1. Name? Hopefully full name (first and last name)
Jesse White
18
Male
4. What is your earliest childhood memory of comics, or comic book characters?
I beleive the first time I've been exposed to a comic book character was Batman from Tim Burton's Batman movie
5. When did you start reading comics?
I started reading TPBs about 2 years ago, actual comics about a year ago
6. Did you ever watch the cartoons (Batman TAS, Superman TAS, Spiderman, X-Men)? Describe how it affected you.
I watched them all: Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, X-Men, Batman Beyond, etc. I'm a 90's kid so those cartoons along with Tiny Toons, Pokemon, and Animaniacs were basically my childhood.
7. What was the first comic book related movie you saw? Describe your experience.
Batman, I was really little then so I really can't describe it.
8. How did you deal with your passion for comics as you grew up? Closeted them? Displayed it proudly?
I display it quite proudly.
9. Do you like DC, Marvel, or *Other*? Maybe all three? Two out of three?
I like both DC and Marvel. I haven't gotten outside of those two yet. I really don't intend to at the moment.
10. In reponse to number 9, why do you like all or some of the companies?
Image just gives me the well...image of crappy 90's artists like Rob Liefield and Todd MacFarlane.
I prefer DC over Marvel, but it's stupid to say that one sucks and the other one rules. They both have incredibly bad books and they both have incredibly awesome books.
11. Do your parents like comics? Do you think it made a difference, in regards to them introducing it to you or them disliking it so you rebelled.
They really don't give a damn.
12. Do comics affect your wardrobe in any way? Most people own a couple comic shirst, some wear them all the time, some are closet fans. What about you?
Nope. I do own a Snakes on a Plane shirt though.
13. Favorite hero? Villain? Why?
Hero: Aquaman: Aquaman didn't start out as my favorite. I always just simply liked him. I saw him as a cool character and that's it. Then one day I was talking to a friend of mine who said that he was lame and cheesy. For months I would keep defending Aquaman's awesomeness and he simply moved up as my favorite as a result. Aquaman is one of my favorite books also.
One of my infamous pick-up lines at work is "So...You girls into Aquaman?" I did that to a couple of girls who were just waiting at the bar after an unsuccessful night of speed dating. I joked around with my buddies like that and they dared me to do it and I did. It's a shame they didn't even know who Aquaman was
Villain: Darkseid: Darkseid is just plain badass, that's enough reasoning I beleive.
14. Any comic related rituals?
No, just simply Wednesday's are Whitey's days.
15. How did comics affect your ethics, values, and morals, if it did so at all?
I developed my morals from acutal events and people. Not works of fiction. I read and love comic books because I respect and admire many of the ethics, values, and morals that Batman, Superman, the Flash, Spider-Man, and many others fight for and represent.
16. How has the art and writing affected your own art and writing, if it has at all. Did it inspire you in some way?
I'm not a writer or an artist. I do have some cool ideas for a story though. I want to have a Jeph Loeb-esque style of a story, that delves deep into the thoughts of the character, but I want to go deeper than that, I want the thoughts of the character explain the emotions of the character. Like how does Batman feel when he's fighting a criminal? How does Superman feel flying around and saving the day? How does Spider-Man feel when he's swinging around Manhattan?
17. What comic related activities do you participate in?
I read them, I watch the movies, I post on this forum, that's really it. I've never gone to Comic-Con (though I'd love to someday), and you aren't going to see me dress up as Aquaman in some convention.
18. How does your passion subscribe to cultural norms and how does it challenge them?
Just what do you mean by cultural norms? Everyone's views on what is normal is different.
19. Ever seen a racist comic book aficionado? Just wondering
any experiences? Or does reading comic books lead to less intolerance, due to its diverse cast?
No. And I think that comic books are trying too hard with diversity. Basically every new hero created in DC and Marvel is either a woman or a minority. It's good every once and a while, but it gets old pretty quickly if you ask me. It seems more like a gimmick these days than actual characterization (like the lesbian Batwoman or hispanic Blue Beetle).
20. Are you a rebel, a leader, a follower, a popular person, a unpopular person? Do you have a bunch of acquaintances, or a few best friends?
I'm more of the loner type. I have a few good friends and I prefer to keep it that way. I like to be mostly by myself and somewhat isolated. I do know how to socialize though so I'm not some person living in a cave. It's more of a preferance and a minor social phobia I have than I can't make any friends, everyone hates me/doesn't like me kind of deal.
Also I consider myself to be an odd person. The world would be a boring place without oddities.
