According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures is moving forward with the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, and has hired Jonathan Herman to pen the latest draft of the film's script.

The studio has tapped Herman to handle the script of the film, that will chronicle the iconic rap group's rise to fame. THR also reports that F. Gary Gray is slated to direct the film, which has been in development for years.

In recent years Herman has become a script-writing savior of sorts. He most recently was hired to rewrite the psychological thriller Demonologists for Robert Zemeckis' ImageMovers, wrote an untitled hacker film that Mark Wahlberg is co-producing, and also wrote a draft of Universal's remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds.

Straight Outta Compton will be produced by Ice Cube with his Cube Vision partner Matt Alvarez, with additional production by Dr. Dre's Crucial Films and Eazy-E’s widow, Tomica Woods.

Considered one of the most influential acts in hip hop and the trail-blazers of the gangsta rap genre, N.W.A. became known for their hard-hitting lyrics about life in inner city Los Angeles.

Founded in 1986, the group was assembled by Eazy E, and featured original members Arabian Prince, DJ Yella, Dr. Dre,Eazy-E, and Ice Cube. MC Ren would join the group in 1988. However, in-fighting would lead to the departure of a few members and the disbandment of the group: Arabian Prince left in late 1988, Ice Cube left in December of 1989 over royalty disputes, followed by Dr. Dre in 1991. Eazy-E died in 1995 due to AIDS-related causes.

A release date for the film is still unknown.

I will be seeing this, only to see what they leave out.

I am optimistic about this, what parts do you believe they'll leave out?

Same Terry. I'm interested to see what they leave out.

i can't wait. I will wait in anticipation to see what they leave out.

I just hope they cast the movie right, unlike the TLC movie. Here's who should play whom:

I was never a big fan of NWA, and despise Ice Cube as a human being, but one cannot ignore the immense cultural impact this group had on the music industry. I would be interested in seeing how this project turns out.

:( I thought the TLC movie was pretty well cast, at least the three 3 leads were. Especially who they got to play Left-Eye.

Love NWA. Ice Cube is in my top 5 favorite rappers of all time.

Im looking forward to this, but I hope that they strive to make it a good movie and not a good hip hop movie like I felt they did with Notorious

Some of the behind the scenes stuff that got real controversial, like Eazy supposedly being gay.

theres no real reason for that rumor to be included in the film.

According to Dre and Yella, E had a lot of women, he just never used condoms, that's how he got AIDS.

I remember that rumor and at the time wondering if it was true. But then there's always a rumor someone is (secretly) gay so I have taken less stock in those claims over the years.

Whoever they get for Eazy-E needs to have an annoying voice, at least when he raps. I like NWA for the most part but I could never stand E's voice. It's like nails on a chalkboard whenever I hear him.

I dont know about acting ability and he doesnt look like him at all but I thought that Brandon T Jackson has/could make the voice for Eazy E

Everybody is gay apparently.
I've seen it said that a lot of celebrities and famous historical figures were secretly gay. Sometimes there is evidence, sometimes the evidence turns out to be true but in the wrong context and the alleged gay celebrity/historical figure was in fact not. And every so often the evidence, in context, shows the person was in fact gay.

In this case I don't know. I doubt it was true. At the time he had HIV/AIDS it was still often seen as the disease of the gay man or prostitutes and anyone who had it was either gay or a prostitute.

He had unprotected sex with women and women only!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was only recalling what at the time was considered the way people contracted the disease, not that I said he was gay or that he didn't have sex with women. There are actually a number of posters too young or were not even born yet to recall the uncertainty at the time.

There isn't any proof that Easy E was gay.... At the same time, I wouldn't rule that out either.

Ice Cube's son will play the iconic rapper in Universal Studios film about the group N.W.A., titled "Straight Outta Compton."

Wow -- that's a pretty big coincidence.

Producer Ice Cube and director F. Gary Gray cast O'Shea Jackson Jr. to play a young Cube in the film, according to TheWrap.

Gray ("The Italian Job") is working from a script by Jonathan Herman, which Ice Cube described as a "dramatic story that encompasses hip-hop, dope-dealing, Reaganomics, AIDS, LAPD, rap feuds, FBI, PMRC, the Parental Advisory stickers on the records ... all of it."

That's going to be a pretty long movie.

Ice Cube said in February he wanted his son to play him, telling The Guardian, "I've been trying to get that pushed along."

Cube still auditioned multiple candidates, from rappers to professional actors. Several sources reportedly said the rapper and actor convinced Universal executives that, despite his lack of acting experience, O'Shea Jr. could handle the job.

Eazy-E's son has also lobbied for a role, but TheWrap reported an unknown actor will likely get the part, and that Universal could announce the main cast before week's end.

Ice Cube is producing the movie with Dr. Dre and Easy-E's widow, Tomica Woods-Wright. The trio has casting approval.

Ice Cube was a teenager when N.W.A. was formed in Compton; Dr. Dre and Eazy-E were in their early 20s. The other founding members were DJ Yella and Arabian Prince, the latter of whom left the group in 1988, shortly after MC Ren joined the group.

The group was active from 1986 to 1991 and stirred nationwide controversy for their lyrics. The group was banned from many mainstream radio stations in the U.S.

Ehhhh as I stated earlier in the thread, theyre probably striving to make a hip hop movie rather than a really good biopic. The casting of his son does not inspire much confidence.

I at least hope this is as good as Notorious, which had great performances but was mediocre overrall
