Somebody who's really fired up, gung-ho & pumped about the Watchmen movie-tell me why. I've never read the GN, never felt an urge to, & I can remember as far back as '92 fans were clamoring for a movie. Without getting defensive or feeling the need to flame me, just tell me what the big deal is that separates Watchmen from all other superhero properties, & why I should care.

Read the graphic novel and find out.

This may sound like a cop-out answer to to your request, Chris but seriously, Watchmen really is one of those very special things you have to discover for yourself...

It's hard to explain. Read some descriptions on 'ol Wikipedia and read the GN. I GUARANTEE you won't be able to put it down.

Suddenly this GN you "never felt the urge to read" will consume you.

I had no urge as well before i read it....to me it sounded stupid with all the hype and what not...but i read it...and i was blown away by the complexity and amazing storytelling...oh and the even more amazing art...you have to read it!

its the superhero story of all superhero stories, in my opinion
You have to read the GN in order to understand it fully, its doesnt go for the traditional superhero archetype, this is very distinctive of any other superhero you ever known
it doesnt try to censor anything or become a standard GN or CB, it crosses the line

At the risk of sounding like I'm discounting all the other responses, yours probably carries the most weight, as you started out in the same boat I'm in. I mean I've seen promo art, & I keep comig across this blue guy, an overweight, obvious Batman knock-off, a dude in a hat & trenchcoat & a blood-smeared happy face pin. None of it seems really compelling. I do remember reading something some years back (tell me if I'm remembering it correctly) where the villain follows the cliche'd formula of telling his plan & then explaining to the hero that he wouldn't have done so if there were any possibility of stopping it, as he had already carried it out. That did seem cool.

Absolutely nothing can really convince you what a great piece of storytelling it is other than your experience reading it. I was the most jaded and illiterate little snot-nosed jerk when I decided to pick it up when I was 13 or so, having read an impressive article about it in Entertainment Weekly, and seeing that Joss Whedon and Kevin Smith liked it as much as they did.

Then I read the first chapter. And things changed. It's not a boring read, nor is it action-packed or explosive or anything that necesarily says that Zack Snyder should direct it. This book will soak you up entirely.

If you like superheroes or comic-books, you'll like it.
If you hate superheroes or comic-books, you'll like it.
If you enjoyed The Dark Knight Returns, you'll like it.
If you are literate, you will like it.
If you like stories that talk about politics, the human condition, power, and the end of the world, you'll like it
If you like Bob Dylan, Indian food, Mars, watches, or Alexander the Great, you'll like it.
If you have a Brain Stem, you'll like it.

It's not a long read, man. Shell out 17 bucks and get a copy. Worst case scenario, you didn't like it and feel like you wasted your free time. If that's the case you can return it. But if you do like it, It's a book that'll stick with you forever. And you'll find the movie all the more enjoyable.

Take the risk man. Find out what the world's been talking about for 23 years. It's worth it.

DKR isn't a compelling argument; I hated that one.
Part of the problem is, I have no real gauge of Moore's work. I didn't grow up with him, I haven't read numerous titles that he's written & I think he's kind of an oddball. I read "Killing Joke", "League", & "V For Vendetta"-in that order-& that's it. Killing Joke I loved. League I thought was ok-no big deal. I thought the movie was horrible. I thought V was good but I honestly liked the movie better. But I guess I can look into this & see what the fuss is about. Either I'll agree with the masses, I'll hate it or I'll fall somewhere in the middle.

Just sent you a link and PM regarding the book, Chris. Hope you enjoy :)

I have decided against reading the book-for now. But I am intrigued. I have decided to see the movie & only afterwards will I read it. So I guess you win.

Funny thing....I went to my local comic store (Gamezilla) and was talking to the guy running the store for a bit. So he brought up Watchmen and I asked him how well it was selling. He said that they were sold out completely of the graphic novels, but before the trailer even came out or anyone had even heard of the Watchmen movie, nobody and I mean nobody would even touch the book. He said all of a sudden this movie comes up and the book is automatically a best seller and hailed all over. IMO the movie is great but I havent read the book so I cant compare. I just hate those poser people who say that their right into comics and stuff when all they did was see a movie and read the book, maybe only one of the two.

Watchmen...what to say about such an amazing book. Well I'll tell you this..the first time I read it, I thought it was pretty good. But it really warrants a second reading, because that was when I fell in love with it...it's so expansive, there's just so much to take in, that you can't very well do it in one reading. If you enjoy the movie, you owe it to yourself to read the book. I read the book first...and I thought the movie rocked hard.

Great story. Great twists, violence, sex and unlike any other comic book.

I broke down & watched the movie-still haven't read the book, though. I really enjoyed the movie, despite a lot of negative feedback that it got.

If you think that was alot of things going on in the movie, the GN has about 20% more material and storylines that was never mentioned in the movie

So I've heard. But you no longer have to convince me. I'll pick it up soon as I can free up the cash.

Be looking forward to your review of the book then. LOVED :atp::heart: both the GN and movie. (Ultimate Cut version) :awesome: :woot: :cwink::up::up:

I think you will definitely enjoy the in depth storytelling. You will like the graphic novel...I think the movie is just a companion piece. Not 100% faithful but close.

Read it. You won't regret it.
It's so much more than just a ''superhero story''. It's just...awesome.
