So let's have us some Being Human!
What is Being Human? Deciding to turn over a new leaf, a group of friends who also happen to be vampires and werewolves move into a house together, only to find that it is haunted by ghosts of people who have been killed under mysterious circumstances. As they deal with the challenges of being supernatural creatures, their desire to be human bonds them.
I live for good interactions between characters. Iff thaat's good I could forgive almost forgive an otherwise crap how. That said, this show isnt crap. Im three episodes in and Im digging new characters and change in status quo.
EDIT: Season 2 also gets kinda Premium Channel at times with content.
More than halfway through Season 3 tonight. The things that happen! I am really digging what's going on. Though I feel what's going on with Michell is cliche/predictable a bit
What a great but also frustrating show. Surprisingly I think that the "regime change" actually got the show back on track in a way. I feel it went off the rails for a bit. Still, my memories will always be of it at it's best.

Yea, he seems a lot more...alive. I think why I like him though may be that I wish I was him. He's well spoken, intelligent, he's good looking, confident. And I think that's great because doesnt the vampire represent that? What we wish we were? Im sure he's not everyone's cup of tea though. And for some there's probably no such vamp. But I've always looked at bloodsuckers like they're a symbol of that.

I think Mitchell was much more the, gritty, grimy type of vamp, which, to be fair, was what series one was all about. The nitty gritty of what it would mean to be one of the classic horror monsters. I actually liked that a lot. On both BH UK and BH US there was not this "romanticizing" of the Vampire, for me anyway. They laid it out the way I've always seen it: Vampires are essentially serial killer rapists. Period. There's no other way to dress them up. The thing with Hal though was that they got the writing of the character better in the long run than for Mitchell, plus, like I said, the actor was just that much more engaging. He was great at the duality of the character. I am surprised I haven't seen him do some more mainstream work.
Yea, you're right on all that actually. Especially the nature of vamps. Whatever wig and mask you put on Nosferatu, its still a fanged monstrosity, serial killer/rapist if you're doing it right. And I always favored less romanticized versions of vampires.
I'm also sitting here trying not to giggle at Tom's name tag in episode 5, Ass. Man.
EDIT: The show started off real gritty, grimy feel to it. And I'd say by Series 4 that had been all washed out and its not gritty, its not grimy. Pretty sure the show's color pallet has changed to reflect that. There's more warm colors, its brighter.
I finished the first season last night. It has some good things that make it stand out, but it also is doing some things that keep it from being as good as it could be. Some of the good things are the uniqueness of the concept. I like the idea of these three roommates who are not human. The idea of being cursed as a "monster" is really touched upon well here. Being a ghost isn't all that fun when you have no idea about why you're still here, and you are [BLACKOUT]bound to a house for the rest of your existence.[/BLACKOUT] Being a werewolf sucks because you lose control every full moon, and vampires have to kill people just to get their blood consuming fix.
Where the series misses points is largely on the pacing. For a show with only six episodes per season they seem to jump back and forth on things. I felt like they started and stopped a lot on Annie's story arc, and then the resolution to it all felt tacked on after a very weak surprise that [BLACKOUT]her ex is not stunned at all about her haunting him from beyond the grave.[/BLACKOUT] That felt like something just thrown in there to give her something to do instead of really building it up because they had so little time. The big issue between the housemates being accused of [BLACKOUT]pedophilia[/BLACKOUT] also seemed to come and go way too quickly just to make a point.
The vampires in general also frustrate me sometimes. When I think about why they do what they do it makes some sense, but then they don't even seem like that big of a threat with them being in some [BLACKOUT]funeral home getting beat by a few novices lacking any comprehension of their powers.[/BLACKOUT] Plus their plans just seem so evil for the sake of it as opposed to going an easier route. The big evil thing that Mitchell discovers them doing doesn't even have to be evil at all. The vampires could have just
paid some homeless people good bucks to drain them of some of their their blood every few weeks or so, and then tell them that they have the option to be turned into a vampire long-term if they so choose. But regardless they could feed themselves well by getting a couple hundred bucks every other week to let a vampire drain you of a couple of pints of blood. It would be an easy win-win that anyone reasonable would decide to sign up for. Instead they're like, "**** it! We're going to kidnap you and drain your blood all day, son! Sure we just said that we can never wipe out all the humans because we need you, but to hell with that kind of logic when I'm being EVILLLLLLL.
