. I think I prefer Benecio Del Toro in that role better. That might just be because he was crazier, I don't know. Boyle was still good but just not as scary and entertaining as Del Toro was as Dr. Gonzo.

Boyle was certainly something different. I think maybe showing him as an attorney made him seem more...grounded (might not be the right word).

I definitely think that might have been it. Showing him as a lawyer.

He wasn't bad at all imo. I've never read any of Thompson's works so I don't know how much this Lazlo/Dr. Gonzo character differs in each book.

Not to mention in "Where the Buffalo Roam", when Thompson is taking questions from what looks like college students one of them brings up the notion that this 'lawyer character' is just a figment of Thompson's imagination.

The character(s) of Dr Gonzo and Lazlo were based on real-life lawyer Oscar Acosta.

That said, you can definitely imagine both in Where the Buffalo Roam and in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas that Lazlo/Gonzo are figments of Thompson/Duke's imagination. It's an interesting way to view it but it's just not the case.

Too bad part five is missing now, Eggy. :csad:

Son of a bi***! I noticed that too - obviously, because I had to skip it. It was like leaving the last mouthful of bigmac... made me all itch and sh**.

You know what, I've watched "Where the Buffalo Roam" and a bunch of HST interviews lately and I have to say that Bill Murray is the best at playing Hunter and Johnny Depp is the best at playing Duke.

HST and Murray sound identical especially in Hunter's interviews from the 80s. And when I do my HST/Duke impression it's kind of an amalgamation of real Hunter, Murray and Depp.
