Identify this movie for me...

So, basically I saw a movie when I was... well... I was a young boy... so let's say the movie is at least 15 years old.

In the story the main character's family dies in a car related accident while pulling out of the driveway of their house. The movie then features time travel, and I can't remember if there's any other time periods, but I do remember him travelling to the old west, because he has a shootout thingie with the main villain in that time period.
In the end the dude has a chance to go back to his own time, but a bit earlier, to stop the car accident from ever happening. Now I don't remember if he manages to do so... but I think he does...

Anyone know what movie this is? It's been driving me crazy.

Half of it sounds like back to the future part III haha but i dont think its that. Shoot out in the wild west and stops the crash at the end by not racing.

It sounds like "Timestalkers" starring William Devane and Klaus Kinski. I haven't seen it since the late 80's...but that sounds like the plot.

That just might be it. The descriptions I've read of the movie seem to jog my memory a bit.