The comedy is something that isn't bad though. British comedy usually sucks big time, but this one gives me a few good laughs every episode. What somewhat hurts it is that the characters really make you hate them right after loving them. George is a perfect example. He will make you love him at times, and then he makes you want to rip out his spinal column with his whimpering ********. Plus this guy will straight look a gift horse in the mouth and shoot it. So you have someone tell you that they can help you with your affliction, but he screams like a ***** and fights it. WHY?! That's like Bruce Banner saying that he would hate to learn to control the Hulk despite worrying about what happens when he loses control. George does enough to redeem himself, but god dammit Toxin just ain't right sometimes.
Then Annie is so lovable at times, but then she really lacks common sense. You're a ghost! [BLACKOUT]Owen[/BLACKOUT] can't hurt you anymore, so slap that fool upside the head with a few pans. Teleport through the ceiling and elbow drop his ***** ass like Macho Man. Kick him in the chest like Stinkmeaner. Anything than just cry like a ***** on the stairs! I feel bad for her because of the circumstances, but she really should think a few seconds about how she could easily own everyone. The end of the season had me thinking why she hadn't done that before.
Mitchell is okay. He usually stays in the middle for me. He's a nice guy overall, and he's an okay planner. He did seem to flip flop hard in one episode that didn't make sense, but I blame that on the short British series structure than anything. His character makes me think that the U.S. version might actually be better because they might flesh him out more.
I'll probably be on to season two, but so far I'm looking forward to seeing where this ends up.
I think season 2 is the best season for me, at least as far as having the original cast.
They do come back and deal with some of the stuff you mention over the life of the show. Annie has some really good moments. George too. [BLACKOUT]thought I think his send off and Nina's were both let downs and felt rushed after the season 3 finale. Really? "You've got a fight on your hands" and then...no real big fight from them?[/BLACKOUT]
Finished the show this morning. I kinda feel like the last season is a take it or leave it season. Like you don't really need it, but at the same time its by no means a waste to watch it.
Also yea, damn all these characters have that moment where you want to scream at them and call them dumbass or idiot or something because you know what's happening or where this is going.
Alex I think was my least favorite character. She was just kinda there. I don't feel like she was all that interesting as a character.
I think I'm done with this show. I had some hopes for it, but season two just isn't doing it for me. I really can't be bothered to give a damn about these people anymore. It seems like their bad traits are standing out more than the things I like about them now. It was nice in season one when there was some hope to look forward to in the end, but now I just end up feeling meh after every episode. Now seems like a good time to stop watching at the end of season two and go back to something else...that something else being Farscape.
i just finished episode 2. George is Toxin! this show is meaty, or at least feels that way. these hour-long eps feel longer to me. not saying that's a good or bad thing. maybe i just mean there isn't too much filler.
i didn't like Tully from the get-go and i still don't. will try to catch episode 3 tomorrow.
well i just finished episode 3. the reveal in annie's plot kinda sucked, but i kinda also kinda thought that was the culprit
i really don't like the girl Mitchell turned into a vamp at all. george might be my favorite now. didnt think that would happen. i plan to finish out the season but if it doesn't get much better than this, i dont know if i'll tune into season 2
I watched the first two episodes and forgot to watch any more. It's more of a character-driven show than a plot-driven one, which I'd normally like, and I knew that about this from the random bits I'd seen before, but unfortunately none of the main characters have clicked for me so there just wasn't much there to keep me coming back. I might finish out the season at some point since I've heard good things, but so far this one's going in the "disappointment" column.
